Another squirrel rant!

I am more than ticked right now. We're leaving next week and Harry took the car in for a good inside/outside cleaning and a checkup to make sure the car is fit for the trip.

Turns out those blankety-blank squirrels have been feasting on the wiring in the back of the car by the gas tank. They have gnawed on the gas tank vents and may have to remove the tank in order to fix it. That's the $500+ fix. If they have to replace the gas tank, the price goes up to over $700. That could be the reason I kept smelling gas while we're driving.

So don't tell me how cute those squirrels are. This just makes me sick. They've already cost us around $300 for air conditioner wiring and have gnawed the arms really badly on the andirondack chairs on the porch. I've had it with those rodents and if anyone knows of a way to truly get rid of them, please let me know. No guns--our HOA would not look fondly on that.

We set a squirrel trap when they got in our attic. then released them far from our house.

Same here-still do it occasionally. Peanut butter or bird seed work well.

I spoke too soon about the rabbits, lol. Last night, I was in the garden, and spotted a rabbit in the back corner of the garden. But, it didn't look like the typical beige rabbits we saw at the old house. It was white and black, and didn't seem terribly afraid of me. Turns out, it belongs to a neighbor 2 doors down, and had escaped the bunny hutch in the backyard! My next door neighbor (who recognized it) and I managed to shoo it back to the gate and it snuck back under - apparently the same way it had gotten out. (The rabbit's owner wasn't home at the time). Fortunately, while it wandered around most of my garden, it didn't seem to notice my nice young lettuce or other tiny vulnerable plants. Dh did mention that he immediately knew it wasn't wild because it was too plump (he was watching out the window), so maybe that's why it wasn't bothering my veggies. I just hope it doesn't come back!

CTC ~ I have to do that with the Halloween candy around here or my husband will eat it all!! At first I thought the squirrel was leaving me tokens of appreciation.......until I watched him carefully pile the cones in and protect his stash up and down the fence and even in the trees! He literally pounces on the birds and chases them through the trees! He lays along the top of the fence like he's on guard and only does this when I fill the dishes. It is quite a gong show to watch. Especially when the maggies and bluejays come down and start throwing the pinecones everywhere. Lol. :) My neighbour tells me that they fill the birdhouses on her deck with all that I feed them then they go in and harrass the sparrows when they build nests in the spring! Maybe try feeding them and they will leave your plants alone. In other words put some squirrel goodies beside the new plants. :)Just a thought..... Ginny

you can get squirrel proof feeders that are baffled top and bottom which work pretty well. Only time I have had problems is when a squirrel jumps sideways to the feeder but this does not happen often. Personally I agree with the people here that say the weight activated feeders are best. You can see several different types here squirrel proof seed bird feeders. Take in mind how much seed a feeder holds to keep refilling down. Some are smaller and best used as secondary feeders while others don't need to be filled as often. for feeding squirrels I use a ground table and give them less expensive seed, vegetable table scraps. This helps a lot but isn't going to stop them for trying to get into feeders. Ground feeding birds use it a lot though. there are several shown here backyard wildlife squirrel feeders but again, some need to be filled often so I like the tables. Just throw food out there as needed.

I suspect a fleece blanket (from Target, BB&B, Wally World, etc.,) would be a better size and be cheaper than yards o' crap from Joann's. What's the maximum width on fleece fabric, 44 inches? not even wide enough for a full bed. Get past the idea it's cheaper to make than buy. i really don't know how to get rid of them...we have trees everywhere....you don't mention if you have a garage? if you do, i'd. suggest mothballs..not many critters can those...

years ago my DH used to feed them, how quickly we learned they took us over. They even gnawed our deck rails. They are still everywhere but he did manage to thin them out a little. They are little pests!

I don't have a answer for you except to shoot them. Don't know if you feed the birds but if you do stop for now. Hope you don't have nut trees or shrubs that have berries as they love all 3. I would be glad to send you my 2 dogs or the cats as we don't have a squirrel in the yard because of them. Good luck.

A jack Russell Terrier should handle the situation nicely. Unfortunately our neighbour's dog is now 17 and retired and the squirrels are flourishing.

I feel your pain. We have tons of squirrels and tons of chipmunks. Darn things eat my garden and all the birdseed. One time a chipmunk got in the house and I about ended up in the asylum. Disgusting rodents...nothing cute about them!

If you try trapping and relocating the squirrels, you'll need to take them very far away. Otherwise, they'll be back home before you are.

I did try trapping and relocating for awhile and I did take them very far away. Never noticed a dent in the population, though. It was like trying to drain the ocean with a thimble.

You might check to see if decon (for rats) would help. BUT be sure and put it away from kids and pets. Of course if a bunch of dead squirrels show up, that might not be good. There is squirrel poison, but not sure how it works. A farm supply store would be your best place to go.

I am going to have to battle them to now... the girls next door moved out, and took their dogs with them.... which at first, I thought was a blessing. but now, I have squirrels.

ARGH!

I shall try the peanut butter in the trap option.

I HATE squirrels! They are sooo destructive (I've had serious problems with them over the years; now it's them tearing up the pool screening in the house we recently bought.) Anyone who goes to feed them in the parks and thinks they're "cute" is not a homeowner. They are tree rats. And they carry fleas to your dog who has to go outside to do it's business. And your inside/outside cat. I wish we could shoot them in our subdivision.

Squirrels go nuts for sunflower seeds. These should make a good live trap bait.

You may have red squirrels. These chew anything and if they get on a roof, they can chew a hole in it to get inside. It happened to my neighbor.

The gray squirrels chew also, but do not seem as destructive as the reds. The red squirrel is about 1/2 to 2/3 the size of a gray.

I have not had a problem with squirrels chewing wiring in my vehicles. Prime suspects are mice and voles. Squirrels have climbed on top of my vehicle engines and dined on walnuts. They were messy and left their trash.

I don't know how well it works, but I've been told that moth balls will discourage squirrels and deer.
