iso: latest edition of merriam-websters scrabble dictionary

A while back I asked a question about Scrabble and a particular word.

That started a good discussion about the game in general.

Now I am looking for the latest EDITION of the Merriam-Webster Scrabble Dictionary, assuming that M-W is the best one.

At Amazon, I have found the latest PUBLISHED one (2008), but can't seem to find out if that is the latest EDITION.

Anybody know?

That appears to be the latest edition. If I were going to order it, I would get it from abebooks.com (that's where I buy almost all of my books).

If I'm at the computer, I just use the Google search box. A dictionary definition is usually one of the first responses. Just FYI, dictionary lookup is one of the many text message services offered by Google. You send a text to GOOGLE and in the body of the message, you write, "define complaisant". Within a few seconds, you get a text with the definition. (Btw, the other Google text service I use all the time is phone lookup. A text saying, "Phone number Rudy's Restaurant, Salem, MA" gets you a retuns message with the business address and a clickable link for the phone number. I have a data package for my phone, but it's much quicker to text Google.

"'er do do" for "she did"That reminds me of "He do do it" in some pidgins, meaning the confirmatory "he does do it" -- apparently "he does" is not emphatic enough. The first time my older son heard that construction, he whispered to me, "Mom, that man said do do." Leave it to a kid. How is the Welsh language doing? I remember the campaigns to preserve it. Are there more speakers now? I can't imagine Americans funding any programs to save our waning dialects. It seems to me most Americans are all trying to sound alike, at least on the surface. There was a big ballyhoo a few years ago about black dialects being taught in school. I understand the economics in the discrimination of certain dialects, though. Probably only the dialects that are considering charming have a chance of being retained. "'ow bist thee" is surely from "how be-est thee," isn't it? Sounds like King James Version to me.Carolyn, that's the first thing that came to my mind.

>The edition copyright is 1972. Mine is the 72 as well. Now and then when I am looking up a word, I find a petal or leaf still stuck in the pages. When I was in college I had a thing about flower pressing and that was the heaviest book I could find. I just forgot where I put them all! Nice little time capsule, finding those. >So it's possible to compare what was going on in each country within just a few pages Oh, I completely forgot - I have the Timetables of History: A horizantal LInkage of People and Events. Fascinating to use when one wants to see what is happening in several places at a certain time. China and Sweden would sound interesting, may need to check that out. And I also was a big fan of hisoritcal minutia - loved the People's Almanacs from the 70s, not just for the trivia, but for the myth breaking essays on history that taught me tons more than I learned in school. I also have The Queens of England by Norah Loft and The Lives of the King and Queens of England, ed by Antonia Fraser. They both are invaluable for their short and distinct summaries that are quickly read when I am in the middle of a book and need to know background fast.

jmc101, rut ro. I'm guilty of using the word "love" as in I LOVE my new "the most beautiful lamp in the world" lamp...and a slew of other inanimate objects. My mother gets on to me all the time for that. I'm 56 again. Aren't a little old to be getting chastised by my momma? (g) Speaking of loving inanimate objects, I seriously feel like punching a person that calls inanimate objects "sexy" "My new Galaxy S7 is one sexy phone". I just don't get it! Burt Reynolds used to be sexy. Harry Connick Jr IS sexy, but phone, car or watch? Ending a sentence in a preposition. A pet peeve of mine as well but sometimes I do it because to say the sentence correctly sounds too "stuffy" (for lack of a better word). But ending a sentence with "at", NEVER! I had a high school HISTORY teacher that would answer any question that ended in "at" with "between the a and the t". Like, "where's a box of new chalk at?" I don't know if he's right but my one of my brothers researched the grammar rule of never ending a sentence with a preposition. I can't quote him exactly he said it was a Frenchman who decided that Americans shouldn't end sentences with a preposition and that it's not really a "rule" of English grammar. Does anyone have more information on this? I hope all my grammar, sentence structuring and punctuation is right. I'm really feeling self conscience now :o

Get the paperback edition. It is cheaper and available at major bookstores like Barnes and Noble

My DD is checking around for me at different book sellers, plus eBay.

What I'm trying to find out is whether or not the one I saw at Amazon is a new edition, or just a reprint of the last edition. The last edition that I could find is 2005. I would think there would be a newer one by now.

Do you have any used book stores in your area. I know where my sister in law lives in So Calif, they have some real nice (and big) ones.

You could call your library and ask them. They can look up bibliographic information in Books In Print to determine which edition is the latest. Books in Print is now available online to subscribers so hopefully they can give you the most up to date information.

Sue - I should have thought of this earlier. My state has a 24/7 Ask A Librarian service online. Honestly you can contact them any time and they'll try to answer your question within 15 minutes. So I emailed them and the latest edition she found in print was 2008.

This was the first time I emailed them at night and since this is an OCLC (Online Computer Library Center) which is a cooperative arrangement with libraries my query was answered by a librarian in Kansas.

You just gotta love librarians - they always try to help. I know - I was one for many years.

Maire, I called our local library and they don't have that capability.

I also called our two local book stores and got the best information from one of them. They told me the 2005 is the last, and meaning, the latest, edition. The 2008 has just added illustrations. So at this point I think I'll accept that as fact.

I've learned something new through all this, and I don't ever want to stop learning.
