I think I'd go and purchase paint in a more muted color and let the machines be the "pop" in the room. Love those by the way. I am certain you can paint over the walls with a darker mustard color and then glaze it with a thinner glaze a small section at a time. I'd use a color close to the natural wall color and use the color washing technique. Lowe's even has kits for all this now! I was shocked to see them there. :)

You can't paint or glaze until it is dry anyway... so I think you need to relax and wait. On my monitor, it looks great, and a nice match for your fabrics, cabinets and machine. You won't get a true sense of the room until everything is fully dry, but I think it will be goreous when it is done.

Yes, do not paint or do anything until the texture is FULLY dry. Otherwise you will really have a mess on your hands. I would wait and see how it dries. You can always paint over it or glaze if you do not like the way it turns out once dry. I know moving the new machines away from the wall will not be fun but you really should not rush until it dries. All the elements look gorgeous!

summiebee~ Are you saying repaint the room, and then glaze on top of that? My only problem with "painting" the room is I've created massive "texture" on the walls with the joint compound, so no way to really evenly paint the walls other than brushing, and that would take FOREVER and wouldn't be nice and smooth like a rolled wall. Of course the glaze might cover up my bad paint application, right? What glaze would I do over the darker mustard walls? Brown? This is where I need some major help. I don't want to choose yet another bad color. LOL!

mildredpots~ Thank you for the kind words. You know, I wish in person it did look like my monitor photo. It is basically dry in there this afternoon, and it is brighter than ever. No offense to those who enjoy bright mexican colors, because in the right space I like them too. This is a bright mexican yellow!! Unfortunately in my house it looks so terribe! It doesn't even go with the travertine that is in there. I peeled back the paper on the floor and shuddered.... the two are just not compatible. This poor color is all wrong IRL. Even the workers are shaking their heads today when they see it. :o) LOL!

Any further suggestions? Will a brownish glaze help this at all? Anyone have a magic want to wave over this room?

I've done this tx before, but used an oyster color as the base. Then I washed with Ralph Lauren's smoke stain and tobacco stain. Here's that wall, which always receives compliments. (sorry for the munchkin in the photo.... I don't have a photo of just that wall).

Okay, I will wait another day to be sure the walls are completely dry. They look dry now, but maybe some below is still wet? I can do all of the areas except behind the machines at first. The machines will have to come out for the cabinet maker's pedestals to be placed under them anyway.

So when I know they are coming with the pedestals or installation, dh can pull them out of the way and I can glaze that section behind the machines then. We are just installing the machines now because I'm more than tired of the laundry mat. The cabinets actually won't be ready until mid-January, so we're going to use the machines without pedestals for now.

okay, anyone have thoughts on if the glaze pictured above would work on this color? Oh.... why did I choose this color? I thought I was being brave and it was going to turn out great. Yikes......

Put some fans in the room to dry out the walls a bit faster ..... THEN get some of the darker glaze and go over the walls.

So sorry you're having paint troubles, Totallyblessed! Can you do a mock-up of this color with the RL stain on it to see what it would look like before you start on the walls? I think it would work okay for you, but with a mock-up you'd be more sure.

Good idea. I went to HD this evening and bought the DARKEST RL stain (tobacco). I did a bit of the joint compound on poster board yesterday "just in case". Of course it wasn't dry yesterday, so didn't help me with final outcome then, but I had a feeling after seeing it mixed up that I might not LOVE the color. LOL!

It made me feel a smidge better that one of the head HD guys was there (inventory tonight). He recommended RL's stains without me mentioning them first. And he knew the same steps to do that I did on the walls in my other home. So.... .let's hope he's steered me in the right direction.

It cracks me up how worried I get about these things. DH reminded me that he has a sprayer for paint (duh, I just spent over $1,000 on that machine 2 weeks ago for him!!) and if it looks awful he will spray it all whatever color I want. Bless his heart.

I'm going to go see how this tobacco stain works out on the sample. Wish me luck! ;o)

I immediately agreed with Summie's suggestion. But if you want to fool around with the other glaze first, it's not going to be something you can't paint over if you need to. Personally, I would find a nice neutral paint shade, maybe something just a shade or two lighter than those pretty cabinets, and have the DH spray the walls. I textured my hall bath pretty heavily with joint compound too, had never done it before, then, painted with a roller for rough surfaces. It came out very well.

You just need a roller for rough surfaces. Like ceiling rollers for textured surfaces. I had done something like this in my old house. Like othrs said. Let it dry well first.

