Enough is Enough

Their needs to be support group for when you have to many dahlias!!!!!! I keep collecting more more more. Do the kids need room to play in the yard? they can go to the park can't they? How about the dogs, do they need a place to go potty? How many do you all have? I'm too ashamed to say. Cindy

Hi Cindy-

I am on the same page. I decided to turn one of my last veggie gardens into another Dahlia cutting bed.

I just love them and cannot get enough of them.

I have about 300 of them and that is after I have given 200 away to friends, neighbors and the local gardening group where they sell them to pay for the maintenance of the city beds.

It is all the other things that seem to be taking over... the boxes to store them, the stakes and the extra tillers.

I just love them : )

I'll only have maybe 60 plants in my yard this year. The most I've ever had, but a small amount compared to other people on this forum. I do have at least 90 divisions to give away to friends this year, but I've bought about 25 new ones this year too. WHY, can't I just save my money and plant the divisions from last year...I don't know. I'm a dahlia junkie I guess. I even saw that they had some tubers at the local grocery store in their flower dept and was tempted. I probably would have bought it if my husband wasn't with me...

Dan, Thanks so much for the information!! This is my first year using the neem oil. Root rot is my first concern, fungus following. We'll have sun for the next 7 days before another system moves through. I should be able to get in to pull the mulch back and let it dry out a bit. That's an awful Bermuda story!! It's so beautiful in the yard but it's soooo tenacious!! It grew through our pool liner last year. 80,000 lbs of water couldn't keep it at bay. Maybe some more ideas for fall since I'm probably going to be beating my head against the wall trying to keep it out?? Nicole, solarizing it before it goes dormant? I'm not familiar with that technique...??? Oh and you can definitely take some of this rain!! It's not even good for the ducks anymore, lol!

Very good post, and it's interesting to hear what people have to say. What Suzy says is worth the most serious consideration. I'm confused on the subject. First, I've been gardening for over twenty years, and am on my third serious garden (there have been some minor ones in between), which I've been working on for about a decade now. Currently I have about 350 varieties of roses and about 500-600 plants, not to mention hundreds of other shrubs, subshrubs, perennials, and so on. The garden is currently about two acres in size and will increase a bit more before we stop expanding. All this is to explain my situation. My garden is many things to me. It's a plant collection, with emphasis on old and older roses; I'm particularly fond of the once-flowering old roses which are so little grown in Italy, and of the Teas, also little cultivated. It's my aesthetic experiment, my lifetime work of art, my form of creative expression, and I can't put into words how important this is to me. My garden is also a long term experiment in low-impact gardening. I want to see what happens if I grow roses and other plants with just water the first year, mulch, pruning, weeding, cutting the grass, and not much else. The results have been encouraging enough that I keep on going with the same basic practices. In terms of consumption, my conscience is in pretty good shape. The land the garden takes up was grassland, some of it very weedy and poor, marginal areas given over to weeds, and one part, the shade garden, was a mixture of brushy woods and swamp and the site of our predecessors' burn pile and dump. Our fertilizer is the old hay we use as mulch, a local resource which would otherwise be simply thrown away. The water the garden uses, not a lot, is balanced out by the increased fertility of the soil and greater volume of plant material growing on the land, which also inhibits landslides, which are a very real consideration on our property. I've introduced exotic plant species, but also look for and introduce local native plants to the garden. If I haven't made it clear before, this is anything but prime farmland I'm gardening on, and it would be either grass, brush turning to woodland, or weeds--all three locally abundant--if I weren't gardening there. My husband and I plan on expanding the garden, and we're in a hurry, as he's my chief labor force and is currently in his late seventies, and won't be able to dig planting holes and steer the motor scythe forever. We get poorer every year and I don't see how we'll be able to hire anybody to do the work he does now. Everyone has a limit, or so I suppose, and I suspect that mine is somewhere in the neighborhood of 600-800 varieties of roses. But I don't know whether we'll get there before our resources, of money and manpower, give out. I'm wondering if I can't borrow a horse to be a living lawn mower: I'm told they eat only grass. The money isn't that big a deal. Some people buy clothes or go to the movies or eat out; I buy plants, at moderate expense. I also give and receive a lot of plants, and this cooperative aspect of gardening is one of its aspects that matters to me. But I certainly do wonder at times why I'm dedicating my life to a garden that no one ever sees. This is frustrating, and it also offends, quite deeply, my sense of thrift. I will feel my garden has been a failure if it remains unknown and never touches anyone's life, no matter how beautiful I succeed in making it. It's too much for one person alone to enjoy. I'm familiar with the sensation of greed, and it's an uncomfortable feeling. In spite of the ambitious scale of my garden, my desire to keep working on it doesn't feel like greed to me, not quite, and I certainly have thought about the matter. Could I spend my life more usefully? Quite possibly, as the chief practical result of my decade of labor seems to be that two acres of dirt are more fertile than they were before. I could be earning money, perhaps, staving off starvation and power cutoffs in my old age. That would certainly be useful, to me at any rate. As far as the work I might do is concerned, how many people do truly useful work, work that benefits society? Would I be doing something more globally useful if I had a job in advertising, say, instead of going out right now to shear grass and vetch in my rose beds? So many questions, so few answers. Melissa

