I like them. Their heights and shapes are complimentary. Where are you going to put them?

I think they're nice enough, but they're not really accenting anything. If your color scheme is greys, browns and soft greens, I think a short turn on the color wheel would be more effective--like golds, bronzes, terracotta and a not-loud orange.

I think they look just fine - I like combining pottery in similar but not identical forms and colors - but I would relax the group a bit...pull them out of the corner just an inch or two, and give the two smaller ones a bit more room around them.

There's another way you might go there...if you wanted that cabinet to function as a window seat, you might like to add a cushion in a good upholstery fabric, put a fat bolster against the wall, and move the largest jug to the floor between the left edge of the cabinet and the right edge of the firebox, and put the other two on the mantel shelf above it, with a small bowl in the same color family to make three elements.

Another thing I see in your photo...try moving your candlestick and hurricane just far enough to the left that it continues the vertical line of the pilaster. The idea is to give the sense that whatever is on the mantel shelf is supported by the structure of the pilaster. Things that are placed out beyond that vertical member tend to look as though they are drifting off the edge.

I do like the largest one to sit alone in the corner -- perhaps add dark wood sticks, branches or twigs?

Of course -- there is electricity there -- how about adding a dark brown lamp (hid the cords under or behind books) to that area?

I like them, but, WOW!!!, that spot is crying out to be a window seat! It even has a lovely view!!!!

I agree on making that spot a window seat. If you want to make that window a focal spot in the room, try a contrasting color in the fabrics or objects, too.

WE are planning on having cushions made for the window seats.. down the road... we have two small children and there is a good drop from the window to the ground there so i am nervous about encouraging them to sit there for now.. The windows are locked, but i just get nervous that they will figure out how to open and well. the rest you get..

As for putting the taller vase on the floor.. I thought about that, but again this is our family room and I am afraid it will get knocked over by one of the girls or our yellow lab.. This is a picture of the whole room from the kitchen.. I have no other place to "put" things as the wall adjacent to the cabs on the left side (if looking at the mantle is french doors that lead into the playroom (eventually LR) and the other wall adjacent is all windows where part of our sectional rests.. Any ideas with this info? I am trying to dress it up (we will be painting within the next couple of months) without over or under doing it..

Yes, I take your point about your little ones and the four-footed members of the family.

So now what I want you to do is move those candlesticks in to sit over the pilasters (nag, nag, nag!) and add natural bamboo or soft fabric roman shades just a hair wider than the window frames and hung from the top of the wall. Put the cleat high up so that your children can't get to the cords, and I think you'll finish the space nicely.

If you don't already have things to hang on the walls, you might choose some favorite photos of your family members, crop them so that the faces are the bulk of the image, blow them up in black and white or sepia to 9 X 12, put them in stock mats and thin black frames that are 18 X 22 (not expensive at Ben Franklin or some such place), and hang a group over your sectional. Then hang a generous vertical mirror between your door on the left and the corner to reflect the window opposite it.

Getting back to the original question: I love those vases, individually and together, and IMO they look very good as you have placed them. I remember the days when I had toddlers and a dog. You're doing a great job with your room, despite the obstacles!

A couple of things I would do (since you asked!) Put up window treatments, add crown moulding and move the hurricane lamps on the mantle in about an inch, or two.
And if you do none of these things, you still have a pretty room.

I have young children too, and use "earthquake putty" or "museum putty" on the bottom of anything I think there's even a chance of my kids knocking over. Works like a charm & significantly reduces the chance of breakage :-)

If you're looking for shades ... woven wood, bamboo, whatever ... get cordless ... and do an inside mount. You have beautiful casing.

I have been contemplating the whole window seat argument and think maybe I SHOULD start looking into it and start considering what i would want. I may end up doing the window seats sooner than later, so my question is this.. what fabric/color would you recommend for those seats? I still don't know what wall color i am going to use.. I would love to use BM Desert Tan

But not sure I can since this is part of a great room and not sure it will coordinate with my kitchen (haven't decided yet but will most likely do something in the Taupey family for the kitchen.

My sectional is a dark brown leather but soon we will be replacing that with a micro-fiber couch b/c despite what the saleswoman told us 3 years ago when purchasing this couch, Leather does not work well with children (at least ours).
