DH did a baaadddd thing!

On May 17, our long weekend, we were cleaning up in the garden, taking out 3 raised beds, preparing for a new project. Deej was over by the house cleaning up an old shrub that was interfering with the gas meter. Well there was one root/branch that would not pull out so he got out the loppers, and you guessed it............cut the gas line. Now, he hadn't been digging yet, so it was above ground.

Our houseguest is a volunteer fireman, and he had me call 911, then he called in and said he was 'on sight'. So then we had 3, countem, 3 fire engines at our house. They called the gas company, and stayed around with the hoses ready till they arrived. The gas company tech took 45 minutes to get here, was here for 1 hour, replaced a very old pipe, saying they don't even use that kind anymore. The pipe and fitting cost $22. Not bad, eh?

Then yesterday we got the bill from the gas company.............$1330.02! Holy ****! Oh geez! We don't have that kind of money! They are charging us for 6 hours labor, 1 hour to relight (which took the guy 30 seconds), paperwork, the use of their truck and equipment, etc, etc, etc!

They won't even talk about it with us, so I called our homeowners insurance today, and they think they can probably help us out a little bit, maybe $500 worth. Better than nothing, I guess.

The shrub was interfering with the meter & they charge YOU for necessary repairs. How do you know it wasn't causing the meter to read higher usuage? Can they answer that one?
How do they figure 6 hr of labor when the tech was there for ONE hr? I grump about our gas company sometimes - think I'd better be quiet.

When I smelled gas at a rent house maybe 18 yrs ago, they came right out. Due to the age of the floor furnace, it was red-tagged. Landlord (aka TightWad Original) just re-lighted the unit. No charges. Nor was I charged when this same company checked out a gas smell for me at my current home. I had to call 3 different occasions over a period of time before the source was found (small leak); again, no charge. And yes! I had the leak fixed -- that WAS my expense but the gas company didn't charge me for locating the the source of the gas leak.

Maybe you should go all electric?

Just hope that you don't get a bill from the fire department! I have heard that in some places they charge if they are called.