Well, I sealed the walls tonight since they were dry (and also on the joint compound bucket "directions" enough time had elapsed). The sealer is supposed to dry for mimimum 4 hours.

I finished about 8pm tonight, so about 7am tomorrow I'm going to go in to wash the walls and hope it all looks good when I'm done.

If not, I'm loving the paler green wall idea for the room. Why didn't I think of doing green walls to begin with? Besides red, green is my favorite color.

See, it just shouldn't be legal for me to go into a paint store of any kind. I should have to go thru my GW friends who call my order in for me after seeing my photos. I'm sure I'd have a much easier time if I went that route. :o) LOL!

Thanks so much for your advice and input. I will give a report back tomorrow on how it turns out, and I'll share a photo whether it's ugly or not. Promise! :O)

Totallyblessed, your munchkin is adorable, and that wall he's sitting in front of is just lovely. I'm crossing my fingers for you. You know, it's just paint and there's plenty more where that came from. Sometimes it takes a few tries to get things just right. And don't kid yourself, that's true for the best decorators out there, too.

Plus, when we're stepping out of the box as you are with this room, there is often a fine line between major triumph and sheer catastrophy. I think every time I've done it right there has been that moment of panic where I was suddenly terrified that it wouldn't work out. What I'm trying to say is don't be so hard on yourself. This is par for the course for those of us who venture to decorate in special and unique ways.

I don't have to cross my fingers. I know you'll work it out and when you're done it will be just gorgeous. :-)

OK, now after reading all this, I really want to see how your room turned out! Please come back & post pics. I did a textured wall in my old sunroom & it came out great. I used white faux plaster, painted it, then went back & glazed on top of that. It was a medium gold shade, turned out just like I had hoped. I have some old pics if you need to see them.

Please let us know how it turned out! Looks like it's going to be a stunning laundryroom.

I have not washed the walls yet with the stain. Just as I was headed out to do that this morning, the delivery men called for directions. They were delivering from the next time zone (I'm on the time zone border) so they were coming extra early. I knew the walls would just be all wet by the time they got here, so I've waited.

The machines were delivered, and lined up side by side (4 all together) my tile man joked that it looks like I have a shiny red corvette in there. :o) Leave it to a man...

After seeing them in the space, I'm wishing I had done stackables. I can't stack them now because I have plugs and faucets across the walls and those would show. They actually show right now anyway, because my cabinetman will build the pedestal they are going to sit on.

Well, the shiny red and the bright mexican yellow in there are just UGLY together. And I'm trying not to bawl my eyes out because I spent so much money on those machines. After they were all in the room, I just wanted to put them back on that truck. :o(

I'm sure it will be fine once I fix the walls, right? I LOVED the machines in the ugly gray box store, so I'll love them when I fix my walls, right?

Georgiagal~ I'd love to see photos! Your current house is one of my fav's, so I'd love to see what you did in your previous sunroom. Are you saying you didn't tint your faux plaster, it was just white. Then you glazed a yellow color? Any photos and advice you can share would be soooo appreciated.

Next time we build or buy a new home, I'm finding a designer to do all of this. I have a vision, but lack the skills to pull it together. And in the end, I think it would be cheaper to pay a designer than keep testing out failed paint colors... LOL!

Hang in there. Give it time. I have always found that making a huge paint color change tends to be so shocking at first that you just don't think you like it. Often it's not as bad as we first thought. I'm sure it will look wonderful when it's all put together :)

Four machines? Like as in you have more than one set? Oh, my friend would die! She has 5 kids and she says she at least needs a much larger washer if not an extra! LOL

Why do you stink at picking colors? Same reason as the rest of us: because the lighting of the room you put the color in changes it tremendously, and that is dependent on the amount of light. . . and the texture, color of the paint you pick. That is why do so many people suggest painting a small section of the actual room rather than relying on small sample. You just can't guess! It isn't you - don't lose faith!!

Thanks so much for checking in, and your sweet words. I did shed a few tears yesterday when I was in that room and no one was around. I wonder why it feels so discouraging when the wall color turns out so hideous?! ;o~

Anyway, yesterday I spent the entire afternoon and evening rolling the RL stain on, letting it sit a bit, and then washing it off with circular motions. I thought my arms would fall off, and that was without doing the big wall that runs the length of the room where the machines sit. LOL!

I must admit, it does look so much better. It's almost pretty! Not sure it's a great match with my travertine floor. If I put stained trim and crown in there it might look better?!? I also think a bit darker color on the ceiling than what i have would help. I have a cream color(Porter Paint's Indian Ivory) that is so gorgeous on it's own, but too pale for the darkish walls.

