funny you should ask because i literally JUST got done hanging a few things in my kitchen....i'll send you some pics!!! i was thinking plates. i actually bought some that i was going to hang but i think i have a plate hanging fetish as i have a whole wall of plates in my dining room and then small plates hung in my living room. so i went for something different.....anyway, the plates i bought were rocsher hobnail collection in white platinum. they are just plain white plates with a dark pattern around the edge....maybe 3 of those in a row would work.

anyway, you can pic just about anything you like. i don't think i would do the wrought iron look in your kitchen. just not feeling it.

i'll try to take a quick pic of the plates i bought (at marshalls for $3 i might add!) just for some ideas.

why not just do a silver tray like the pic? i LOVE that....

HA! I just spent days going to stores and searching on the internet looking for anything that might work--along the lines that you are considering. I didn't want anything that might be affected by steam or heat, or that could be knocked onto the induction cooktop which we already broke once when DH dropped a hammer on it.

We actually had had a local arts and crafts tile place design a backsplash just for over the cooktop. We love it, and had it designed so we could hang it like a picture and take it with us whenever we move in the future. However, in the end we just didn't feel comfortable with the cost.

We have medium cherry cabinets. I tried various different metal wall art, trays, painted plates, trivets, custom tile pieces, etc. There were a couple that I thought a designer would probably prefer. However, I have settled on a 16x16" hammered silver look design that is very pleasing to me. The color isn't quite right, but it's the one I like looking at the most, it's light weight, and easy to wipe off. It looks better than the $30 it costs, and will do until I find something that I like better--if I ever do!

I think an oval silver tray like you have shown in the picture would be beautiful in your kitchen!

You could a variety of fun, low-cost and temporary things in that space. Just go with something that can handle grease, steam etc. I love the idea of hanging large colorful platter, some metalwork item (Home Goods is a great source for that). If vintage is your style, go with something quirky. If your space needs color, this is a great place for a shot of color.
I just mounted with double sided velcro, a vintage tin advertisement (with a pumpkin image) onto our tile blacksplash. When we get tired of it we can swap it out.

Yes, I like the idea of doing an antique silver platter of some sort, like the photo above. Do you guys really think oval would work? I was picturing something rectangular.

Jimandanne - I'm not overly worried about anything being impacted by steam or heat. I figure if it goes "bad" then I can just replace it. I like the idea of experimenting there, almost like accessories, then trying out something else!

I was wondering how we would hang it. Gwent - you just put velcro? Did you just mount it on the backsplash tile? How much weight can it carry? I'm intrigued by this, as I was thinking we'd have to put screws into the tile and wall.

I think either can go on with heavy duty velco or the heavy mounting tape that I used (hate to think what will happen when the battery runs out haha...I tried to mount the tape part on the piece that open up to the battery so I won't have to pull at the tile....)...Just be careful that it's on WELL so that it doesn't fall into the cooktop...

I love the silver tray over the range. I hate to rain on your parade, however, I believe it would tarnish easily and need frequent polishing. I think the steam and vapors from cooking would cause it to tarnish more than if it were just sitting out. If you put it up securely, but take it down frequently to polish, soon it isn't going to be hanging up there so securely.

The platter would look very nice. An old, slightly distressed, oval mirror would give the sparkle of the tray and would be easy to clean. It could be heavier and might need to hang from picture wire and a hanger, with double sided tape at the bottom to keep it from swaying. Good luck!

Moremoremore - I love your clock, it looks amazing there. It almost doesn't look like a clock, but more of a modern art piece. I can only hope to have something as pretty above my cooktop. We already have a "special" clock in the kitchen that goes in the open shelf above the desk area. I bought it for DH, it's a pocketwatch clock from Pottery Barn. I bought it for him as the desk are is "his" special area, and also for me being a brat about him stealing space away from the bottom of my pantry to house his computer equipment.

Bbstx and Fuletcity - I'm thinking of going with a mirror with an "antiqued" finish so if it gets some grease or splatters on it, it wouldn't be the end of the world! I've found that I've been cleaning this kitchen so diligently, even more so than normal and I'm a bit of a neat freak anyway.

I was thinking of getting a mirror with this type of a finish. Nothing so clear so I'm not staring at myself while cooking. =)

Mercury glass! It would look stunning in your kitchen. The silver will pick up the pendants, and the crackle will pick up the pattern in your granite.

You'll just have to shop eBay and antique shops and the like to find the right thing.

We have an antique Persian copper tray hanging on the terracotta minibrick backsplash above our range top. The backsplash tiles and a similar tray are in this picture of our samples:

Only the nail in the backsplash is "permanent". We can change to a different tray or art object any time we wish.

Ikea has this really great open steel shelving called "Grundtal". It's basically steel rods and looks like it could have come from the Smallbone accessoires department.

If you were to put two rows of that shelving in the space and then fill the shelves with some old-looking apothecary bottles with cork stoppers to keep spices and sauces in yoou'd have a nice "old world" look with a hint of the serious chef at work.

Here is a kitchen from someone on FKB (sorry unknown FKB person!) that I had saved to my idea file. Always thought it was super cool.

IIRC, they got it at Crate & Barrel. Looks like something you could hose down outside a couple times a year.

If you went with an open structural piece, something dark would look cool and relate to the island and the darker flecks in your granite. That would certainly create a new focal point though. Something silver-ish would blend in a bit better. Guess it depends on how saucy you're feeling. :)

Maydl - All of the materials you have there are going to go together so well. That's a good point - the nail is permananet but the art piece on it is not.

Sailorman - Another great idea!! I was regretting not putting a ledge on my range hood for displaying dishes, so a temporary ledge would be the next best thing!!

Smilingjudy - That looks like a firescreen that i Have from Crate and Barrel. I agree, something silver would blend well. I like that i can play there.

I really like the piece behind the stove in Bamaspice's kitchen. If you find the right piece to fit your space, but its the wrong color - you could faux it to match your kitchen.

Will putting in a screw to hang something on ceramic tile above stove break the tile?? Nervous about it but the model home like the home we are building did it. Any suggestions or tips appreciated

I would love to see something like this, to add some warmth to the space. Either hang them or rest them so they are easy enough to 'unhook' and scrub down if they get grimy from cooking, grease splatter, etc. I think it would be hard to keep something that is metal and/or intricate clean in that spot. Also, I that these serve form and function!
