How Would You Frame This?
Comments (20)The tape is most likely artist tape which is easily removed and used widely in the arena to not damage the painting. I would mount the work on a full smooth matte, leaving about an inch of open area, then add a cut matte inside a thin frame as you prefer. Don't try matte colors to match, there is a lot going on in the watercolor and needs to stand alone. As a teacher, I assume you know that this is probably a class project or technique the artist held onto. I remember one class where we were only allowed to use two colors resulting in different tones. This is a wash where the artist let the two colors (blue/brown) blend on their own. I like it and actually see a yellow lab in the middle far left hand side. Not unusual for an artist to cut their disliked results into small art pieces from liked areas of a painting. i"d grab the yellow lab, but the piece as a whole is too interesting to cut anything....See MoreHow would you frame these pictures?
Comments (9)Oh those are wonderful! I think you have great vision for seeing that! Most people would probably say white matting and black frames, but IMHO I feel those frames add to some of their charm or history. This will probably sound creepy too, but I'd either antique those frames with a little black (shoe polish or paint) or I'd buy some antique looking ornate frames in the same brown tones. It would probably look nice to mat them, but I'd just get them reprinted into smaller prints through Kodak gallery or Costco and still use either the same frames or new frames in the same size. I hope that makes sense...hard to put my vision into writing. Curious to see what others might suggest and what you decide to do! Good luck--Lukki...See MoreCL Oil Painting- how to 'modernize' frame
Comments (6)I posted about this exact thing a week or two ago. I found a picture, framed with the same linen mat and gold trim, at the thrift store that looks terribly dated because of the frame. I immediately thought to modernize it I'd paint the frame black but an artist on this forum commented that I shouldn't and gave her reasons which made sense. It is sitting in the closet for now until I know what to do with it. I assume since you are collecting Canadian art that you are a fellow Canadian. If it were my art I would hang it in my house during the winter months cause it depicts our winters perfectly! This is the art I found: I will be interested to see what or if you do anything to it. Might give me an idea what can be done with mine....See MoreFine art: Proper way to frame an oil on board
Comments (6)"Traditionally" abstract art is displayed in a simple gallery frame so as to concentrate the viewer's eye on the content of the painting itself, not on the details of the frame. On a painting the size of yours I would allow no more than 5/16 inch to show, probably painted black or gray. Construction of a frame surrounding a painting on board is not quite as simple as it sounds, but I've drawn the construction detail of a two-piece frame for that purpose and a scaled view of your painting with an approximately quarter-inch frame. Using this plan about 1/8 inch on each edge would be lost to view. In a standard wooden frame you could expect to lose as much as 1/2 inch from each edge. Only a metal frame (easily ordered online in a wide range of colors should you so choose) could match that small a visual loss.Obviously, the choice of a frame is as personal a choice as the painting itself, so you should follow your own vision. This is simply an expression of mine....See MoreBoopadaboo