Anyway, I have been so busy today with a gazillion trades here, drop in "guests" that wanted tours, and our wedding anniversary where we were too busy to even get away for lunch together! But I will take a photo of the completed walls tomorrow morning and will share tomorrow sometime, as soon as I can find a minute to get on line.

So... stay tuned until tomorrow. I hope you all like it better... I surely do! I can't say I totally love it, but I like it much better!

Hi, Totally, I see you've already gotten started on finishing your room, so you may not need this after all, but here's the plaster finish I did in my old sunroom.This was a white faux plaster that I used, then painted with regular paint, then used a darker glaze over that to highlight some areas. I did a wash also & not too heavy. The 2 colors I used were from the old SW fandeck & the base was Dromedary Camel, washed over with Florentine Brass. Anyway, thought you might want to see it just in case you needed to change it later. I did a raised stencil effect too, just using a plain fleur de lis stencil.

I'm glad it's turning out better for you...I know how it is to be disappointed in something you've worked on! The 2nd pic is most accurate colorwise.

Georgiagal, that's beautiful! I'm glad to finally see someone who did the raised plaster stencils. It looks great. Did you do those with tinted plaster? Or paint them when they were dry? How easy/hard were they to do?

I think that your room looks great. I love the color. I did a joint compound texture in my boy's bathroom.

I have to know where you got your curtains/drapes? You posted a picture of your washing machine, cabinet door and the drapes, which I am assuming is a curtain? I love the colors and would love to use them in my dining room.

Also, I bought the same washing machine and dryer but in white in July and LOVE them. I have three boys and I LOVE my machines.

Thank you, Oceana...it was really surprisingly easy to do. That was my first time using faux plaster like that & I was very pleased with how it turned out. Moved & left it behind, but the new owner sure did love it.

I used a faux plaster product (don't remember the name right now), but ordered it online. It was all white when it was applied. I used a regular stencil for the raised part, glazed the walls & went back with a little stencil brush & added the darker glaze to the raised stencil. Very easy! I might like to to it again sometime.

georgiagal - I love your sunroom! Are those columns antique? Neat touch!

totallyblessed - Without even seeing the finished product, I just have to say that your laundry room is the fanciest I have seen yet! I know that once you get everything in place that it will be gorgeous! :)

Can't wait to see the new pics...That's going to be some laundry room. I am so envious of your double washer/dryers. With three boys, it seems my laundry is constant, and if I don't do a few loads each day, it gets so backed up! I have a front loader and love it - but it does take longer to do a load it seems than my old top loader. So if I had two - wow, what a great idea. I don't have enough room for that many appliances - maybe the next house!

I can imagine your arms are very tired from that glazing - how high are your ceilings? That extra few feet of height really add on the square footage to cover!

lauraa~ That "panel" for fabric in my laundry room is actually fabric I borrowed from a fabric store in Chattanooga. I had to check it out and return within a week. It's gorgeous fabric. I'd be happy to share the name and phone of the store if you'd like to see about getting a sample. I'm not sure where you live. If it's a look you like, I don't think you'd be disappointed in this fabric at all. It's silk, has gorgeous body to it, nice and thick and beautiful colors. I love it. Unfortunately now I'm not sure it will work with my "dirty" old walls. I may have to go with the toile. I'll toy with the fabrics again after we get closer to move in and things slow down a bit from the Holiday pace of life. :o) Let me know if you want that store name. :o)

Caroleoh~ I know exactly what you mean about laundry backing up and it being difficult to get it all done. I too have laundry going all the time at my CA house. It's much smaller, and the laundry room is tiny! I have a maytag frontloader there, and each load seems to take forever and a day. LOL! I am really pinching myself that I am finally going to have 2 sets of machines. Honestly, if I had been thinking more clearly, I would have put in 3 sets and stacked them. ON days I want to do bedding, towels it would be so handy. Oh well. I am loving having 2 sets and certainly won't complain. 5 kids plus 2 adults makes for a LOT of dirty laundry. Good thing I enjoy doing laundry. LOL!

Okay, I finally found a minute to share a few photos with you. It has been another whirlwind here at our build, which I'm not complaining about. The lights are not installed on the 2nd floor yet, or I'd show you dd#1's pink marble shower that was installed today. My gosh... it's absolutely gorgeous. Even the worker men are saying it's the sweetest girls' shower they've ever seen. Another day.... when there's light.

