I would double mat with the inside mat picking up the green in the prints, outside mat a softer beigey- slightly greenish mat. Frame - wood - darker a little lighter than your furniture, but more on the not formal side. If you go to a frame shop, they will have many, many choices. Ask for some samples of the matting to bring home. as well as the frame sample, to look at them in your own lighting. Definitely frame them all the same.

I would definitely have some gold in the frames, not just dark wood, to set them off from the wall color (which by the way is very attractive), and a soft, olive green color for matting would be very nice to frame the light background of the prints. The matting should not be too narrow and you want the frames to be large enough to make a statement on the wall.

I wouldn't place the fourth print in the adjoining room. Either place all of them together or put the fourth print in a room where it won't be seen at all with the other prints.

Hi Creek! Your prints are very nice. Once framed, they will really be stunning. I agree w/Mago completely about the double mat, & having the inside mat a soft, olive green w/the top mat a soft beige or an off-white that's not too bright. I agree w/Ingrid also, in that I wouldn't place one of them in the adjoining room. It would look fine to place 3 on one wall & 1 on another wall in the same room though, imo.
The person I go to for framing says to always let the art tell you what to do in terms of mat & frame, not the room it will be in! He says if there are 3 shades of brown in the print for example, go w/the middle tone for the mat instead of trying to match your wall color. I think the green inside mat is a good idea, not because of your wall color, but because each print has some green foliage. Using my framer's tip, he would choose a green that is not the darkest featured nor the lightest, but would use a green that is in between the two tones. When you're shopping for mats you may want to experiment w/this tip & see if it works for you. Good luck w/your art project!

Thanks for your ideas and opinions, and especially the matting tip! I was leaning towards green as well. I'm concerned if I mat in an off-white that it will look funny with my white-white trim. Please dispel my fears, as I think you're right about the off white.

I'm also curious why you both think I should not put a fourth print in the next room? I don't *have* to... I actually have 40+ of these prints and can use as many or as few as I like. I was just thinking it might be nice to fill that space and tie the rooms together. Is there a rule about this? (I'm not arguing with you as you both may be absolutely correct.)

We have 2 of those prints and we triple matted them. The outer mat is in a sage green, the 2nd mat is in a mustard gold, and the thinner inner mat is in a deep red.

The top print is hung in a horizontal position, but could go vertical as well.

I wouldn't worry about the white trim. Beautifully framing the prints with the right shades of mats will not contrast with the trim. You don't want to match the art to the trim.
How lucky for you to have 40 prints from which to choose! If you want to use them in the other room - consider another grouping. I didn't say before, but I do not care for the lone print in the other room. But another grouping would tell a story and not look like you had one leftover.
Since you have so many prints, make sure your framer keeps a good record of the materials you are using, as well as the exact size of the mats. That way, a good framer will be able to match the framing at a later date. It took me over a year to frame multiple prints the same due to the cost of framing so many.

Beautiful Audubon's! If you have 40 to choose from, I might look at the three or four that best fit together (like monablairs,) and that go with your surroundings. The middle blue print sticks out like a sore thumb, to me. :)

I have a couple of really old prints in my sons closet that have yet to be framed. I cannot remember where they came from, but they were someplace in the family. I should really look into getting them framed, but don't have a clue as to where to hang them. Perhaps my bedroom that needs some personality?

Creek, I'm w/Mago again regarding the trim, & my framer would be too. He gets really impatient w/me when I say, "This will be in a room with..." He doesn't care! It's all about the art, he says. I also agree w/Mago's thought that using 1 print in the adjacent room would give the impression that you had 1 left over and it feels disjointed to me. Imho, rather than another group of these bird prints next door, I'd like to see something of the same ilk style-wise, but different subject matter. Maybe botanicals or even architectural renderings of old buildings would offer some interesting contrast but would be in keeping with the feel of the vintage bird prints. You may get tired of seeing nothing but birds everywhere you look, even though they are really neat prints!

I'm personally trying to introduce other subject matter to "cleanse the palate" from my botanicals, birds & butterflies. I'm getting a print of old houses reframed right now, & I have a print featuring the steeples of churches in my home town that I love. They seem to work well w/the nature themes of the other art to me, but offer a contrast that is refreshing.

Also, Mago's point that framing is not an inexpensive service is one to keep in mind. Take it easy & add to your collection gradually.

Thanks for your explanations on the "extra" print. I have a few botanicals on another wall in that room that I might move there instead. I've been thinking of getting more substantial drapery for that room anyway that would be in the way of where they are now.

I also had to chuckle at the comment about seeing birds everywhere. It seems I had a similar love of florals a while back and now I feel like the flower lady! I moved to birds because it satisfies my love of pretty and colorful nature things but hopefully is a little less fru-fru.

This is very interesting to me! I have the same book of prints and the same wall color,how weird is that. I was looking to do a grouping as well, I had six picked out. I am really having a heck of a time finding mats and framesto fit,are you having it done custom? I'll be watching to see what you come up with,keep us posted!

I have a bird print that is done in very vivid blues and greens w/ some red. It has an off white mat and the frame is a simple wooden frame that has a gold metallic finish to it. I must say though that I do prefer nice ornate gold frames w/ a subtly colored mat to bring out the colors in the print.

It is amazing how transformed the most mundane, inexpensive print or keepsake becomes when expertly framed.

Lovely prints! You can send them to me. What I do is group all together--either all four in a row or two above and two below. Also put closer to one another so that they are all connected to one another. As for matting, I'd choose to do a green inner matte that matches to the tree branches and then an outer matte of white. Then I'd do some simple black frames (not too thick) as I'd probably want to do the two rows above and below.

When I framed my botonicals, I kept my costs down by puchasing custom mattes through pictureframes.com, put putting in standard sized frames which I bought at Aaron Bros and Michaels. There is lots of useful infomation on their website which can help you determine how to do this.
