Have you used these online fabric stores?

I'm ready to buy some fabric and have been looking for the best prices. I found this website www.plus20design.com and they price at wholesale plus 20% which is lower than most other fabric sites. No mention of shipping costs. Has anyone used them or heard anything about them?

The next best site was www.myfabricconnection.com and they were around wholesale plus 25% for the fabrics I am interested in. Free shipping w/orders over $200. Any reviews/experiences with this site?

I've not ever ordered fabric on line as I'm a touchy-feely person and want to see it in person, feel the weight, stretch it out, play with it against other fabrics, trims and such...full fabric immersion shopping.

I haven't ordered from either of these but did have some bad experiences with other, discounted fabric sites. I wasted several weeks ordering and receiving samples, only to find out that they didn't actually have the fabric. Apparently they wait until they get an order, and then they see if they can get it. So I'd get someone on the phone and ask some pointed questions.

Paint store consultants can work out sometimes, sometimes not so much. I know several really good independent consultants who have managed to work out decent deals with paint stores. One thing to keep in mind is they work for the paint store and even if they say the consultations are free, in essence they aren't. Everyone who gets a check from the store is expected to sell paint. The free consultation is designed to sell you paint first, help you with color second. Training and basic color knowledge is also an issue with in-store consultants. Many of them only know what they know from the free seminars and collateral provided by the brand the store carries - support materials to help staff sell paint. Or they're interior designers/decorators who are working at a paint store selling paint - which is very different from an architectural color consultant. It is not unusual for paint store color consultants to have more training on how to sell and upsell product than color design. Even though they may sell thousands of dollars for the store the consultants are usually paid minimum wage or close to it. With Devine I was appalled to learn that the consultants have to pay for Devine color training, all the selling tools and collateral and then they only get like $100 of the $250 - but don't quote me on any of that. It's been awhile since I've seen their package. At first I was gobsmacked that's how Devine worked but after thinking about it, I guess it's no different than Amway, Avon, or Pampered Chef, Longaberger Baskets, etc. People have to invest to rep those products too so I guess it's not all that shocking. Any way.... not sure any of that helps or is even relevant. But it's another pov on the whole shebang.

I would honestly stay away from blankets. I received 13 of them when I had my first. Maybe that's not common but that was my experience! I won't buy them as gifts. Lots of good ideas above. I'll add I think it's nice to also get a small woven type basket and add in Triple Paste (hands down the best diaper cream ever), Little Remedies Infant Tylenol (or any dye free kind), gas drops, teething gel, that type of thing. Maybe add a book, rattle/small toy/teething toy. I also have one of these hooks and I use it on the stroller and grocery cart for various things. Holds 65lbs. if I'm remembering right. It's very sturdy. And awesome. stroller hook

Annie, I've done all that at the Pacific Design Center here in LA. The major to-the-trade showrooms there have no problem with mere mortals walking around! I photograph what I'm interested in and then order my own samples on line. I've picked my fabrics, now I'm price shopping.

Maureen, even the main showrooms don't have any of their own fabrics! It took about 3 months to get a Lee Joffa fabric that was ordered directly from them. None of these companies keep large inventories of individual fabrics. If you happen to order as they ran out of yardage, then you have to wait months till the next run is manufactured.

I chose to order a Robert Allen upholstery fabric from the Robert Allen website. I had samples sent to me to experiment with. In the case of my fabric, you could get samples from Joanne or directly from Robert Allen. The website direct price was better than any I found elsewhere, including Joanne with coupons and all the other fabric selling site.

I recently used myfabricconnection and was very pleased. I wanted to order a Duralee fabric but it was discontinued. I tried two other websites but they emailed me to say it was discontinued and they could not ship. Myfabricconnection not only got me my order but John continued to email me with updates. WOW, no one does that today. Price was competitive but I would have paid any price as I had to have that specific fabric.
