Said goodbye to Kobi (pic) long and depressing

To update anyone who didn't read my post from last week:

My dog, Kobi has lost 10 lbs. in the past couple months.. down to 30 lbs. from 40. The vet has run blood tests.. all looks okay except for a high WBC (and something else that I can't remember). He took X-rays yesterday and can see air in the large intestine (Kobi has been very gassy lately) and some thickening of the small intestines possibly. Kobi is not eating much, today he is ignoring the chicken breast I made for him. He is drinking a lot, occasional watery vomit, some diarrhea. Depressed and not his usual self. The vet doesn't know what is wrong, but he is not ruling out cancer.

The next step is possibly a endoscopy. That will cost close to $1000. with no guarantee that we will know more than we do now. If it is cancer we'll have to decide if we want to do chemo. Kobi is 10. We certainly want to prolong his life if we can do so without causing him distress and without spending a fortune.

Some of you had suggested a ultrasound which would be a lot cheaper than the endoscopy and the vet thought that might be a good idea. My vet doesn't have an ultrasound machine, but I found a mobile vet that just happened to have a opening last Friday so I made an appointment. Friday morning Kobi was lying in the yard and then he took off somewhere. I searched the neighborhood but couldn't find him. He wasn't in very good condition so I know he couldn't have went far. Hours passed and I had to cancel the appointment for the ultrasound. Kobi had been gone for 6 hours when I spotted him lying in the back yard. He was dirty and had probably been in the lake. I had checked the back yard several times and he wasn't there earlier. His last big adventure I guess.

Saturday he continued to do poorly with moments where we thought he might be showing improvement. He was drinking... but hadn't ate anything (not even roast chicken) for 2 days now. Yesterday he just didn't look right and I knew it was time. He was having little episodes where he whimpered and I knew he was in pain. When DH got home from a work event we took Kobi to a neighboring town's vet clinic to have Kobi put down. I had hoped our regular vet could come to the house and euthanize Kobi here.. but they are closed on Sunday. It was a very peaceful passing, but DH and I both cried like babies. Kobi has been put in our little backyard pet graveyard.

Something else happened yesterday that let me know it was time. Winston (our 3 year old cat) jumped on the fireplace mantel in the morning sliding on the scarf that is there and bringing down half of what was up there - a 8X10 picture, my glass fragrance lamp, the mirror it sets on and a figurine of a angel surrounded by animals. The only thing that broke was the figurine. It fell 4 feet to a brick hearth and should have shattered into a million pieces, but instead it was fine except that the angel wings broke off in 1 perfect piece.

Oh Lydia, I am so sorry for your loss. You did the most loving and unselfish thing that we can ever do for our beloved babies. Hugs to you.

Thanks for sharing that explanation. It's quite scary to see what soap can do once it's absorbed into the body of a plant. I agree with your "weak soap short soaks" summary. It doesn't take that long for soap to do what it needs to do to the bugs as long as it makes direct contact. So there is no need to expose the plants to more of it than necessary. I guess the reason I felt the way I did about using the lowest effective concentration of soap is because that's the way I treat my own skin. We know soap is an enemy to human skin. It strips away the natural barrier of fatty acids, which keep skin moisturized and help prevent infection. There is also some research that shows that it interferes with our skin's ability to absorb vitamin D from sunlight. And it decimates populations of good microbes along with the bad ones. There have been studies that showed that these good microbe populations are correlated with lower levels of inflammation on minor everyday injuries. So, they are probably just as important to our skin as they are to our digestive system. Now, I'm embarrassed to say I don't know enough about the composition of a leaf to know how all this impacts them, but I think there's every reason to err on the side of caution. Especially after what you've learned, I'm going to be even more judicious about when I use soap. Of course that's not to say that it is more harsh than other insect preventatives. Who knows what negative impact systemics or neem oil or alcohol might have too. Keeping our plants strong and healthy in the first place is always going to be preferable to any invasive treatments - same as with us.

My SO was in a coma by the time I got to the hospital, a stroke at age 51, he never regained consciousness; but when I was stroking his head a tear rolled down. The nurse said, "Oh that's just the eye drops I put in". To this day, I'm not convinced.

