Ideas for wall near window and stove without upper cabinets

Wish I saw this blog BEFORE I decided on my kitchen layout! Love the look of open space on wall with sole kitchen window/sink . I am 5'3" and DH is 6'4". Can barely get to upper cabinets! We decided to put our gas slide in range along the same wall but now have problems deciding on tile design. Would like to use granite countertop and need ideas for back splash. We have an L shape kitchen. There is a tiny section of wall between upper and lower on other wall. Thoughts are to use 3" backsplash of granite/paint above from Fridge to stove area. Above the range - some sort of tile design up to ceiling. Then continue with 3" splash and paint. We are taking down the dining room wall so stove will be where wall is as shown in layout. Any suggestions?

I would prefer a distance equal to half the depth of the upper...so if the upper is 12" at least 6" from the trim edge to the cabinet. Note that this is a preference, often times there is not space for this. I have also seen people put in small square cabinets with glass on two sides next to the window and it looks good but only offers functionality if you like to collect little things to display in the glass cabinet...

The window film is a static film and is completely removable. You could buy it this afternoon have it up by this evening and if you decided you did not like it, you could take it down it any point in time. It's the least of your worries. The island is just too small for the space and that's what looks odd and disproportionate. The very visible trash bin is just inappropriate for such a beautiful kitchen. Each of the other elements is quite pretty and I don't think I would mess with them. Since you're planning on redoing the countertop I would add onto the island (and have the add on portion include an enclosed the trash bin and a recycling bin too if you have that in your area). I am not sure why you are saying that the stove is too close to the refrigerator. They look pretty distant to me. What is the issue with their locations when you say "close"? If you are going to move that stove, I recommend that you post a layout of your floor plan and let some of the design mavens on the site offer their suggestions as to how they would rearrange the kitchen. If you start moving the cabinets around, will you have to redo the floor around them or was everything placed on top of the existing floor?

Toronto Vetenerian, Thanks. I was thinking exactly the same thing that the bottles would have all toppled the first time I pulled out the drawer quickly. Editing: we are thinking of selling our current house and moving into one of our rental houses (for tax reasons.) We would probably live there 3 to 5 years before figuring out where we want to retire. I would be giving up my beautiful kitchen. I told my husband the only way I would do this is if I got to redo the kitchens and baths in the old house. I would do it on a very tight budget. It has to be consistent with the neighborhood and the house. That would mean a huge EDITING for me. I still have some time. I am just perusing through ideas so that I can do it on a budget and still get the big bang I want.

That was a little rough but, I do appreciate everyone's feedback! Two changes in particular I'm taking to heart: 1) 42" vent instead of the planned 36": While some say matching the vent to the stove width is adequate, many more say to go +3" on each side. 2) Not enough wall space for 22" window framing with 24" cabinets and 42" vent (thanks GD): I can address this by both reducing the cabinets to 21" AND mounting them on the side wall instead of the back wall (yes, the upper back shelf will be hard to reach, we'll also need door restrictors to avoid hitting the wall). While #2 above gives me ~24" more back wall space, I lose ~6" to the wider vent so, I end up with 18" more back wall space. I spoke the the window supplier and he said there's a 4 1/4" (!!!) overall space from window edge to actual glass for a vinyl casement windows. I may consider an aluminum frame as the frame is much smaller (but, it only has a 10YR warranty). The window guy mentioned the GC can bury much of the new construction vinyl frame in the drywall so I could get more glass (and the frame won't look as big). Has anyone ever heard of that before? I'm not a fan of the 3" matching granite strip as a backsplash. It's been discussed here before, and many think it's dated. In looking at your photos and plans, I can see why you'd do that.

Do you have enough storage that you can go without the uppers? Even if you'd need to get a step stool, you might consider putting them in for items you don't need to reach often. Without cabs, were you planning some art work or the like in those spots? Maybe frame one of those cool wall drawings to hang there? ;)

I did my range wall without uppers except one sideway cab on the wall end. My DH wanted windows, I thought about floating shelves, post rack or since I have a beam above I also thought about wire baskets for onions, garlic and potatoes. So far, 3 years, the wall is still blank. We did a 4 inch soapstone on the range wall and cab matching wainscot on the sink wall.