My husband, 2-year old daughter, and I, were sitting behind this guy at a religious meeting, so after the final prayer, I introduced myself and welcomed him. He was with some friends of ours and it turned out that he had just met them the week before. He had been traveling with his wife and small daughter to move to another state, when a drunk driver hit them head on in the desert fog. His truck was totalled. The baby was in a car seat and was fine. His wife suffered many serious injuries and was taken to our local hospital. That's how he came to meet my friend, who had been called when people of our same religion had requested help at the hospital. Well, anyway....he was thin and stressed and trying to figure out what to do. There was no instant connection--no attraction. I invited him to dinner with us, but he declined. As it worked out eventually, the wife was air-lifted to a hospital in the city where her parents lived, where my (DH) was moving. Because of the wreck, the ensuing lawsuit against the drunken woman who had just chalked up her 4th accident while DUI, and both vehicles totalled, DH lost the job transfer to the new state. A few months later, he was back at my meeting. He had to return to fight the legal battle in person, so got a job in my town. His wife, on finding out that she was getting a nice sum as a settlement for her injuries, decided to stay with her parents, keep their daughter, and divorce him. Within another year or so, I found myself divorced about the same time his divorce was finalizing. I moved into a room for rent as a temporary measure while saving to move to California. He was renting another room in the same house. Somehow...some way.....without ANY prior notice of each other in the preceding 2 years, we became friends. A few months later.....we both moved out of the house...and into our own place as husband and wife! One of the things we both thought was funny as we began dating, was finding out that he thought I was nice to show a concern for him but he never gave me another thought. @tishtoshnm: Oh hun, I don't split the wood with a maul, I use a 3-ton, PTO hydraulic woodsplitter! We burn 5 to 6 full cords every year and if I had to use a maul we'd have frozen to death years ago! Remember, the very first thing on my list of DH's jobs was keeping the d*** cars and machines running, and that includes the woodsplitter and its power supply. I probably glossed over it a bit in my post above, but we had some really hard times over chores in our early years, too. I blush to remember quite how grumpy, cranky and just plain, b**chy I was about it. Sometimes (but more often not, I fear) with justification. Like when the above-mentioned woodsplitter was often on the fritz for months on end preventing me from getting the wood done in time for good seasoning. Of course, I could have hired someone to either bring the wood (not split the way I would have wanted it) or to fix the wretched machine (not done the way he would have done it) but instead we squabbled over it, endlessly. Ex: When we married we were both wood-burners. I was horrified to discover that my DH was content to dig wet wood out of the snow and throw it hissing and dripping on to a smoldering fire. I need to have wood stacked up two or three years in advance to feel secure. I needed to have wood separated by species so I could match the BTU-load to the heating demand of the day's weather. Because I have small hands, I needed to have the wood split into relatively small sizes so I could pick up a log in one hand and load it safely. I needed to have dry kindling in the house every morning to re-kindle the fire. I am terrified of chimney fires so I need the chimney swept regularly (multiple times per burning season). I get great psychic comfort from neatly filled woodricks. I also was at home all day in a house heated ONLY with wood, while he was away in an overheated office. (Once he began working at home, the need for dry wood seem to be driven home to him for some reason. Hah!) Finally, it dawned on me, or maybe desperation took over, and I took command of the fuel issues. (Except for maintenance of the machines.) And Peace finally reigned in our household on this topic. But I really did have to get over my own embarrassment that I had taken over this "masculine" task. I used to be quite cagey about revealing who actually did the wood work in my family. What I learned from this was that I could get it all done, alone, and done in the way that made me happy. (Except for fixing the machines, which is still an issue.) And it taught me that I would be able to continue to live here if I was left living here alone. (Except for fixing the machines, of course.) We gradually started to practice a regime of "whoever is bugged the most about something, does it. And for the rest, who cares?" Not elegant, but practical and it certainly makes for a calmer, more generous and loving household. And that, over multiple decades, is pure gold. L. PS: There are different weights of splitting mauls, you should try more than one if you have to do it by hand, as I did before I married Machine-Man. Handle lengths also make a big difference, too.

There's potentially good news about Annie. (That's the name I decided to give her when I took her to the vet last week.) A rescue organization has decided to help out, and will provide her with a space each weekend at their adoption events. The lady in charge feels pretty certain she'll be adopted quickly, because they don't have any kittens....yet. There's a bunch on the way, since kitten season is rapidly approaching, but there's definately hope Annie will find a new, forever home soon. They are also paying for her to be spayed and vaccinated, so I don't have to take her to the grist-mill style clinic that does the ferals. Not that they're a bad place, but they will do as many as 150 cats in one day, which has to be stressful on the cats. It's necessary, but I'm glad she's not going to have to deal with scores of other cats around her. Anyway, I had said I was going to have her done this past Monday, but I put it off because she was having diarrhea. It's a good thing, since now she's going to a privet vet clinic instead. her first adoption event will be next Sunday. Sally

Thank you for your good thoughts. It's a one-story house and she tried hard to protect her head and back (surgery a couple of years ago,) so her shin took the brunt. She's very miserable since surgery, with a low pain threshold and a high drug tolerance. My mom is back in the throes of depression over this and is having no luck with the meds for restless legs; she's leaned on dsis for many years now since they live so close to each other. It is hard to be here but I want to go up when she can really use me and will need lots of help. Again, thanks for letting me vent--it just feels good to whine sometimes! Oh,Lily, what do you do with a man who who still thinks he can do anything??? I cannot believe he would even have considered putting one foot on that ladder. Groan..... I am glad to see he's on the road to recovery though I'm sure it will take time. If his pain is managed, that's half the battle. Does he have pt right now? Is he good with any exercises he's been given? How are you holding up? Being the caregiver can be so overwhelming. I'll be thinking of you.

