Need help quickly re roxio CD to backup computer

I think my computer is getting ready to crash. I have More gigs of info than would fit on a flash drive and have dial up I am not able to back up to the internet sources.

I am using windows XP system.

I am trying to use Roxio CD creator to back up my hard drive.

I burned the first DVD, I do not understand how I would use this DVD to get the information back onto the computer. I have tried to read the on line in the help secton information but can't find the answers. This won't do me any good if I don't know how to use the DVD to get the files back on the computer.

How would I use the DVD to get the information back onto the computer? Would I load the DVD just like I would if I wanted to access just one file? I clicked on the files on this DVD and the images do not open up. I wanted to be sure they were working properly. I back up images to DVD all the time and if I want to look at the images they open up but this backup DVD the images do not open. Not sure if this makes since to you.

I burned the first DVD the regular way by selecting file fo folders one at a time to burn to the DVD but it took me one hour just to get one DVD way too time consuming and I have 17GB of pictures alone! By the way is there a way I can select many file folders at a time? I tried holding down the shift key but this does not allow me to high light more than one file folder at a time.

Can you help me before I crash.

Sorry I can't help you, but would be interested in the difference in backing up the system instead of just your personal stuff.

Can't help you with the backup, but to highlight more than one item at a time, hold down the control key.

Not2bright you have to decide your comfort level in all this stuff. There are worriers and the 'Damn the torpedoes' crowd in all aspects of life but especially around computers. If you feel more comfortable then download the Win98 Setup floppy and format your C:\ drive before doing a restore. Personally I would have burned a CD of my D:\ drive first - just in case........ Actually I feel all owners of name brand computers should burn the back up partition to a CD in case the hard drive fails otherwise you have no operating system to install once the hard drive is replaced. Deleting things only removes the pointers that the computer uses to find that stuff you delete so that anything else can write over that space on the hard drive. For most users that is probably enough because most of us here would not be able to retrieve your information. Skilled people would and could of course but do you have data that sensitive? Not likely.

Hi Snidely. In fact, other apps open with no problem. It did no come to my mind, that this indicates OS is not rather the cause. Today ,still searching for an answer I found, right- clicking ' Mswkscal.wcd ' that the files is open with Internet Explorer,what astonished me, as the file extension 'wcd' opens with Microsoft Works by default.. accordingly I am trying to change file association with right program. I keep selecting Microsoft Works with no awaited result. It can be change to any program but Microsoft Works. I know,I got obsessive. Must stop it. thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. Jennifer, I would have been here sooner but I had to eat my way through the M&Ms. My new system is 2 months old now and as anyone here who knows me I was dragged into the 21st centtury kicking and screaming. The old system, a HP 400mhz P2 WIN98 OE suited me for what I was doing. It was just the learning curve getting wider and wider. I spent a lot of time researching purveyors and manufacturers. I finally decided on a dual core Vista HP a6040n DVD +/- RW 2 gigs ram with a 17" flat screen monitor for around $1100.00 at Best Buy. I dumped the included trial Norton and installed AVG. The system has everything I need and more. I'm not a gamer either and I have no regrets. I was searching for a double drive system when I was advised that with the current software only one was necessary. No outward saving to the HD they told me. They were right. In actuality if you are copying a disk with Roxio 9 you 1: Insert the original in the drive, 2: Utilize the software, 3: When notified remove the original disk and replace it with a blank disk and 4: Click to finish. Nothing to it. Even I can do it. I am not certain if your version of Word will work on Vista. However, I am now using Open Office (Word compatible) without any concern. PolarPrincess - If you have a USB port, buy an external hard drive that connects to the USB port and copy ALL of your data (pictures and other personal files) to it. Then your data is safe and you can clean up the rest of the system. If not, burn them to CD for safety. THEN: 1 - Empty the Trash 2 - Search for files on the entire system, using this search pattern" *.bak (those are temporary files that can be deleted) 3 - Delete all of those files. 4 - Empty the trash again. 5 - Search for all *.tmp files and delete them 6 - Empty the trash again. 7 - Run the Windows XP "check disk" utility as described here: http://www.updatexp.com/windows-xp-chkdsk.html It may take quite a while ... 8 - Then try running the defragmentation program.

I havent ever used Roxio but from a quick search ... looks like when you initially start the roxio Back-Up & Resore program you select a bullet to either back up, or to restore.

In explorer if say opened by right clicking myComputer and selecting explore,,, if you select a drive or folder on the Left hand plane.. all the folders in the Right hand side should accept a group highlight or allow ctrl+click highlight of a group individually.

I would suggest you go to your nearest pc supply store and purchase a copy of Acronis True Image, it will allow you to make an image of your entire drive which you can back up to an external usb drive or to cd or dvd. It backs up your operating system as well as all your stuff.

The other option is go out and purchase an external usb hard drive large enough to hold all your stuff and plug it into your pc usb port and drag and drop what ever you want to save to that hard drive.

No matter what media you use to put it back on a pcs hard drive you just connect the media whether it be dvd or hard drive and open it find your files or folders and move them back to your pc.

Yes you should be able to view anything you put on the dvd just as you viewed it on the pc, if not then it was either saved in the wrong format or it did not burn properly and is not useable.

For your drive you think is about to go you can also get a program from Steve Gibson called Spinrite that may help you with that. You would need to have someone download it for you probably since you are on dial up and it may take a while, depending on your connection. Here is that link

to select several file folders or all in a group open your explorer, right click start choose explore, click on the tree to select what you want when that opens in the right pane go to the top click edit then select all that will hilight all, you can do the same for your folders.

If you wanted to save your entire my documents folder click on my computer, under files saved on this computer go to the folder that is yours, right click on that folder and choose the option send to, select your dvd drive, or a usb hard drive. IT will then move the entire contents.

Loralee, regardless of the software you will eventually settle on, you will need to use multiple DVD's unless you opt for an external hard drive.

I suggest that you take an afternoon and use a disk burning application (I can't stand Roxio, more on this later) to back up the files and folders of your choosing. If your DVD writer is capable, use double layered DVD-R's as they are 8.5 GB each. Then, get in the habit of backing up new files to dvd on a regular basis.

A real simple solution would be to buy an external USB or Firewire hard drive and copy over your precious files, though I would still make DVD's and put them away. Most, if not all, external drives come with some sort of "back-up" software.

As Ravencajun suggests, Trueimage is pretty good.

I do not recommend anything by Roxio as their software has proven to conflict with hardware drivers and also creates problems when installed with other software. It doesn't play well with other software. I have made many repairs to friends and family computers that Roxio has caused.

There are many other cd/dvd burning software solutions available, I am partial to Nero.

I also suggest Total Commander as a file manager. It far exceeds the capability of Windows Explorer and once you use it, you'll never look back. If you get an external hard drive and use total commander, you'll be done in no time at all.
