One HOT grandmother and an AllStar

I mean HOT, in 94 degree weather at 5:30.

Parke Jr, again, is in regional AllStar playoffs. They won the 5:30 game and went right into another playoff at 7:30. If they win that one, it starts all over on Wed, 5:30, etc., and if they win, it's the same ole Thurs and Friday.

My trusty fan around my neck to HELP cool me, but not much help in that heat. I did not dress for appearance :o)

Don't know how you did that, Glenda, and why couldn't son invite you to join him?

It was 97 here today...I get sick when it's too hot, so I wouldn't have been able to hang like you did, even with a fan.

I don't have the entire answer, but I suspect that the conditions of morning sun and afternoon shade have a lot to do with this, because I've found that to be the optimal location for roses in my hot and dry climate. My Belinda's Dream, which is in full sun, hasn't grown very much this year because of the stress of solar radiation, in spite of being watered every day. Also, it barely bloomed in spite of statements that this rose can really stand the heat and will bloom well in the summer. I had to give up Grandmother's Hat, very reluctantly, because in its full-sun location the blooms barely lasted a few hours. Ingrid

Nik, I hadn't thought of inarching -- an interesting idea, worth a bit of research (citrus are mostly grafted plants here, due to vagaries of soils, so I imagine the process would involve purchasing a young grafted plant...). It was even worse than mulch, especially for this soil, which is a little on the heavy side for citrus, and the tree's position, in the lower area of a sloped garden: there was lawn grass well under the canopy and it was on the same irrigation system as the surrounding lawn. That irrigation system, and lawn, for that matter, were the first things I tore out, in their entirety, when we moved in.

You would be surprised just how much shade Grandmother's Hat can tolerate in hot, intense climates. The fact is, she and MANY other roses will appreciate the shade with the increasingly greater intensity of the direct sun and UV. It isn't "hot" here, yet. Even when it gets "hot", it won't be anywhere near what the old climate is and even here, the more shade I provide, the better the plants grow and flowers last. I don't have GH here as I expected the high humidity due to our proximity to the ocean would give her fits, but her offspring are enjoying not being in many hours of direct sun. I second the comment about how easily she roots, and can even sucker if happy enough. If I knew whether she was free from RMV, I would suggest you try rooting her for root stock because of her ease of rooting; strong, straight, nearly prickle-free canes and her amazing vigor. Propagate a bunch of them and spread them around the garden. A hedge of her is a sight to behold!

Didn't stay for the 7:30 game, but DS emailed and said they lost. End of season for his team.

Proud of GS as he's played and been an AllStar every season for his team.

He looks like he is really serious about baseball.....I am looking forward to seeing him play in the Majors.

It's easy to tell you two have a wonderful relationship, great photo.

I didn't name either one of them Parke, it's a family paternal name, and was decided before my son Parke was born :o(
