What medium did you use? Oils, acrylics or water color? The type of medium you used would determine whether or not you would use a mat.

It is linseed oil. I know one usually does not use mats with such a medium but I often do and without glass.

I would hang it unframed for impact! :)

It stands so well on it's own symmetry that you could easily leave it unframed, as teacats suggested, for the greatest impact. I'm afraid a frame might detract from the great balance of the piece. If you were to frame it, I could visualize it with something clean-lined, sleek and in a color tone that is already used in the painting itself.

The canvas is small and also is flat. Not stretched over a deep board.

It looks like a relatively simple frame with an extra flat border in the middle...all painted antiqued gold. This frame comes from a store in oxford, ms. that I've seen many paintings like yours, framed this way and look incredible. Maybe you could print out the photo and see if a frame shop could duplicate it. It doesn't look complicated at all. I hope you find a good frame!

I'd like to see it in a four inch wide weathered wood frame. I've seen some at Michaels. They're almost a soft taupe color and rustic. The painting calls for that. No fluting or fussiness. Just clean flat taupe frame

If you like the unframed look like Newdawn's but your canvas isn't finished on the edges, you can put it in a float mount frame. They are actually pretty easy to make yourself. You buy corner molding from Home Depot or Lowes and use a miter box to cut the corners. Make the frame about 1/4" too big all around, paint it and mount the canvass in the center so it looks like it is floating in the frame. One flat side of the molding is against the wall and the other flat side is perpendicular to the wall. If the frame is very big or the artwork heavy you can nail the frame to a piece of 1/4 plywood for support. I've done this on large pieces that I couldn't afford to buy a frame for.

I tried to find a picture in google, but no luck. I may not have the right name for this technique.
