Please help me - I am in a panic at finished product

lizbeth73

I am not sure about my newly installed granite. I had to pick the slab without having my actual cabinet sample because we had them made by an Amish company a few hrs away. Now I am not sure if the granite matches the appliances and cabinets. I have spent so much money that if I have to I will replace it. Any thoughts - am I being crazy or does this whole room clash?

From what I can see, the cabinets and granite go fine together, and it looks like the hardware matches as well. To be honest, though, I'm not fond of the wall color with the cabinets and granite - that may be the problem. I'm curious about what some others here say - many have a wonderful eye for color and might be able to suggest something different.

  • mikomum

I agree with purplepansies---it's the paint color that needs to be changed. Is the color extensive in your house? What other colors would you consider? How much light do you have? What colors are in the surrounding rooms?I think everything else flows beautifully.

Relax - Brugs are tough plants native to the Andes. Keep them healthy, fertlized and watered well, so the plants will overwinter dormant. All of mine are planted directly into outdoor beds from early spring until frost. In the fall, I dig and pot the rootballs. Plants are pruned just enough to fit through the basement doorway - where they are stored on a cool cement floor with good air circulation. I water them lightly once a month, to keep the stems alive but not enough to promote new growth. By early spring, they start producing leaves. Keep in mind, that even if all the above ground stems wither, the rootball will rapidly produce new growth. As a backup, I save cuttings taken from woody growth in the fall. Kept in a container of water placed in a basement window, they are absolutely fine until spring. Currently, my Brugs are still in the ground - loaded with buds and a second flush of blooms. I even noticed a few seed pods. Good luck!

Please help me I am lost. What to do about lighting finishes?

    Q

    Comments (6)
I'm happy you went with your instinct. Personally I don't like every finish to match and you'll find that you will never look at the rings around the can lights but you will either admire or hate your light fixtures depending on whether you go with what you like or with what you think it needs to be. I have different metal finishes in almost every room in my house and my kitchen actually has 3 different ones and I love it. The panic you are feeling is just the culmination of months and months of decisions -- you are literally worn out. It's also the anticipation of every single decision coming together for the final "reveal" that you'll have soon. Take deep breaths and keep saying "this too shall pass."

Thanks moonshadow!!! And I think it's unanimous :-) I agree the size and color tones go better in my room, I just needed a kick in the behind to stop doubting myself. DH kept saying well if we have a tv cabinet we don't use why do we want a bigger one we don't use? But then he came up with the bright idea that this one would hold a wide screen and would probably get some use! He doesn't care about scale and tone like you guys do so that's why I brought it here. That picture does it for me, hope to get this swap done soon!

gooster, cpartist and Vith, thank you everyone. You are all saying the same thing and this is helping so much. He is here now and I didn't even mention my crazy request to change the whole thing. He came up with very similar ideas to yours, matching the cabinet trim and possibly lengthening it a bit. I have to go with it now. Should be done soon. I'll post pics. Any other ideas, let me know :)

Here is a close up of the granite, which has blues in it too. Maybe the paint is what is throwing me off. Up close it looks like it matches but from afar it does not. I am just sick to my stomach. If it was the paint that would be the best case. My husband may kill me!

I have to agree with mikomum and purplepansies..... I think the granite, cabs and hardware are coordinated BEAUTIFULLY but I'm not so sure about the paint color. Seems like it's a little too cool and that a warmer color would be better suited. Take a deep sigh of relief, if paint is the only thing in question, you did great!

It might be the wall paint is a bit intense, but I think it looks good, overall. Think the granite and cabinet hardware look awesome together.

I hope someone who knows how to photoshop takes a look at this.....
I'd love to help you figure out a color. I went through 3 paint colors myself......Is that a taupe I see in the stone? I think it's a good bet to pull from the lightest color in the stone and try to get close to it.

I think the granite, cabinets, hardware and appliances go beautifully together. As others have said, it's the blue paint that's clashing with the granite. Your cabinets are gorgeous!

  • sayde

Agree it is the paint color. Change to a neutral or if you like a deeper color, a dark dusky brown. Cabs are just beautiful. Once the paint is changed you will see just how great the granite and cabs look together.

I do not care for the blue wall paint tough, I think it distracts from the beauty.

I think the paint color should be paler blue. Maybe more of a gray-blue. I see gray and light blue but it could be my monitor. But definitely its the paint - not the granite!

  • artemis78

We have very similar granite in our kitchen now; walls are painted BM Pearl Harbor (which is a peachy color) that seems to work well with the granite (both chosen by previous owner). Our cabinets are painted, but are rose so they have a similar hue. (In fact, I think yours was exactly the look they were trying to approximate--our knobs and pulls are square Mission-style oil-rubbed bronze.) So I'd try a light color in that family---that one might be too peachy for your taste, but something in that family. A taupe or warm gray might work, too.

    Good luck!

  • dianalo

My monitor shows some gray in the granite. I'd go with a light silvery gray color to lighten up a little or some color that had a silver tone to it, whether it be taupe, sage or peach.

