Lily316, my sister did the same thing as your dh :(

My 57-yo sister thinks she can do anything, even after back surgery a couple of years ago. She was up on a ladder over her deck made of Trex, thank goodness, to get leaves off her roof. One step onto the roof and either the ladder went out from under her or she just lost her balance. Most fortunately, she "only" badly broke in several places her tibia. Surgery this morning to screw an exterior rod to her bones, ankle to thigh, then permanent surgery when the swelling goes down in a week or so. Friend who was helping her with the leaves was in the front and heard her scream, so at least she wasn't alone at the time. Maybe now she'll realize she's not super woman after all.

I was just up there for our mom's 90th, and now I think I'll need to get on that darned airplane again--how I hate to fly! Luckily her son is going up in a couple of weeks for a visit. Thanks for listening to me vent.

Lily, I do hope your dh is doing better. I suppose his recuperation will be long-ish--can you give us an update?

Some how I thought only men did stupid things...lol. I'm glad your sister ONLY has a broken leg. I have heard horrid stories about leaf blowing on the roof, and many don't end well at all. Head injuries, paralysis or death. I'm glad your sister will just have to endure crutches for awhile and not be permanently disabled. Husband is functioning. At least with his back fracture, he is mobile but in pain. Apparently there is nothing they can do but let it heal. He's on oxycontin. He sees the lung doctor tomorrow and also gets the staple out of his gash. He still doesn't seemed to have "gotten" it. Was going on a step ladder to put up the icicles lights. Shoot me!!.Hope your sister isn't in too much discomfort.

You can borrow him but make sure you send him back... there's LOTS more pruning to be done and I don't like having to mess with it. LOL He's pretty great when it comes to things like this though... although I didn't want to prune the dogwoods just yet I saw no real harm in getting them out of the way as there was some sort of white fungus growing all over the branches. Once he did cut them all down (I was there supervising and helping to pull out the 10-15 ft long "branches") I noticed just how big the stumps were. There's only two shrubs there but they will more than likely come back a lot stronger next year. I bet they'll start growing in before winter actually.... I'm not worried about bloom time anyways as this variety doesn't have real pretty blooms. I was the one that pruned the dead wood off the Rose of Sharon as when I let him at it he cut off about 12-13 flower buds. They haven't opened yet and I'm sure a lot of the reason this old tree isn't doing the best is because of those dogwoods.... now that they're gone it should do much better. When it comes to our gardening there are quite a few things that both of us like and only a few that he likes and I don't like or vise versa. So, we're pretty compatible at least as far as gardening goes.. ;-) But seeing as I'm the one who really is deciding what plants are selected I let him choose what he likes and then I pick from there. We've been married for just 8 years now but so far things seem pretty good... if I could just get him to prune at the proper times of the year though... that would be nice. :-) ttfn Mystic.

Here is my list - - Additional blocking in the framing stage to accomodate grab bars, towel bars etc. Additional blocking being the slidebar of the shower also makes it sturdier to use as a grab bar. - Kerdi board for waterproofing - Heated wires throughout the floor including the shower area - Tall niches with shelves sized to fit the costco sized bottles - Tile that is not too slippery for the floor. Also used epoxy grout to make future maintenance easier. - frameless shower doors - we did pay a couple hundred dollars extra for the really clear glass - U-groove frameless - One of the bathrooms is curbless to accomodate access issues. Has nice looking grab bars and a folding teak shower seat that is ADA rated to 400lbs. - LED cans (california code) - Elongated Toto skirted toilets with sanigloss to make the cleaning easier - the special lutron switches where the fans stay on an extra 20 mins to clear all the steam. we used them with panasonic fans which are much much quieter than what we had in the past - wall mounted heated towel rods - hooks instead of towel bars.. I just preferred the more streamlined look of hooks - plug outlets inside the vanity to charge things. - wheeled laundry basket with divers to sort laundry has a niche to be tucked in. - separate toilet stall with a door. We did not do comfort height as we are not overly tall people. Elongated toto toilets with an integrated skirt to make cleaning easier and a GFCI outlet to plug in a washlet. - paper towel holder from Moen that doubles as a grab bar in the ADA bathroom. - accomodated for daylight (skylight or a window) in both the bathrooms to help people to wake up in the morning.. I love the daylight. - radio for listening in the morning. We are big public radio fans - wall mounted lighted makeup mirror - mirror defogger to prevent the mirror from getting steamed up.. - vac pan at the floor level that connects to our central vac system to make daily cleanups a breeze. I am picky about hair on the floor - solid core doors to prevent bathroom noises from being heard outside. I often have to get ready before dawn and the shower noise wakes DH up. - recirculating pump for our tankless to avoid warm water delays. Ours is integrated into the tankless. - Hansgrohe ibox to get the thermostatic control to preset the preferred temprature - Ebbe integrated drain that has a hidden hair snare. - Handheld shower with a longer hose to make it easier to clean the walls. - rain shower on a longer arm so that you can stand away from the wall.

