Tiling Window Sill...help please! What do I do with window trim?

Because we want to use a high faucet (Moen Brantford), we have an issue with the wood will on our window behind the sink. This comes as no surprise, but we are now down to crunch time and we need to find a solution.

The backsplash is going in as we speak. I would like to tile the sill, but I'm not sure what to do about the trim? Has anyone done this? Can you post a picture please?

We removed the bottom wooden sill, but what should we do about the trim around the window?

My sink and window set-up are very similar to yours, right down to the window moulding abutting the sides of the cabinets. the only difference is that our sill is much deeper. We have a tall faucet as well. If you're thinking that you need to tile the sill because it will get wet, I can tell you that our sill does not get wet. Don't know why, but it just doesn't.

If you want to, you could trim or remove the part of the old sill that sticks out horizontally and use a different piece of painted wood trim applied on its side. By this I mean so its front is flush with the front edge of the moulding on the side of the windows. This is what we did. We have a piece of moulding about 2 inches high and maybe 5/8 inches thick. The side window moulding runs into it. So it's like a frame to the window, but a different profile from the side moulding. It looks like it belongs there. We needed a flat moulding to have room for our faucet.

We tiled up to the bottom of the cabinets, and the tile runs into (and stops at) the moulding on the sides and bottom of the window. It looks nice. Sorry I haven't learned how to post pics.

We just bought the shutters. Sunburst shutters, not cheap. Our entire first floor windows are the same white plantation shutters so we won't be painting them. That would completely ruin the shutters. It's been a dark, gloomy, rainy day so I've had the shutters closed when I took the pictures. Normally they are open but no light would be coming in on a day like today anyway. We can't have a family room without a single window. I'm not removing the window to avoid coming up with an idea of what to hang on the walls. When we moved furniture back into the house after remodel we did toy around with the idea of the 2 seater on the other wall but it looked even worse. The lamp is only temporary. Something we had before and it moved back into the room but I hate that lamp, it doesn't stand up straight so it will be replaced, hopefully with a table lamp. Beverly.....I agree about the area rug. Definitely looking for a bigger rug. Again, this is just what we had and reusing until I find something else. No suggestions on what to hang on the wall other than how everything existing is all completely wrong?

I wouldn't go with a plain fabric but something such as what Jodie White posted on the right - something with some texture or as kelleg69 suggested, a geometric pattern that is a tone on tone. You also really need to think long and hard about how you feel about colour. If you do like colour you could try a yellow/grey pattern or an aqua/grey or cherry red/grey (ok that might be a little out there). Do you have some ideas as to what colours you will have as an accent in towels, mats, etc.

I would put black between. To my eye, it would get busy with the white in between and if it were a single unit bay, it would be black in between as a general rule.

kate, again, hire a tile expert (not a contractor who also does 'tile'). You need a lot of waterproofing expertise around that window. it's an old house. problems occur w/old homes when you start to peel back the layers. Get an expert, even if it means more money. They tiled around that tub in the 20's w/no problem, so tiling around it again shouldn't be an issue. not sure why mercury made that comment. Back in the day they didn't use cement board, they used lath/mud mortar for waterproofing. Old school tile guys still use that method. They know how to tile around cast iron tubs. Higher window placement with a ledge for plants! as for tiling the apron, normally the tiler firs out the exterior, puts on cement board, and tiles on that. if you decide to do this, I would consider doing a solid tub deck surround (like in the first pic). tile/grout is not waterproof, even w/sealing. do doing all of these small tiles around the tub edge means more chance that water may get through. Have a solid piece around the top is neater and easier to keep clean. you don't have to do marble, you can do a solid white quartz. love the black accents. Or you can do something like a wainscot trim. depending on the shape of your bathtub, it may be best to get a new one.

OK, I'm trying. Had to use my phone, and the photo quality isn't great. I will link the album when the photos upload-- it's taking a while. Our solution is simple, but it looks fine to me. Please ignore the fact that the whites don't match. We're in the process of repainting, as the oil paint has yellowed. Also ignore thumb tack holes where I attach the Christmas lights each year!

Our horizontal piece at the base of the window was simply finished with a subtle router bit along the bottom edge to echo the cabinet trim, but you could use any moulding if you wanted something fancier.

Laizy- thank you so much. Those pictures definitely help. I wish my sill was nice and deep like yours!

anyone else have any ideas/suggestions?

We used to have a tiled sill. We replaced it with a quartzite sill. You can see the before and after pictures here. (also an added window sill in the remodel) Hope this is helpful.