Yes MamaGoose that is a wonderful thought provoking image. You and LL have been rung through the mill. I also had a few issues with medications for Joe. This is when I started to keep a detailed journal. Some thing that could not just be heard from me but written so the doctors and nurses would see I was keeping details and when he was told to take this or that med is showed up in his food journal as barfing his guts out. Stop the meds he was better. And even though these meds were supposed to keep him from getting sick they did not work that way. I was also very frustrated on the way they were taking care of him in the hospital. His skin was horrible and his toe nails were awful. No one even bothered to look at his feet but me. Interesting the first thing the home health nurse looked at was his feet and she was pleased I had cared for them She said it is common in hospital to neglect the feet. And when they brought him food they did not open the container even after notes taped to the tray and written on his board in the room. I would get there and everything closed up. He could not open the containers so he would go hungry. He was too out of it to ask. I had to spoon feed him for a couple weeks after we got home. Sometimes he fell back to sleep eating half a cup of custard. LBD sounds like a horrible disease. Spiders coming from the ceiling is more than enough to make a person go over the edge. Feeling so bad for your and and Hubby. MG and LL. We did get some sun. We canceled the dentist appointment yesterday AM. too much snow and emergency weather alerts saying stay off the roads. I think we got 5 or 6 inches of snow but at some point in the night there was a bit of rain so it laid down an ice slick under the snow. This morning we woke to sun and about 13 degrees. We did breakfast then out to put the snow plow on the ranger. Joe had about half of it done then I went out to help him do the rest. I know he wanted to do it all by himself but it is good for me to refresh my brain on how it goes on and comes off. Then I went off to the post office and Joe plowed the driveway. LOL He even plowed a swath across the back yard for the kitties to travel on their adventures.

I am probably not going to be posting many pics when asking questions any more because I find that too many people are only looking at the pictures, NOT reading the text, and thus their responses are either directly contrary to something I've said in the text (for instance "get rid of XYZ" or "the color of ABC is wrong" when I've already said in the accompanying that I love XYZ so it's not going anywhere or that the color of ABC is really more toward mauve when it shows up as puce in the picture) or have nothing at all to do with what I'm asking. I find that intensely frustrating. I have almost no pictures of my current house because it's still in "whatta dump" stage. No paint (walls need a TON of work), short on furniture, dreadfully designed kitchen that's a perpetual mess because there's nowhere to put things... and forget outside pictures, a few weeks ago we ripped out almost every trace of vegetation outside (and will not be replacing it until next year, probably fall '09 to get the end-of-season sales) due to a honeysuckle invasion that I swear was growing by feet per day and was starting to attack the porch. I'll happily post pictures of my previous house because I think I did a pretty decent job with it. We're not on Google Maps but we're kinda-sorta on Google Earth - but the best you can get is a fuzzy whitish blob in the midst of a bunch of other fuzzy whitish blobs on a fuzzy grayish stripe. No closeups. Our town is clearly not a high priority as far as Google is concerned! WRT security - we live in a somewhat iffy neighborhood so I am one HECK of a lot more worried about the people a dozen houses down the street breaking in looking for meth money than I am about someone trying to track me down via the Internet (I Googlebate every so often just to see what's out there re: me) from half a dozen states away. I've been email-stalked and -harassed a bunch of times in my 18 years online because of my outspoken ;-) opinions and my ISPs have always been helpful in dealing with it. However, I've had meet-ups with a whole slew of people I've met online over the years, twice flying nearly cross-country to do so, and it's been grand fun.

Here's the angel figurine. I notice that the moose did get a little scrape to the nose, but I was surprised that none of the little animals were broken off. The wings just broke off perfectly in 1 piece, I will be able to glue it back together.

Sorry for the loss of Kobi. It's never easy to lose a member of our families, but Kobi is no longer suffering. You gave him a good life, and he knew that. Hugs to you.

Oh, Lydia..... I am so sorry for you and J. The pain is horrible but you must remember that you did the right thing and that Kobi isn't in any more pain. You gave him a great life, too, better than he would have had with anyone else, that's for sure!

I'm glad he scampered off for one last swim. Bless his little rebellious heart! :)

Whenever we lose a pet...I copy their picture and add this poem to it and take it to our vet's office...He's got one hanging in his office and one in the waiting room and another in one of the examining rooms...He says it brings people peace...I hope it does for you too...(((Lydia)))

I am so sad for you, Lydia. I know how deep the grief goes but the memories, how sweet they are. We are so lucky to have these furry friends even for a short time. The years of joy far out weigh the heartbreak.
