what's the cheapest way to make a huge vent hood like this pic
Comments (22)I just posted what will be the same advice to another post for hoods. Yosemite makes a pre cast hood that is pretty good looking that is somewhat similar to your picture without the corbels. They do not sell direct. My website will have it listed in a shopping cart for approx $900. A vent to go with it runs about $200 - 400 the larger fan unit costs more. If you click on the link at the end of the written text introducing Yosemite you can see pictures of it. On the 2nd page of hood pictures on Yosemite's site you will see they have extensions for different ceiling heights. Stanisci is a company that makes wood hoods with lots of curves in various heights and widths. They do not sell direct as their business model is to sell unfinished hoods to national sold cabinet companies that do not want to build them on site. Dealer costs when supplied by the cabinet company and finishded to match by them generally are $2,000 - $10,000 which is then marked up from there for profit of the local retailer. A few websites sell them to the public. You will have to finish them to match your cabinets if you go that route. I would think you could get a go painter to put a finish on it onsite that makes it look like cast stone. Comments (10)I stay out of these things most times but if I were talking to a client of mine (or my wife) First- I'd suggest not to do a mantle hood as narrow you have pictured. But if you must go that way then ditto to what green said. I typically advise to keep a keen on the total budget and do NOT look at the cost of any individual item until it comes time to trim the budget. Everything anyone "wants" is expensive when viewed without context. The question becomes can it fit in your budget, is it important enough. Next- avoid poor imitations- if you can't get the specific thing to look right then let it go-completely. A lousy imitation looks like one (ala the LWO thread) Instead if your trying to generate more interest do it another way, or somewhere else. Most folks are happier with less done well than more done poorly. You only need one or two things that make your heart sing every time you go in the room years down the road. Often those are small things, smaller than what people focus on during the process....See MoreHELP NEEDED with wood species for range hood, mudroom and pantry!
Comments (3)will your kitchen look just like that photo? all white with just a bit of accent wood? If so, I don't think choosing the alder over the oak will make that much difference. However, oak takes staining more evenly than alder. I made a Media console from Alder and stained that and a solid Alder door. The Alder is smoother, without the graining that you see in the oak. So if all these woods will be visible at one spot, I would prob just do the white oak. I actually like the looks of i t better than the Alder. Why don't you have him ceruse the white oak that's going around the vent hood? That would give you a different look. I've done it with oak and it looks really cool. You basically use a liming wax or a white paint rubbed into the grain after you stain it. The white shows up as contrast against the dark stain. this is cerused oak. you can do any color. I've done it in black and one in turquoise. It would be a nice accent around the hood....See MoreCircus Peanut
