Clarify my Facebook question

I want to say I'm so sorry that I offended you all by saying facebook was childish. I was basing my opinion on the link to ONE facebook page, and her use of it was childish. Not all of you.

The reason I asked, I wondered how you all use it because I had just started mine, had not found more than 2 friends, and saw no photos on their pages. I have spend too much time trying to understand the "privacy" settings, apparently don't understand them, and need to learn more. I was also concerned about using my name on the internet. I posted a comment regarding a news story, and lo and behold, it posted my name. I did not like that. It should have been my choice to add my name to a comment, not the webpage.

Obviously I need to take more time(again) to try to learn the privacy settings, and wait to make a judgement on facebook usage until Ihave viewed more than a few pages. One of the posts detailed how she sees a bunch of activities of a family member, that makes more sense to me. Thanks for all your input. Sorry for not making my reason for my childish comment more clear. It was based on one person.

Thanks, Carol. That's good of you. I wish I could help you sort out the privacy settings, but I barely understand them myself. However, others at the KT are more knowledgeable, and perhaps they'll see this and jump in.

Yes, thank you. I appreciate it.

You know, there must be thousands of websites we don't even know about. If you don't like fb, don't even bother with it unless the people you know irl encourage you to go there and can help you set it up to your satisfaction. You can do that on the phone in a few minutes with someone who knows the ropes. Otherwise, why bother?

It sounds like you have a Skippy-type non-pressurized filter. This dictates that the UV clarifier must be placed in-line at a point between the pond's pump and the pond-water's arrival at the filter. (With pressurized systems, the ideal placement is after water departs the filter and before it re-enters the pond. You don't have that option and neither do I.) Choose a location between the pump and filter that is close enough to access a GFI-protected electrical source. Cut the existing tubing and force the ends over the UV unit's two hose-bibs. (These hose-bibs must typically be cut to match your filter-system's tubing size.) My particular UV filter can be hooked up in either direction; it doesn't matter what end the water enters or exits. Attach and tighten the hose clamps. Turn on the pump and check for leaks in your connections. If all looks OK, hook up your electricity and you are set. It's an easy job.

Thanks digger, Imagine my surprise when this whole thread started up after 2 years!! LOL it's always helpful, no matter how timely, to get good info from fellow ponders. The pond looks great, and I am guessing (fingers crossed) that it will stay this way the rest of the year. We kept our fish food in a gumball machine by the pond so it would be convenient for guests to throw in a little food when they are over...........a raccoon (I guess) found our little treasure last week, and ripped the hinged lid off the top of the wooden roof we had over the machine. Then it ripped the metal lid off of the gumball machine and cracked all the plastic so it could eat all of our food :( I should probably just be happy that whatever it was, it was that close to our fish and just ate the food instead! I'm glad it didn't notice the beautiful smorgasbord sitting right behind him!!! Thanks to everyone for their input. Hoping all of your ponds wind up crystal clear like ours is right now. With the heat that we have had here, I'm just taking it one day at a time! Judy

Thanks Crenda, I missed that they'd be outdoors, I'm sorry. Good catch. Esp in humid FLA. My Dad lived in Ft. Lauderdale area for his last 10 yrs. or so, so I know what you mean. I visited sometimes & he often commented on the weather & the humidity. Interesting to actually see that mix, that even 50/50% wasn't enough, humph! Hi TreeHugger, Good for you for wanting to do right by your plants in their mixes. Let's start you off right by suggesting don't use containers w/out drainage holes, that's never a good idea & puts one's plants at disadvantage. Perlite is used by many folk instead of pumice which seems difficult to get in the North Atlantic, our part of the woods. I've had a friend who kept me in pumice for a few yrs, but I also use perlite for the same purpose. Sandy soil sounds like a bad idea, I'd let that plant bloom first & then change it to the suggested mix. Sounds like you're off to a good start!