Right after my granddaughter was born, I retired. My daughter said to me while she was pregnant that she didnÂt know what she was going to do for daycare and since I had planned on retiring, I offered to watch my granddaughter when my daughter went back to work. She is 16 months old now and I have watched her since she was 6 weeks old, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 4:45 p.m. My daughter lives approximately 50 minutes from me. I get up every morning at 5:30 a.m. to drive to meet my daughter halfway so she doesnÂt have to get up even earlier for work. I drive approximately 80 miles a day. Gas is very expensive and I have been spending hundreds of dollars on gas which I cannot afford, not to mention I have already logged almost 10,000 miles on my van that I purchased used in February this year. I realize that I offered to watch my granddaughter but at the time, the cost of gas did not enter my mind. Today after once again listening to her talk about planning yet another vacation this year (theyÂve already gone on 2 this year), I tried asking her if she could at least fill my car with gas twice a month - she went ballistic and called me greedy! She said she was going to put my granddaughter in daycare and I wouldn't see her again. She brought up that she gave me some money when she got her income tax refund and that it was not her problem that I got myself in a financial bind and that I moved so far away. I responded that the money she did give me out of her income tax was almost what I spent on gas in one month. The financial responsibility for my granddaughter I feel is her parents, not mine. I am not asking to be paid to watch my granddaughter, I am only asking for assistance with the amount of money that I am paying for gas to watch her. If her parents were struggling financially, I would have never even brought it up Â I would have suffered in silence. They have a brand new car and purchased a motorcycle when my granddaughter was about 1 year old Â they spend money like there's no tomorrow! She says, she works hard for her money and she deserves to be able to buy things and go on vacations. I agree, but not at my expense. I also worked hard for over 30 years and deserve to have a nice retirement! I am not asking for full reimbursement on what IÂm spending on gas, only suggested if maybe twice a month they could fill my gas tank. I love my granddaughter very much and really enjoy her, but I simply feel used. Not only do I watch her while they work, I also watch her when they have other plans. This August, she informed me that they are going on vacation for one week so I will be watching my granddaughter. At this point, I am both hurt and disgusted at her response and donÂt even know if our relationship can be salvaged. Was I wrong to ask for help with the cost of gas? Thanks for any feedback.

My DH has custody of my SD so my situation may be different, but I can say it's likely not necessary for you to give up your band. It's important for you to maintain your own interests - a happy person makes a happier step-mom. I also believe it's important to spend time together, so I would say making sure there is time for you all to be together is necessary for your family growth. What you do need to recognize is that you can't have a single person life and a family life at the same time. Family is often about compromise, and that may mean you miss out on some dates with your girlfriends. You need to determine what your priorities are, and then discuss them with your SO. If they mesh, great. If not, you have some things to think about.

