How would you group these 3 pieces...

... or would you not at all.

This photo shows how they were hung, badly, before the room was recently repainted to Providence Olive (this was a wallpapered accent wall.)

I think the two gilt whatchamacallits were too far away from the picture and the spacing needs to be tighter, but should they be staggered like that again? Directly centered over each other? Either way, is there a rule of thumb for spacing, e.g., if they're centered, then should the center line be a certain distance, percentage-wise, away from the vertical edge of the frame? Should the top of the vase on the top shelf and the lowest edge of the lower shelf extend above/below the horizontal edges of the frame, or stay within that boundary?

Or do these 3 items just look like crap together? It's OK, I can take it. LOL.

I have blocked it out on the floor a thousand times and think I get it settled, but come time to drive the nails, I panic.

The two gilt whatchamacallits are traditional/formal and don't blend well with the more modern picture. And the items sitting on them seem odd.

I would not use them with that picture.

I like the two gilt shelves with the picture. A good contrast. But I think you need something else on the shelves. Not sure what though. Small red vase with fresh flowers on one perhaps to mimic the pic and a modern piece of ceramic on the other? They are different styles so why not play up that difference? Yes, I would move the shelves closer together.

Don't panic. Anything you do decor-wise can be undone if you don't like it. Bare walls can be calming. But you are no where near the bare wall stage. ;-)

That's so funny. I have never heard of that, but I think I might need to make an investment in it.. I have been contemplating the whole window seat argument and think maybe I SHOULD start looking into it and start considering what i would want. I may end up doing the window seats sooner than later, so my question is this.. what fabric/color would you recommend for those seats? I still don't know what wall color i am going to use.. I would love to use BM Desert Tan But not sure I can since this is part of a great room and not sure it will coordinate with my kitchen (haven't decided yet but will most likely do something in the Taupey family for the kitchen. My sectional is a dark brown leather but soon we will be replacing that with a micro-fiber couch b/c despite what the saleswoman told us 3 years ago when purchasing this couch, Leather does not work well with children (at least ours). We just purchased these pillows from RH which I Love in the Silver Sage family: So what do you think? color suggesitons for wall and built-in window seats????

How would you mount and frame this piece?

If you like the unframed look like Newdawn's but your canvas isn't finished on the edges, you can put it in a float mount frame. They are actually pretty easy to make yourself. You buy corner molding from Home Depot or Lowes and use a miter box to cut the corners. Make the frame about 1/4" too big all around, paint it and mount the canvass in the center so it looks like it is floating in the frame. One flat side of the molding is against the wall and the other flat side is perpendicular to the wall. If the frame is very big or the artwork heavy you can nail the frame to a piece of 1/4 plywood for support. I've done this on large pieces that I couldn't afford to buy a frame for. I tried to find a picture in google, but no luck. I may not have the right name for this technique.

A structural engineer could design a floor system that is only 8" thick. Some possibilities are: a flat plate slab floor, a metal deck and concrete composite floor, or light weight steel. Or a 10" thick floor with 1 3/4 x 7 1/4 LVL's and a 7'-10 ceiling height. But if you check the zoning ordinance I suspect you will find a 2 1/2 story limit unless you are in a multi-family zone but then the building height would probably be higher.

Wow...are you sure a question like that doesn't require a site visit? Seriously, if you don't need coverings for practical reasons, don't bother as the room is beautiful. if those are single glazing, you might wish to have roller blinds fitted against the window and hidden by trim work painted to match the window trim. You would lose a few inches at the top but a talented trim carpenter could make them look almost like a part of the window trim. I could see custom made radiator covers that would mimic the wainscoting would turn those obstructions into a desirable feature. For the top use the same profile and dimensions, at the same height, as the window sills. Columns on the ends and probably three panels of approximately same proportions as the existing ones across the front of the radiators would work well. Do some research on radiator cover design as you need to have good air flow coming in from the bottom and exiting at the top and a properly designed cover will actually help, not hinder heat distribution from the radiators. Despite the term, more heat comes from convection than radiation and channeled air flow will increase the heat transferred to the room. Thanks, guys. When I look at this image it seems they're all different color gilt when in fact the gilt on the frame and the two shelves all matches exactly. Color-wise, it all ties together better than it appears, the white vases, the gold. Oh well.

I'm not a knick-knack person but wanted to display these Belleek pieces. I'm Irish, they're family gifts, and I have something Celtic in every room. I've no objection to ditching the gilt shelves entirely, but I do kind of like the painting, and I also would like somewhere to display the vases. The room in question has photos posted near the end of another thread. I was going to hang this grouping over the sofa but now maybe not.

I'm not usually the type to agonize over these kinds of things, but I want to try and get it right the first time, otherwise it'll still be there in its half-assed form five years later, a la that too-widely-spaced grouping up above. LOL.

Here is your sofa area. Even grouped together, that picture and those small gold shelves are not large enough to place above the sofa. You need something larger and visually stronger over the sofa. You want to cover 2/3 to 3/4 of the width above the sofa. That's why you hear the term "sofa sized painting."

That grouping is more appropriate for a wall area that is maybe 36 inches wide.

I agree the pieces are too small for the wall. Also while individually they are nice, I dont like them grouped together.