Capital Culinarian Owners - Please clarify hood height question

I can answer your question from experience as we have the exact same Culinarian cooktop configuration and opted for the 54x27 wooden hood with an insert from ModernAire. Our counters are 37-1/4 inches high, in part because we're tall but also because this pushes the cooktop an inch closer to the bottom of the hood, given a fixed hood height. Here are our finished measurements: 69-3/4 inches from floor to bottom of hood 32-1/2 inches from countertop to bottom of hood 31-3/4 inches from top of Culinarian stainless to bottom of hood (and the top of the iron grates are about 1 inch higher than the stainless, making the hood 30-3/4 above the top of the iron grates) We planned to mount the hood higher but dropped it down when we realized it is not a danger. One drawback of mounting the hood to high (in addition to poorer performance) is that you see the undersides more easily and some complain about the hood lights shining in their eyes or in the eyes of people sitting at the island. Plus the perceived noise is higher if there's a straight shot from your ears to the underside of the hood. We have never bumped into the hood and it would be almost impossible to do so because the rounded front of the Culinarian sticks out past the front edge of the countertop, making the cooks stand further out from the back wall. The wood hood itself is 54W x 27D, so the opening is less (perhaps I should have made the opening this dimension). Just now I discovered the hood sticks out only 26-1/2 inches from the back wall. This is due to the backsplash installed after the cabinets, as usual. A 24 inch deep hood would be a disaster with this cooking machine. I wish we had gone 27 inches deep on the inside of the hood, making the outside of the hood about 27-3/4 inches deep before backsplash. But I suggest you get rid of the shelf on the front of the hood unless you place it up higher. Even then it will block light from ceiling. If you have a deeper cabinet made for the Culianrian (not sure if you're getting a cooktop or a range) make sure your cabinetmaker doesn't make the cabinet too deep or it will result in your cooktop being pushed away from the back wall too far, negating the extra depth you built into your hood. We have an Abbaka 1400CFM fan on the roof, and it sucks well, even with a couple of bends. We've had no problem with smoke from wok cooking but amazingly we haven't used the grill yet. We're still dealing with tons of punch list items so we haven't gotten around to wrapping the grill parts in foil prior to firing it up. To fit the insert in the hood we had Modernaire ship the insert directly to out cabinetmaker so he could build the wood hood to match the insert. During the design phase we made mockups from foam board. I suggest you do the same if you want to play with the dimensions. Good luck with your project! Billy

I sometimes don't get it either. I see "announcements" of what some of my friends have read, but not all of them. Sometimes I see what they have posted on other people's pages, but not all. I'm sure it has to do with privacy and account settings and also allowing some "apps." I went through all the privacy and account settings and made them as private as possible.

I notice some of my Friends are using as app called Social Reader to publish the articles they read. If you don't choose to use that app or another like it (you will be asked -- choose cancel) then no one sees what you read.

It takes some time to learn how to use Facebook.

Here's the Facebook Help Center Basics if anyone is interested in actually learning how to use Facebook. I would suggest that, if you don't want to learn HOW to use it, please just don't use it.

oldgardner, thanks so much for the link, I've saved it to try again, for the third time, to set up a facebook again. My problem is, all the family is 2000 miles away, have busy lives, and don't have the time to explain how to use it to me. I'm sure the link you sent will help a bunch. Thanks.

oldgardener - that is a great site. Thanks for posting it. I did have an unpleasant experience with Facebook a few years ago. I thought I had selected all the right privacy settings but must have missed something. I quit within 24 hours but I have thought about trying again. I'll have to read you link thoroughly and then make a decision.

Anything you don't know how to do, just google search for the answers. Just remember when filling out your profile information, don't give out your personal information. I have seen some people say that they don't use their real names, but as far as I know...everyone that I know uses their real names....I don't know a soul that uses some fictitious name. I actually google searched for my name and not a thing came up that was ME on facebook. And if you have your security settings set to where only your friends can see it, then if someone goes to your facebook profile page by searching for your name(within facebook), all they will be able to see is your name and the profile picture you've chosen. On mine, I just use a picture of an animal and not my face...I'm not trying to reconnect with people I've known from the past. Just be careful that your don't accept bogus friends, I used to get that all the time for some reason but I never do anymore.
