Need a quick fix for a bare spot

OK, my first attempt at annuals gardening has not gone so well. It pains me to say so, because I'm pretty good with perennials. For now, though, I'm allowed to plant only annuals in the condo where I'm living.

What can I pop in the ground now that will look good soon and maybe last into early October? A vine would be ideal. The spot that needs help gets full sun and a lot of heat from the brick exterior. The soil is compacted clay that I just began to amend this spring. I could stick something in a container to avoid the bad soil, but I'd still like a plant that has a lot of height.