Meanwhile, I went in tonight and took a few photos to share with you. The lights are a bit blinding in there. I'm changing the recessed lights to a dimmer switch.... it's really bright in there! Good for days of scrubbing stains, but otherwise hard on the eyes with those shiny machines. LOL. :o)

Okay, here is a shot of the "machine" wall. There are windows that flank either end of the machines. The cabinetmaker is building pedestals 18 inches tall that these machines will sit on eventually. So excuse the staggered mess they are currently in. I'm just glad they are functioning since we are in our RV behind the house!

Anyhoo, I can't reach the area behind the machines without standing on them...... eeeks. So... I did not glaze the wall area behind the machines. We will be pulling these to the center of the room when the cabinetry is installed, so I will have dh move them a few days before installation so I can finish that wall up then. I know the original color doesn't look bad in these photos, but trust me when I tell you it was a bit more yellow than a giant school bus..... it was not attractive in that room! The glaze gave it a bit of a "dirty" look, which is not what I had intended originally, but I'll work with it for now. It does look more "old world" now, and I like that look, so I'm fine with my "fix". I prefer the new look to the old, that's for sure. LOL!

I've left the paper covering my travertine for now, as I really want to paint the ceiling a darker color in that room. The pale cream is just not working with my darker glazed walls. What kind of monster am I creating? LOL!

Here is a close up of the wall, which is actually truer to the real color/look. I know the full shot of the room looks cheap and tacky, but it really does look better IRL. I promise. :O)

I don't think this room will stay this color, but I have so many other areas to concentrate on that it will probably stay this way for some time. And now I can enjoy my room as I had originally hoped to, without cringing each time I walk that direction. :O) Thanks so much!

Wow TB, it looks 100% better! I don't know about the floor as you have it covered up now, but it certainly goes well with your red machines.

When you said four machines, I was assuming you meant the two old and the two new. But wow, you really do have four. I don't envy you needing four, but if you do need the extra I'm sure glad you have them. Looking back I can see that would have been really wonderful at times, especially when my little ones were in diapers (we didn't have pampers in those days and I doubt I would use them if we had them now, but that's another subject).

I have to laugh at your wall that isn't painted over the machines -- excuse me please. My whole life is like that as there is just me, no we, and it's often impossible for me to move things. I would never have finished my kitchen floor had my son not come over to help me with the oven and refrigerator. Plus, in every home there are always a couple of pieces that two people can't move. In my last home the wall behind my ginormus armoire was never fully painted. I settled for as far back behind it as I could reach without getting paint on it. When I moved out the wall was finally painted one solid color. I am in a perpetual state of ticked off that I can't move my bed, and as I recall, the painting is not complete behind it currently. Even my son and I together can't budge it.

Anyhoo, ya done good! You should be feeling loads better, and it's quite pretty. I don't think it looks dirty.

I can't wait to see your daughter's shower. Pink marble -- ooolala! When will you be fully moved in to the house? What a time of the year to be going through all of this!

Looks very nice. I really didn't think it looked that bad before, but now seeing the bare wall against the glazed one, it does look more subdued and less harsh with the red washer/dryers.

I think your cabinets are going to look wonderful in there. I agree the silk may not work since they're so fancy with the glazed walls, but you never know. Maybe as a roman shade or simple valance, it will be perfect. I do love toile, so either way, it's going to be gorgeous.

Pink marble - can't wait to see those pictures. I'd love pink marble in my bath!

I always enjoy your posts. :O) You know, I am like you. I get so irritated that I am not strong enough to rearrange rooms without dh's help (and of course, often when I want to do it he is not around, or is too busy to help me just then). LUckily my 12 yr old son is getting strong enough to help me with smaller things. :O) Yep, I love being a girl, and dh always says I'm the most feminine one he knows. LOL! Just hate being a "wimp" and not being able to move things on my own. Maybe I should take up weight lifting? :o) LOL!

I tried to sneak into the upstairs baths to take photos of the 2 showers, but they are in there grouting, and as the baths are smallish anyway, there's no room for me to squeeze in with them. :o) I will take photos as soon as I can and will share. I never thought we'd do a PINK shower.... we were planning neutrals everywhere. But goodness, it's adorable!!

Hope that helps. There is a lady named Gwen who owns the store with her son. I can not remember the name of the man. Maybe Mark? Can't believe I already forgot. Anyway, they are really nice. Some fabrics they can cut samples of. They also have some panels which you can order that are premade. This fabric was a "by the yard" fabric that you could have custom made into drapery/etc.