WOW! that is cheap...during the two yrs i worked as a landscape designer i often heard a story of the crews doing the very same thing, breaking a gas line by pulling out above ground plant materials. the bill to our company was several thousand $$. i made sure we had ALWAYS called No Cuts & they had been out to flag, to cover our butts...w/o those flags and a confirmation # from No Cuts anything you damage on a property (even your own) while landscaping is fully billable to you. state law in FL ~ liz

Fortunately, it's the Volunteer Fire Dept, and our taxes pay for that, and the cut to the line was before the meter, so we didn't get charged for the spewing gas. But Liz, you may be right. Never again will I plant anything near a gas meter! LOL!

They've come out for gas leaks and smells before with no charge, but even the gas guy said that they don't use the black plastic covered copper pipes anymore because they always get mistaken for branches and roots. He was actually very nice, even straightened the meter, which has been crooked since the house was new. He figured the fine would be around $400, but not to quote him! Good thing, cause he was wrong!

Well we have almost the same bill. HUbby went for an uphill bike ride in 90 plus degree weather and came home with chest pains. I called the ambulance. To go 6 miles was $1290. And you thought gas prices were high....
He has Blue Cross/BS insurance and we thought the insurance would cover it - well all they would pay was $490. I asked why the ambulance company would not take the insurance money (we got a check for $490) and they said Amb Co. was not a participating provider. Now if the insurance co thinks the ride should have cost $490 - why was it $800 more? I am scared we have another bill coming since they send a medic unit out too and the basic service for medic is $500. Next time I will stick his a&% in the Explorer like he wanted me too. He was fine but the hospital admitted him for the weekend until his tests came back OK.

Wow,that's too bad.

We were going to do some work on our house in the late 90's and one of the contractors was walking around measuring things and looking around.Then he called me to come outside,and told me we had a gas leak at the meter.I called the emergency # for the gas co and they had someone here in minutes to shut it off.
They then proceeded to fix it which they did by flashlight and spotlights since it got dark.They said the pipes were old(house built in 1952) and had just detereoriated(sp).It didn't cost us not one dime,Thank Goodness,and they were here several hours.

I'm sure they've probably changed their policy by now and would probably charge for those services.

Kathy, we had similar disputes after DH had his heart attack. They claimed we didn't give them enough notice ahead of time. Excuse me? My husband was having a heart attack. We called 9-1-1. Excuse me that we didn't know 24 hours in advance so we could alert them!

Unreal...
I pity the kid who was in there with hubby. His insurance would not cover an ambulance ride unless he was admitted. He scalded his legs when a brush fire got out of control and they did not admit him.

Wow - that doesn't sound good at all! Guess I was lucky. I moved into my house about 5 years ago, and from almost day one, I smelled gas. Each time I called the gas company they came right out. We have had several houses blow completely up because of gas leaks, so I they do not play with that part. BUT, each time someone came out, they never found any leak or anything. The first guy pulled the ole "you're a woman..." trick and left. I ended up having to go out of town for almost a year, but returned home every few weeks. One day before I was on my "home" rotations, my neighbor called to tell me she called the gas company because she smelled gas coming from my house. The gas company came out and said they would come back - but never did. I was so worried once when I was on my way back out of town, I had a friend be sure that my gas line to a lampost was turned off tightly. The gas company won't service the lamps but I really wanted them to check out the lamp. I knew I would be coming home over a long weekend so I called them to tell them that my neighbor smelled gas again. Evidently, they came out again. Before I could get home, my sister called and said that there was a sign on my door that said that I needed to call the gas company to have my service restored. What the heck!!! So, I called - I had taken a very late flight so when I got home, it was about 11:00. I called anyway and they came right out. Turns out, I had a leak at the pipe from the street, and they had to dig up a half of my yard. The day before, a house had blown up because of the very same thing. Something funny, the guy that came out to restore the service just happened to be the first guy that came out and told me I was just smelling charcoal lighter fluid!!

I guess I was pretty blessed because this had been going on for almost 3 years, and the house never blew up!!

OK - long story, but when I read your post, I felt even more blessed. I didn't have to pay for ANYTHING!!

I'm so sorry you have to foot this bill. I would fight it as much as possible. There are utility support departments that may be able to help you pay, if you do have to pay.
