Clarify my Facebook question

I want to say I'm so sorry that I offended you all by saying facebook was childish. I was basing my opinion on the link to ONE facebook page, and her use of it was childish. Not all of you.

The reason I asked, I wondered how you all use it because I had just started mine, had not found more than 2 friends, and saw no photos on their pages. I have spend too much time trying to understand the "privacy" settings, apparently don't understand them, and need to learn more. I was also concerned about using my name on the internet. I posted a comment regarding a news story, and lo and behold, it posted my name. I did not like that. It should have been my choice to add my name to a comment, not the webpage.

Obviously I need to take more time(again) to try to learn the privacy settings, and wait to make a judgement on facebook usage until Ihave viewed more than a few pages. One of the posts detailed how she sees a bunch of activities of a family member, that makes more sense to me. Thanks for all your input. Sorry for not making my reason for my childish comment more clear. It was based on one person.

Thanks, Carol. That's good of you. I wish I could help you sort out the privacy settings, but I barely understand them myself. However, others at the KT are more knowledgeable, and perhaps they'll see this and jump in.

Yes, thank you. I appreciate it.

You know, there must be thousands of websites we don't even know about. If you don't like fb, don't even bother with it unless the people you know irl encourage you to go there and can help you set it up to your satisfaction. You can do that on the phone in a few minutes with someone who knows the ropes. Otherwise, why bother?

I would hesitate to use just a standard extension cord or power strip. They simply are not made for that kind of outdoor use. There are outdoor extension cords with a three-way socket and there are even GFCI equipped boxes to allow 4 usable sockets. They have a built in reset switch. I got mine from Lowes. If you do use one of those make sure you have a way to protect it from the weather. Don't use these as a permanent solution. Sleepless

Alisande, just a heads up - Facebook has the same conditions that most websites do. Anything you post on their site gives them the right to use it. And they especially note that anything of yours that is shared by others gives them that same right even if you delete your account: "1 For content that is covered by intellectual property rights, like photos and videos (IP content), you specifically give us the following permission, subject to your privacy and application settings: you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, worldwide license to use any IP content that you post on or in connection with Facebook (IP License). This IP License ends when you delete your IP content or your account unless your content has been shared with others, and they have not deleted it." Not sure what subject to your privacy settings means, but the comment about sharing might give you pause. Here is a link that might be useful: Facebook Terms

I take it from your post that you are logged in. Maybe you need to download a program --like Adobe flash player or update your programs to be able to do some things??? I'm not sure. I think facebook has a lot of problems. Originally my name would only come up every now and then when I or someone searched for it -- It was very strange. I contacted them and they did fix it (thankfully), but it just doesn't seem like something that should he be happening -- I mean my name should either come up or not -- why only sometimes come up? -- what program does "sometimes"???... That's a Huge glitch. My girlfriend mentioned that she can't receive stuff (food, smiles, etc) when she does it freezes her phone (she's using her phone) so maybe it has something to do with the system you are using??? Hope you figure it out; let us know if you do. I would bet your log in setting is just set wrong (like my name was). Have you tried changing your password and re-logging in just to see if that would help? Good luck.

Hi! Okay, I usually have no problem figuring most things out. But the "new" facebook has stumped me! lol I wanted to post a jpg on it. I can upload it, but when I say share, it doesn't show up on my facebook homepage. Somebody posted to it, so I'm assuming that they were somehow notified that I posted a new picture, but it shows on my page, (when you click on your name at the top right) and not on my homepage where you can see everybody's posts. Is that the way it works? I can see Alisande's and Casey's pictures on the homepage, along with all my friends posts, but NOT my picture? I'm so confused. Wish I could have another cup of cofee! ahahahaha

I sometimes don't get it either. I see "announcements" of what some of my friends have read, but not all of them. Sometimes I see what they have posted on other people's pages, but not all. I'm sure it has to do with privacy and account settings and also allowing some "apps." I went through all the privacy and account settings and made them as private as possible.

I notice some of my Friends are using as app called Social Reader to publish the articles they read. If you don't choose to use that app or another like it (you will be asked -- choose cancel) then no one sees what you read.

It takes some time to learn how to use Facebook.

Here's the Facebook Help Center Basics if anyone is interested in actually learning how to use Facebook. I would suggest that, if you don't want to learn HOW to use it, please just don't use it.

oldgardner, thanks so much for the link, I've saved it to try again, for the third time, to set up a facebook again. My problem is, all the family is 2000 miles away, have busy lives, and don't have the time to explain how to use it to me. I'm sure the link you sent will help a bunch. Thanks.

oldgardener - that is a great site. Thanks for posting it. I did have an unpleasant experience with Facebook a few years ago. I thought I had selected all the right privacy settings but must have missed something. I quit within 24 hours but I have thought about trying again. I'll have to read you link thoroughly and then make a decision.

Anything you don't know how to do, just google search for the answers. Just remember when filling out your profile information, don't give out your personal information. I have seen some people say that they don't use their real names, but as far as I know...everyone that I know uses their real names....I don't know a soul that uses some fictitious name. I actually google searched for my name and not a thing came up that was ME on facebook. And if you have your security settings set to where only your friends can see it, then if someone goes to your facebook profile page by searching for your name(within facebook), all they will be able to see is your name and the profile picture you've chosen. On mine, I just use a picture of an animal and not my face...I'm not trying to reconnect with people I've known from the past. Just be careful that your don't accept bogus friends, I used to get that all the time for some reason but I never do anymore.