Wow - that doesn't sound good at all! Guess I was lucky. I moved into my house about 5 years ago, and from almost day one, I smelled gas. Each time I called the gas company they came right out. We have had several houses blow completely up because of gas leaks, so I they do not play with that part. BUT, each time someone came out, they never found any leak or anything. The first guy pulled the ole "you're a woman..." trick and left. I ended up having to go out of town for almost a year, but returned home every few weeks. One day before I was on my "home" rotations, my neighbor called to tell me she called the gas company because she smelled gas coming from my house. The gas company came out and said they would come back - but never did. I was so worried once when I was on my way back out of town, I had a friend be sure that my gas line to a lampost was turned off tightly. The gas company won't service the lamps but I really wanted them to check out the lamp. I knew I would be coming home over a long weekend so I called them to tell them that my neighbor smelled gas again. Evidently, they came out again. Before I could get home, my sister called and said that there was a sign on my door that said that I needed to call the gas company to have my service restored. What the heck!!! So, I called - I had taken a very late flight so when I got home, it was about 11:00. I called anyway and they came right out. Turns out, I had a leak at the pipe from the street, and they had to dig up a half of my yard. The day before, a house had blown up because of the very same thing. Something funny, the guy that came out to restore the service just happened to be the first guy that came out and told me I was just smelling charcoal lighter fluid!! I guess I was pretty blessed because this had been going on for almost 3 years, and the house never blew up!! OK - long story, but when I read your post, I felt even more blessed. I didn't have to pay for ANYTHING!! I'm so sorry you have to foot this bill. I would fight it as much as possible. There are utility support departments that may be able to help you pay, if you do have to pay. Best Wishes!

It sounds to me like someone checked off the names they wanted in Outlook or a similar contact manager and paid no attention at all to how the names were said or if there would be a question as to whether it meant plus spouses, plus children, etc. Not so much lacking in etiquette as utterly clueless about how to make a guest list in the first place. Anne, good for you for sticking with the notion that these are good friends even when feelings were being hurt. There are a heck of a lot of clueless people in the world and it would be a lonely place if we dumped all of them just for one thoughtless gaff. As to gifts, thinking along the lines of Littlebug's joke, how about a home organizer kit? If they're combining two households, plus wedding gifts, they probably have a lot of stuff, some of it valuable. A home organizer kit, with one of those engraving pens for marking electronics, ledgers (spreadsheets) for insureables, pouches for receipts, a binder for insurance policies, bank documents, trust papers, etc., a file box for instruction manuals, plus things like note paper to write the stories of heirlooms on, colorful stickers, maybe even a garage sale kit, could also help them learn to be organized. :) Or you can get them something as random as the invitation. Go to a china shop or department store with a good return policy for bridal and get the most interesting looking random thing in your price range. Maybe a glass and silver pickle jar or a strange art glass vase.

Guess that is one reason we have a steel roof--nothing sticks, even snow most of the time. Also good against hail damage.

Oh gosh! Your sister is a lucky gal! I hope that she is healed soon, that sounds bad. Is her home all on one level?

Lily, you tell hubby that he has had the power of KT's prayers behind him to help him out, but if he doesn't take it easy he's going to have the KT WOMEN after him pretty soon!

Thank you for your good thoughts. It's a one-story house and she tried hard to protect her head and back (surgery a couple of years ago,) so her shin took the brunt. She's very miserable since surgery, with a low pain threshold and a high drug tolerance. My mom is back in the throes of depression over this and is having no luck with the meds for restless legs; she's leaned on dsis for many years now since they live so close to each other. It is hard to be here but I want to go up when she can really use me and will need lots of help. Again, thanks for letting me vent--it just feels good to whine sometimes!

Oh,Lily, what do you do with a man who who still thinks he can do anything??? I cannot believe he would even have considered putting one foot on that ladder. Groan.....
I am glad to see he's on the road to recovery though I'm sure it will take time. If his pain is managed, that's half the battle. Does he have pt right now? Is he good with any exercises he's been given? How are you holding up? Being the caregiver can be so overwhelming. I'll be thinking of you.

It was smart of your sister to protect her head and back if given a split second to react. I hope she feels better very soon. Husband is functioning. He takes pain meds and will go to his lung doctor tomorrow with Xrays he'll have taken earlier. He was given no exercises, ortho docs said there is nothing we can do. I wasn't there when they were. He tells everyone he has done this a 100 times. Remember in 1996 he fell off a ladder trimming a tree and broke both arms. I've told him he's not 25 anymore. Far from it.
