Comments (21)Two of our pets are on special diets for urinary tract issues, so we get their food from our vet. Our local pet supply store (Centinela) gives 10% off on Tuesdays if you are 55 or over. They have a good selection and monthly coupons, so I get the rest of the food there. You might look to see if there is something similar in your area. Comments (16)My dog has food allergies. I tried lots of the premium foods, Innova, CA Natural, etc. Nothing helped. For the past year he has been eating Timberwolf. You can find it at www.timberwolforganics.com. It is not cheap but he hasn't had any problems on it and now at age 11 is a furry bear. No vet bills for skin issues. You can order directly from the manufacturer and shipping is free. That would eliminate your problem of limited local resources. It would be worth a try. One thing though, he doesn't eat anything other than this brand. You'd have to cut out any snacking on other things. Comments (32)Oh, gosh, if I put things in capital letters I do it for emphasis. I would never be so boorish as to yell at someone on a forum. So if I have offended anyone I apologize. My mother was a squabbler and it was really embarrassing for me as a teenager because she would take anybody on and run her mouth till she figured she'd "won". But my best friend had a mother who always said, "If you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all". I really respected that woman for her restraint and her good manners. So you won't find me being obnoxious on a forum, on purpose, anyway. I appreciate everyone's input. Even if you don't all have the same opinions, it still gives me lots to think about. And, knowing that some things sound more harsh when they are written than the writer may have meant, I try to take everything other people say at face value. I love these forums and feel like I have learned so much from them. Cearbhaill, I'm going to offer Pearl a raw chicken wing tip today and see what she does. Stbonner, I will watch out for gluten on the ingredients list from now on. And also "meat by-products" or "meat and bone meal". Thanks for that information. Those who use blood-soaked sawdust from the floor, what would they call that? Does that fall in the "meat by-products" category? Minnie, I think that's a good idea you have there. I think it would be good to e-mail all these pet food producers who have the above items on their lists of ingredients and tell them we know what that is and we will not be buying their products as long as those ingredients are on the list. If they are just asked "if" they include euthanized pets and roadkill in their food, they'll just find someone who works there that doesn't know about "anything" that they put in the food, who can then truthfully tell you "I know of no such ingredients in our brand". Here's the ingredients list on the Chicken Soup brand of cat food: chicken, chicken meal, cracked pearled barley, chicken fat preserved with mixed tocopherols, ocean fish meal, white rice, potatoes, oatmeal, millet, natural chicken flavor, salmon, turkey, duck, flaxseed, sodium bisulfate, egg product, methionine, potassium chloride, choline chloride, dried chicory root, taurine, kelp, carrots, peas, apples, tomatoes, blueberries, spinach, dried skim milk, cranberry powder, rosemary extract, parsley flakes, yucca schidigera extract, L-carnitine, Enterococcus facium, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation solubles, dried Aspergillus oryzae fermentation extract, zinc proteinate, vitamin E supplement, niacin, manganese proteinate, copper proteinate, zinc sulfate, manganese sulfate, copper sulfate, thiamine mononitrate, vitamin A supplement, biotin, potassium iodide, calcium pantothenate, riboflavin, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin B12 supplement, manganese oxide, sodium selenite, vitamin D supplement, folic acid. Would there be calcium in the cartilage that's in the wing? When I had cats as a child we always fed them milk and table scraps, and they supplemented it by hunting. Then people started saying cats couldn't digest milk and not to feed it. My dog, Sonny, has gotten so that he doesn't want to eat the dry Chicken Soup dog food. So to about a cup of dry food I've been adding about a half cup of leftovers from our most recent meal and some water that had sausage cooked in it (fat removed), or water with dry milk powder added, and he has been cleaning the bowl....See MoreGrain free dog food
Comments (48)lukkiirish, I'm sorry for your experiences. It sounds like you've been seeing sub-par GP vets, you've become distrustful, and you do have the right to complain. You need a new vet, and you should definitely see specialists when a medical problem seems to be beyond the ability of your GP to treat properly. You can go on your own, no referral is needed. sjerin, I've always had conflicting views when it comes to winter weather and rain. I wish it could just rain overnight and allow these 75-80 degree days all the time. Animal nutrition? it's binary, it's either adequate or not. When a commercial product is found that a pet can tolerate digestively, the pet will receive adequate nutrition with all required vitamins, trace minerals, etc, and will thrive. Changing to a product with sweet potatoes and not rice, or fish and not lamb, accomplishes nothing nutritionally....See Morelabradoodlemom

14 years agoLook down to the right of this photo and you will see an old crock. It's a big one that sits right off our kitchen in our laundry room. It sits next to the the big storage cabinets. We keep our dog food in that crock and use a scoop. It's in plain sight but looks kind of decorative, to us anyway.

14 years agohey, this probably isn't helpful if you've already plotted everything out, but we converted an old broom closet into a built in pantry, with the cupboards set up so that there is room for lucy's bowls. the rest of the bottom drawer is filled with other puppy stuff - her bags, treats, lint brushes...
we keep her food in a glass cannister in the bottom drawer. She eats about 2 cups a day and we refill the cannister from the big bag in the basement about every week and a half.

