Susie, I have searched & can't find any Avast on it. I also went into the folders. I just did a search on this one & there is quite a bit Norton leftover on it still. AVG is on too & was working when I stopped using this one. I hope to have another one Monday if everyone would just get well..I don't drive (never learned) & all my rides are truly sick. Cat, I think I will try the XP tonite. I do know it has a LOT of problems & need to be started over..it is not worth spending $150 to do that. Nite before last I was trying to fill out a form to order something.. it took over 30 minutes to do it.. The cursor kept freezing plus it wouldn't scroll without freezing. Some on here can vouch for all the problems I have had. If I can get it running I can at least check to see if there is anything else I want saved. I tried to keep things saved as I knew this day was coming. Yes I know now the APC is probably why it wouldn't turn on but I don't think that had anything to do with the other problems. The XP took about 20 minutes to reboot.. this 98 is very fast doing it. Thanks, Dar

Raven, the scan with F-Secure came up clean. Thanks, Mikie. I highlighted and deleted all the files that were from partition D. Then I highlighted the 4 files from C (all were dated May 2005)and clicked to restore. A pop up message said they were successfully restored, yet they still show up in the chest as infected files, even after a reboot. That I do not understand. I think I will send them to Alwil to be checked, since I am almost 100% sure they are not infected files. I followed the file path on each one and found them in the proper places, so I guess that means they were restored. Tomorrow I will run another scan with F-Secure, and if these files are, in fact, restored that should indicate if they are infected. I think I've tried to make a mountain from a molehill, but that's just the way I am, a stickler for details.

Are the print jobs being sent to the printer queue? Are you seeing the little printer icon down is the system tray? When you open it up, is there an error on the first job? Maybe stopping and starting the print spooler would help. Open a command prompt (click start-->Run, type in cmd and click OK) type the following two commands and press the enter key after each: net stop spooler net start spooler Have you deleted or uninstalled the printer a couple of times? Trying to figure out why it's showing LPT3 and not LPT1 after a clean reload of Windows. The DOT4_001 port is related to the USB connection and is perfectly normal for an HP all in one (showing both is normal). Another thing I can think of, you might try uninstalling (deleting) the printer from the Printer and Faxes folder, then unplug the usb cable from the computer side. Restart Windows, then plug the USB back in. BTW, the others that are attempting to help you don't necessarily know what you mean when you write "Have re-installed os, anitvirus, drivers, downloads from both manufactures for all" or "Have checked settings and options, many times, will do it again". Maybe you are repeating the same steps over and over missing just one critical piece. Like, for instance, HP printers install better if you wait for the installation to complete before plugging in the USB cable. The installation will tell you to plug it in, but there is a check mark there allowing you to plug it in later. Sometimes scanning issues are power related too, maybe try a different electrical outlet. Hope you get it sorted, Pam

Thanks for the replies. Yes, Raven I want to avoid using the Norton trial and get Avast on the new laptop before I go online. I re-downloaded Avast again, to a flashdrive using my XP machine. I was able to move it onto the Vista hard drive Downloads folder. But as before, it would not install. First window shows the default language - english. Next window - There was an error while completing the setup process. View setup log. I googled the main error line from the setup log, didn't find my exact problem, but found a few posts - all Avast related and also relating to various internet connections. So maybe once I get my wireless router hooked up tomorrow (cross fingers) this will install. I don't understand why that would matter, but what do I know! My XP computer is ATT DSL wired, which I am making wireless since I now have the laptop. That in itself is/will be a real learning experience. And I will definitely check out some of the tutorials. I think I will like Vista, just feeling a little inept at the moment.
