Facebook profile question

Hi, Most of you seem to know a lot about fb, and I'm wondering if you can help. I joined facebook and belong to a certain 'medical condition' group that is pretty active. I'm just wondering if there is any way to NOT receive emails if/when you get responses. I'm getting quite a lot each time, and don't want to fill up my mail. Thanks!

Go to Home and select the arrow on the right side of the box. Select Account Settings and then go to Notifications. Under General Notifications, you can uncheck activity that sends you an e-mail. Or check the box under Email frequency to limit them entirely. I only get e-mails for birthdays.

I'm sure there are other ways to do this but this is how I did it.

I just recently read an article on that and how it was set default to share which is just ridiculous. I highly recommend this site for anyone using facebook Get Protected I copied this info from one of the other forums I am on "NEW PRIVACY setting called "Instant Personalization" that shares data with non-Facebook websites and it is automatically set to "Enable." Go to Account >Privacy Settings > Applications and Websites >Instant Personalization > Edit Settings, and un-check "Enable". Anything you don't know how to do, just google search for the answers. Just remember when filling out your profile information, don't give out your personal information. I have seen some people say that they don't use their real names, but as far as I know...everyone that I know uses their real names....I don't know a soul that uses some fictitious name. I actually google searched for my name and not a thing came up that was ME on facebook. And if you have your security settings set to where only your friends can see it, then if someone goes to your facebook profile page by searching for your name(within facebook), all they will be able to see is your name and the profile picture you've chosen. On mine, I just use a picture of an animal and not my face...I'm not trying to reconnect with people I've known from the past. Just be careful that your don't accept bogus friends, I used to get that all the time for some reason but I never do anymore.

If you set your FB to not show Friends, then they won't see her. Nor will it show when you friend her. They will however see when you correspond with her if you reply to your new friend's post. But that won't necessarily show that you're friends because your new friend could have her posts wide open for anyone to respond. If you don't want them to see what you post in general, create a group and put them in there and then use the exceptions option on that group.

Nobody can read anything about you that you don't post on Facebook. I do have my phone numbers in my info, but not my address. I have it so only "friends" can see my photos, not friends of friends. And you have to be on my "friends" list to even see my profile. You can't even view my friends list without being on my "friends" list. The gifts and snowball fights are all just for fun. If you don't like all the applications, you can block them. You do have that option. Also, if there is someone on Facebook you don't want to find you, rather than avoid using your name, simply 'block' that person. That way they don't see anything about you, not even that you have an account. I've been on Facebook for a year and a half and really like it. I play Scarab Solitaire almost every day. Also love Scrabble but preferred it before Parker Brothers forced Scrabulous to shut down. Their version was actually better. Facebook is as safe as you set your profile and applications to. That's completely up to you. If my best friend from childhood hadn't put her last name on Facebook, I'd have never found her. I just wish more married women used their maiden names on Facebook too, which is why my last name is hyphenated. I've only found one school friend. You don't have to post your employment, your address, your phone numbers. And if you do post your phone number, you can make it private. Just go into the privacy settings. I hated MySpace, but love Facebook.

I know FB has the option to receive or not receive notifications, but are the emails you are getting possibly from individuals, not FB?

I can't figure out the settings you mention, Dees, under the General Notifications - there isn't anything there that applies to what I want to do - ie. stop the emails... eek.

Sue, it looks like the emails are from the individuals, but it's just a copy of what they've already said on the FB topic that I either start, or when I post on someone else's topic.

When you get to the General Notifications page...scroll down to the All Notifications setting and click on Facebook..it will open and look like this
Facebook Email
Sends you a message
Adds you as a friend
Confirms a friend request
Posts on your Wall
Pokes you
Has a birthday coming up (weekly message)
Suggests a friend you might know
Adds a friend you suggested
Joins Facebook after your invite
Tags you on their profile
Tags you in a post
Mentions you in a comment
Comments on a post you were tagged in
Subscribes to your public updates
Posts content (Close Friends list only)
Says you are with them in a post
Likes a post you're tagged in
Likes your post
You can change your options there...hit save changes and move to the next one...

Thanks. That's where I went last night, and couldn't really figure out which one to pick. 'Facebook sends you a message' wasn't even checked to begin with, so I'm not sure why I'm receiving emails.

OK, I think I figured it out. I've been clicking on the envelope icon and changing things under each category. Thx.