People! What do you cut your dahlia tubers with? I bought a curved rug knife. No way is it going to penetrate the stem and tuber. Of course the eyes are between 2 or 3 tubers so I don't know where to cut. That is why, until this year! I am going to cut a finger off I know.

If they didn't come in so many colors, forms, and sizes it would be easy to stick with a lower number. I'm maxed out for a one person operation and am actually cutting back on flowers, adding more veggies. That's my plan anyway.

So, Poochella, what is your max number of dahlias? Just curious ? I thought I was restricting myself to 130 but then I found a few more survivors, and there were bonus dahlias with my orders, and I have some that I lost the names to and want to grow out to see who they are....and.....

Hi Liza ...and those dang hybridizers keep making new beauties LOL

I hit 400 a couple years back and managed those well. Just a few less the past couple years, and, from the looks of things, it will be another jam-packed dahlia year in 2010. Just when I wanted to cut back, someone gifted me 30 new varieties this year. Who am I to look askance at some great new dahlias? But I refuse to be digging up clumps 2 days before Christmas which is what happened last year. You are lucky to be able to get away with leaving yours in the ground. That just doesn't work here.

PD- Try a fruit secateur shears- thin blades, like a pruning shear that can get in those small spaces, stab into tuber crowns and get the job done with all fingers intact. Gempler's has them. Don't fall for the similar Fiskar shears found in stores- they fall apart in hours.
Or if it's a massive clump where you could sacrifice some tubers, try hammering a screwdriver down the stem dead- center. It will help break things apart and you can take it from there with a shears, possibly a knife. Tubers and necks get broken that way though.

Oh, is that what they are. I have a pair and just cut flowers with it. Not sure it will be strong enough but will give it a try. I went for the large pruner type. I guess I will plant but I am sure it will bring on a big freeze!

Poochella you make me feel better (400) I think your a brug addict too? I have about 75 brugs to plant along with 250 dahlias. Pdshop your a brug lover also? have you tried an X-ACTO knife for the dahlias, I find that helps me with the compacted tubers. Cindy

Do you keep them in a greenhouse over winter or do you make them go dormant?

What kinds do you grow?

Would you ever consider a trade? A brug cutting for Dahlias? Can you tell I am begging :)

Let me know. I keep telling myself this is the year to keep brugs but every year life happens and I don't get to them.

PS I know there is a Brug forum but most of them are from zone 8+ so it is hard to get zone 5 advice :)

Hey, Keriann Try to dig up the brugs when you dig up the dahlias, just put them in a pot, I cut mine back but not past the y so you can have blooms sooner. I like to take off all the leaves because the bugs love them in the house, only water them once or twice a month. I put mine in the basement, but some like to have them as house plants (too many bugs for me). I would love to share with you. Cindy

what temp is your basement? i think mine is just a bit colder than the house. i normally keep my brugs in the greenhouse, but you're right they're whitefly and aphid magnents, plus don't really have the rooom for so many full sized plants, not with the 1200 daylily seeds i start every year.

i also finally got dahlias again from poochella. i don't really like the small ones, mostly aa and a sizes but i may try some b's later. what temp do you store these at. i lost all mine the first fall i got them. i dug them and left them lay to dry off and went away for two days and when i got back they had all frozen.

Cody, I keep the house cold 66 or so and the basement is 5 to 10 different I think? Also my house has so much humidity that I have problems with mold, good for plants but not for us. I will try to post a pic of them in storage. Cindy

A brug is short for brugmansia lol

It looks a bit like Datura but the flowers drip down on a much larger tree/shrub, instead up pointing up on a medium size bush.

Brugs can get 12+ feet tall in warmer weather, but up here we hack them back to go dormant. They also have a lovely fragrance. Pop over to the Brugmansia forum, Kylie and others have beautiful pictures posted.

Wow, you guys are my heroes. I cannot overwinter dahlias no matter how I try. I treat them like annuals and start over every year. You all must have some pretty impressive real estate. My limit is a dozen each summer and boy is it hard choosing. ;o)