  • marcydc

I think its the paint too. I'd try a beige taupe.

Actually, I would go buy a bunch of the paint samples and put them and come back to this crowd for a vote - they are good!

The cabinets and granite and hardware are beautiful together! Before reading any of the responses I felt like it was the paint as well! It is definitely the paint, it doesn't have the right feel for the kitchen!

I'm color blind. I also realize that my PC screen may not be accurately displaying the colors in your picture.

But I think the paint needs to lighten up a bit. Silver grey might be nice.

Thank you all for your kind words on the expensive parts of the remodel. I have backed off the ledge since I posted. I am frustrated that it is the paint because we so painstakingly worked to get it right. I even talked to a granite person who said that color was perfect for Dakota Mahogany - I sought out that color after that conversation and then matched it to the slab. I do not know what went wrong. Up close to the granite it coordinates well but far away it looks like a red slab of granite with a blue gray wall. In person the blue is not as bright as the pictures make it but I am so much happier to make that change over the granite. My husband is going to kill me though. :-( Do you think adding a backsplash would be better? Is the kitchen so bad that I cant even leave it that way for awhile while I figure it out? Thanks again for your posts - I think I can sleep tonight!

The paint doesn't look sickening in the pictures, but if there's a problem, I do think it's the paint. Even allowing for variation with a transmitted photo (my monitor is calibrated, which helps), I think the granite looks very good with the cabinets, and excellent with the hardware, and they're all just fine with the appliances.

I do think the strong contrast of the cool wall with the warm cabinets and counters is terrific. I don't think a cool gray would have the same pop, though. I think it needs to be a yellower or redder blue, rather than an ashier one. A periwinkle might work, depending on the one. Or a shade of ocean.

The wall color/paint is all wrong. It's the cheapest and easiest to fix. Maybe a neutral-cream/taupe or light silvery gray??? You can experiment with different color samples up on the wall by your cabs and granite, post a picture back here, and see what advice you get. People on this site always willing to help.

  • sfmomoxo

Oh, how I can relate!!!! I think the granite beautifully ties in the cabinets and the appliances. And, just as the others have said, the paint color needs to be changed. That is a simple (and inexpensive!) thing to fix. Take a deep breath. It's all going to be alright. I promise.

I love the match between countertop and hardware - very subtle.

Live with it for a while and then change the wall color if you want to.

Part of it is just seeing the changes.

The cabinets are beautiful and so is the granite, they are quite complementary. I agree, the paint color needs to be softened.

    Enjoy your new kitchen.

My first thought was the paint too, but even that doesn't look "bad". I agree with pp to live with it for awhile...paint can be changed at any time, so you don't need to rush into anything.

    Beautiful kitchen!

gorgeous wood cabinets! It is just fighting with the paint. And the granite is subdued (I like DM!) so the paint is trying to steal the show. whoever said that looked good is very confused or colorblind! I think a trip to a BM paint specialist is in order, take your door and sample of rock to them and you will have a perfect looking decor!!
    Congrats!

I like the wall color and like it with the cabinets, but it isn't going with the granite. There may be blue flecks, but they aren't enough to be drawn out and I think you've got too much orange/brown/red going on there to pull out small flecks of blue and make it work. It was a nice idea, but there probably is too much of the dominant colors demanding all your attention. The granite is good with the cabinets and hardware, so a paint change is the way to go.

I happened to have a couple of paint swatches for another room sitting here. If you're willing to go bold with color (there isn't a lot of wall space -- it's more like trim around the cabinets), consider some jewel tones -- the darker richer tones. I tried a hunter green, a garnet and a sapphire/navy blue. Reds will be tricky because of the orange-red in the granite, but green compliments it and the navy toned down the orange factor and pulled out the grey/blue in the granite. Your cabinets and floor are light enough to pull it off. Depends on the light and what else is in and around your kitchen though.

Cook DH his favorite dinner (or buy him some steaks and let him grill) and tell him not to sweat a gallon of paint. You just found a Labor Day project and it's cheaper than a movie, popcorn and drinks. (maybe you can rent a video for when you're done) ;-)

Your cabinets, granite, and hardware are fabulous together, and so well-coordinated that they (and you) deserve a wall color that works better. Since you asked, no it's not so bad that you can't live with it for a while, but I wouldn't recommend it. Life has a way of moving on, and you might never get back to "finishing" this project with the right wall paint. After investing so much money and time in such nice materials, I encourage you to top it off with a new paint job, maybe just consider this the base coat?)

Agree with many others who suggest a light gray-blue.

I hear you that your husband may not like the news that paint has to be changed. Of course, YOU will know best how to handle this, but one way is to just give him a two sentence report, short and simple: "I made a mistake on the wall color. We need to re-paint it for me to be happy."

Best wishes going forward to get it just right. Your kitchen is just lovely in all other respects!