14 years agoWe store dog food in a 6-gallon can from "The Popcorn Factory". It sits on a pull out shelf in a base cabinet along with a 3-gallon can that holds dog treats. We can also, just barely, fit a second shelf in that cabinet to hold leashes, extra collars, dog meds, etc.
We planned for what we call our "Pet Center" but I goofed when I planned the cabinet. I should have specified something like the trash pullout with the door attached to a pull out shelf. Unfortunately, the cabinet has 2 doors so I can't even retro-fit it. However, despite this, it's a good setup for us.

14 years agoOur garage is on the main level with our kitchen, so we store bulk, opened bags in these:
They hold approx 25+lbs of food each and come with round scoops. We have a large Tupperware cereal container in the house we keep full for their meals and refill when necessary. Like the above poster, we have a section of cabinets in our laundry room (next to garage) where we store all the dog and cat supplies. Large, unopened bags of dog food are stored in the coat closet, just inside garage. It's extra deep (actually, it's behind the wall shown in photo) and wonderful for storing extra food and cat litter. I buy everything in bulk.

14 years agoWith the quantity of dog food we keep on hand, if we kept it in the kitchen, we would have no room in there for human food! It seems our dogs all need different foods, so we buy four 30-pound bags at a time. We have four giant dogs (two great danes, a mastiff/dane mix, and a dane/?? mix), so they also prefer their food bowls elevated. We use large Rubbermaid bins to store their food, and their bowls sit on top of their bins.
So, since I don't have much of a suggestion for you, I guess the real reason for my post was to be able to show off my babies. :)

During the remodel Rusty's airtight container of food has been near the kitchen next to his food bowls, but it will be going back to the laundry room now that the kitchen is finished. Reason? It is just such a fun little parade in the morning as one picks up the measuring cup (from his food bowl) and walks to the laundry room and back to the food bowls. Rusty is tap dancing respectfully a half step behind the entire time.
I could not resist pictures here, nor could I successfully resize the one below! You can probably figure out that he is peering through the temporary wall. This was taken before he ripped the bottom by continually jumping through it once the mystery was gone.

14 years agoI love all of the dog pics --- my kids and I were cracking up, especially on the sitting on the couch pic, that is classic!
We use the Rubbermaid totes for dog food, with the bowl on top. Now that Lanie is getting older, it helps her to not have to get too low to the ground. In our future kitchen, I am thinking about a pull out trash drawer, though it wouldn't be airtight unless you put a lid on it, and then the pull-out convenience diminishes. I really liked the decorative crock idea.

14 years agowell, now lucy is feeling left out and wants her picture up too! since i already showed off her dog bowls...
I have to admit, I did worry a bit when planning her little bowl nook that we might be making it too small for other dogs. But it would make a good spot for shoes or we could actually move the drawers down and make it more like a traditional built in if we sold the house. But it's perfect for us!

14 years agoTHIS is why I love this forum, and all of you! I post a message, take a day trip, and come back to an inbox full of WONDERFUL ideas, and even more adorable pictures of furbies!
The tough thing is we always buy gigantic bags from BJ's/Costco and I worry about putting them in the garaage where it gets super hot.
Our pantry has 30" wide cabinets with double doors, which is why a pull out option is tough. But, maybe I'll do the tupperware bin idea with about a weeks worth of food in the pantry and then the big bag in our coat closet or laundry room. Sadly, neither of those are very close to the kitchen. But, I definitely want the bag out of sight!
I also may play around with the decorative crock idea...
THANKS for expanding my vision for this! :-)
And, I have to share one last picture of Riesee, to maybe make ya'll laugh! She wears snow booties in the winter to protect her paws and she LOVES them!!! Here she is, standing on our LONG GONE 70's vinyl floors! :-)

14 years agoWe put in another trash/recycle with the two bins and a drawer above in our laundry/mud room for the dog food. With the heavy duty glides the two bins hold a 40lb bag of dog food. We use the top drawer for their brushes, medicines,training treats etc.
Maggie and Roanie also got their very own heated slate floor in there to dry off and warm up in the colder months. However, my little one was abused in her first home and has an issue with any compressor noise and she's afraid of the darn SubZero refirgerator we have in there!
(Yep, you are seeing spots the countertops are recycled bowling lanes.)They're big babies and get to go everywhere with us...even boating last weekend!

Now for my soapbox - both my dogs are rescued, the older one from her final day at an 87% kill shelter where she was surrendered with her pedigreed papers along with her brother (he was adopted also) and one from an abusive home where she was crated for over 20 hours a day from 8 weeks old. I volunteer at our local Humane Society and really encourage everyone to consider adopting a homeless pet!

14 years agoWe are making a 36' 'Dog Garage' or cubby under a long counter run. Basically we will have a finished cubby where a lower base cabinet should go. We plan on putting dog bowls and his bed in the cubby.I plan on keeping the dog food and treats in the pantry. We usually keep a 30lb bag of dog food and tons of treats. However, Baron eats mostly fresh food that we keep in the fridge. Currently the dog food is behind the side door and treats are stuffed into any cabinet that is not full!
Mom no more Lowes!
Look Mom someone put a bridge behind me!
Can we move into the new house NOW! SIGH.
