Comments (7)alanis, I have the membership. The list is huge. If you're interested in some foods, I can let you know if they're on it. One of mine has had terrible allergies since he was 4 months. I tried different proteins, grain free, and raw. Nothing worked. We finally did allergy testing and it turns out it was environmental. This was 1.5 years ago. He's on immunotherapy now and we need to switch the formulation, not helping. To really determine if it's a food allergy, you need to do an elimination diet. There's no allergy test that can accurately determine what food your dog's allergic to. The better labs state this on their tests, and your vet should let you know as well. There's a few ways to go about doing an elimination diet. Both require prescribed foods. Our was a hydrolyzed soy protein. You keep them them on it for at least 8 weeks with no other food, or treats, not human or dog. Just nothing but the prescription food. Then, if the itching stops, you'll know it is the food and not environmental. If it is the food, after the 8 weeks you can add one protein source and see how they do. If the itching doesn't start back up- you'll know they tolerate it. if it does, you stop adding the protein and wait another 8 weeks, then try something new again. Rinse and repeat. If it environmental, do an allergy test. Immunotherapy may be the way to go, at least it can't hurt. But it can take over a year to see results. Then there's also the new "miracle drug" Apoquel. This is a life saver for many dogs. It's a new medication from Zoetis (came out about two years ago now.) It works by inhibiting the function of a variety of pruritogenic and proinflammatory cytokines, as well as cytokines involved in allergy that are dependent on JAK1 or JAK3 enzyme activity4" It's supposed to me much safer than steroids, but it's still difficult to get in many places and Zoetis can't keep up with demand. Mine is on Apoquel right now. But Because it's still fairly new, I've had blood work done twice to make sure there aren't any problems. Zoetis doesn't recommend it, saying it's perfectly safe, but my dermatologist vet and regular vet are both on board with the blood testing. Either way good luck- and like I said, if there's a specific food you're interested in, let me know and I can check the editor's choice list. But I will say, when you're picking out a new food, make sure it only lists one type of protein. You need to read the ingredients and see what's in it because even something called Beef and Bones can have a significant amount of pork and chicken....See MoreLow-cal diet is causing personality changes
Comments (72)Well, I'm offended for her. I wish her vet would have diagnosed the thyroid before she was put through a diet when it was no fault of her own or her own lack of portion control ;0) Are there doggie endos? Poor girl. Bet she feels much better with the meds soon and will drop those pounds by beach weather. (not to mention her knees and hips are probably calling out 'thank you' already)...See MoreDogProbiotics - which one do u use???
Comments (41)nannygoat18: all the best with the new regimen!! its so hard figuring out what your pet needs and what works for them. we just started to eliminate things that might be bothering him. i found a very good resource at my independently owned feed store and he recommended changing the protein source. so that's how i started him on lamb. he was vomiting square chunks and we thought it was sweet potato from original food but it wound up being carrots from treats. those went right in the trash!! i think they were a milk bone variety we bought the day we adopted him. annztoo: i did look into his present food and there are a lot of carbs., so i am going to do some research on the right mix. i am afraid to give him food with a high fat content b/c they thought that could be a problem for him when he had the gastric inflammation. when he had the GI inflammation they did say he had pancreatitis. on the 2nd U/S, no inflammation in the GI tract. Good for you that u make his food and you found something that works for him!!! whatever happened to the days of "you get a puppy and they go on Purina Puppy Chow and then "graduate" to Dog Chow!! our 1st two dogs were on that and both lived to 14 with no gastro issues!! back in the 80's & 90's.... way back :) right now he is on no meds! i really think between switching foods from the foster in texas, then the long ride to Jersey, then the Jersey foster, then us, his system was in disarray. in the fosters and rescue group they feed them whatever is donated so he could and probably had his food changed 3 times in 3 weeks. not good!! then we lavished him with treats, 2 surgeries in 6 days and his system has totally out of wack!! then multiple cycles of antibiotics, stress, plastic and more than likely a chicken intolerance, its no wonder he's been sick !! now we just need him to gain weight and keep moving forward! in the last 2 weeks or so, he has been much better. so we are sticking with VeRus, no reason to switch. all the blood in stool is gone, mucus is gone, did have semi-loose stool for a day and half but that's cleared up. i have added Firm Up! pumpkin and cranberry supplement to his food once a day. i only give 1 teaspoon. it say he can get 1-2 tbspns for his weight but as with everything with him, i go slow!! the only thing 'not right' is he does get lethargic at times and he is ALWAYS hungry!! so the food might not be filling him?? we are getting him tested for whipworm. our vet cannot do it, special test, they have to send it out. just waiting for a fresh sample to drop off! DH was looking into possible parasites and whipworm came up and he did fit some of the criteria. most importantly its seems to be a problem in the South -check-and does cause lethargy and hunger - check. so we shall see!...See Morepkramer60