  • susanka

lizbeth, I agree with the others that your cabs, appliances, granite and hardware are lovely together, and it's the paint that needs to be changed. New paint will make it perfect, and be a small project even if you have a large area to paint. Be sure to try out large areas with samples so you know you have just the right color. I just changed my backsplash for the third time (third time because the second installation was done very badly), and I would not recommend trying to find a stone or tile to harmonize with your other elements; it can be a nightmare. Paint will look great, be a very small job, and you'll find it much easier to carry out well than trying to put a backsplash in there. Your kitchen is gorgeous. Congratulations!

"far away it looks like a red slab of granite with a blue gray wall."

The blue of the wall is emphasizing the reddish of the granite, and vice versa. The solution is to go less blue - grayer blue or even a taupe/gray so the granite's other colors will show up more.

  • chicagoans

I love the beautiful cabinets and they look great with the granite and hardware. Before you worry about changing the paint, let it sit for awhile and see what you think once you have outlet covers, stuff on the counters, etc. You may find you don't notice it so much. If you do, upload your pictures to a paint supplier web site where you can virtually test out a few colors to see if you want to go lighter / grayer / warm tones, etc. That might help narrow down what samples you want to try.

I think we're focusing on the paint because we're not standing in the kitchen taking in the whole space in context with other spaces.

Luckily, paint is easy to change, and everything else looks gorgeous! Enjoy!

Ok, no one has mentioned this option yet. Maybe you could try putting a glaze/paint mixture over the existing paint that could help it blend a little more with the granite. Put some of your wall paint on some sample boards that you can set up on your counter tops. Try some different colors of paint/glaze mixtures over the base color. It can really change the look of the base paint when adding glaze. You can swirl it on with a mitt. Check out options for faux painting before deciding to totally scrap the color you have.

I'm not a Photoshop expert, however I did make a clumsy try at some other colors. Not colors I'm suggesting these were done super quick just to show how the look is completely different with different color.

I love your current paint color, but NOT with the other items there. ):

I absolutely love the color blue but agree that it's the paint that's throwing off the coordination. when I first looked at your pics I thought... "this girl is crazy! That's a beautiful combination". Anything with blue undertones will pull out the reddish in the stone since they are opposite on the color wheel. Check out BM Litchfield Gray or SW Lattice. Each a little different but I think both would work nicely.

Your cabinets are lovely and I think the hardware really looks nice with the tones of the granite.

The cabinets and the appliances are very "neutral" IMHO. The blue walls look great with the cabinets and appliances (I do love that shade of blue). The granite also looks great with the cabinets and appliances. Like others have said, I think it is the combo of the granite and the wall color that is the problem, and the paint is cheaper to change. It is not terrible if you just want to live with it for a while.

  • bayareafrancy

Granite + cabs + hardware = PERFECT!!!!! GORGEOUS!!!! Almost hard to believe you did it without having cab color with you!

Like everyone else, I think it's the paint. I love that blue color in general, and in a kitchen. If your stone really has blue in it, then it may work in real life. I can't see any blue in the stone in the photos.

How about a rust or cranberry sort of paint--something in the red family--to pick up that color in the stone. that would also be beautiful with the cab color, and the dark hardware. don't know if it would work with rest of home though.

aren't purple and orange opposite on the color wheel? If you could move that blue toward periwinkle or something else with a purple tinge (but not reddish purple) ...?

Or what about a yellow-going-on-mustard? with chocolate brown trim?

Just echoing the sentiment about the paint color, but if you really love it or something similar having a back splash so that the paint is never touching the granite may solve the problem. I painted my walls a gray with a little taupe with a plan to put in a blacksplash that is basically white but have not picked it out so had the back splash painted. I was surprised to find the paint color that looks great with my cabinets and the planned back splash looks bad right next to my counters - makes the gray counter look blue (though it also looked really nice with the swatches.)

I am confident that mine will look great again when we get the backsplash, so you are not the only one. Good luck.

No need for any more backsplash than you already have. If anything, you have 3 stars all competing for the limelight--the cupboards, the paint, and the countertop. Let the cupboards and the countertop win; downplay the paint. How about a deep yellow?

Thanks to all of the people who have commented as well as the kind people who gave me some photoshopped images. I must say the purple-ish one really grabbed me. Here is the thing - everyone who saw my pics posted on my faceboook say that when you see the kitchen in person that the paint looks nothing like it did in the pictures. They also say that the granite looks so much bluer in person. I have been told by more than 10 people in the last 2 days that I would be crazy to change any colors. And I know this is going to sound crazy, but I think when I posted the pics was when I started to panic. I think it looked so weird in the pics that I forgot to stand in the kitchen and actually look at the real thing. I know - at this point I have completely lost my mind! I cant understand how the pictures could do such an injustice to the actual room.

As for the posted who asked where my cabinets were made - they were from central IL - Kenrose Kitchens. they do travel and their delivery and install charges didn't come close to the some of the insane quotes I got form other places. They may be willing to travel to PA!!

Thanks again to everyone for your help and advice. I think I am going to just sit on this for a bit and stop looking at the pictures but rather stand in the kitchen and look at the real thing!
