How joyful were you seeing the old kitchen gone?(pics)

I had been (until last week) stuck with this kitchen for 10 years.

These cabs are frameless. Amazingly, they are pretty sturdy and would not break (but the doors were hanging askew). My hood and Thermador were recently purchased and of course staying. The old maytag only had 2 burners working properly.

Beautiful pantry, no pull-outs, so deep and wide everything gets lost.

trash compactor that no one uses will be trashed. DW is new--free with Thermador range purchase. Staying. Cute mother-in-law helping out with clearing everything out.

The ugliest island in the universe, but it has been so practical in our life as a table, I have to keep the function of it. Oh, the pendants above the island look like ancient Chinese boomerangs that cut off people's heads.

Target microwave, toaster oven, my precious Kitchen Aid mixer, and my energy-wasting 20 yr old fridge.

Home office area. Countertop consists of either granite tiles (not full piece)for the perimeter and some kind of laminate for the island and desk. My GC said my cabs were pretty ok for the garage level.

Gone! Everything gone! Torn down to stubs! Dumped in the big bin! New cabs are 1/2 way in! I am even getting a pot filler!

oh so fun! what a good feeling to get everything out. very exciting that you're getting your dumpling pot filler :)

and a good reminder to document my current (and soon to be OLD) kitchen! (also pink like yours :)

was a glorious day! I so wish I had insisted on taking a turn with the sledge hammer. It would have been so very satisfying to give my old kitchen a taste of what it gave me for years. :)

Our contractor told us 8 weeks - it actually took 12. It was the cabinet maker that held things up for 4 weeks but it was worth the wait! Actually, for all the work that they did: gutted kitchen & 2 other rooms (1 wall was gutted down to the horse hair, mud and straw mixture), masonry work on old stone fireplace & repoint 2 chimneys, remove 2 walls and add headers, jack up 200+ year old house and add steel pillars in cemented support areas on dirt basement floor, refinish 120+ yr old hardwood floors in 2 rooms, replace 1 window, drill through 2 ft. of solid stone wall in one of the double chimneys for hood exhaust, rip out old heating ducts and replace; also work done on existing stairwell & attic landing, as well as totally new footprint in kitchen. I can relate to "pasture19" in that I became quite accomplished with 2 hot plates, a microwave, a crockpot, and a refrigerator in the laundry room. (When I came home from work some days the workers were salivating from the delicious aroma drifting from the crockpot in the laundry room.) As strange as this may sound, it reminded me of childbirth in that when it was all over I quickly forgot how much of a pain it was going through it. I suspect after you're in your new kitchen, the long wait will just be a dull memory that fades with each day. Best of luck for a timely remodel!

I didn't mention that the message above was sent from a library near I-75, near London, KY. Being from London, Ontario, I'd gone in there on the same trip, three years ago, wanting to send some messages ... and, thinking that I was in a library, asked to use computer, and for internet access, to be met with some substantial reservations ... ... until I realized that things didn't look right for a library, and, when I asked if it were, was told that, no, ... it was a bank. So I dug out a one-Dollar and a two-Dollar Canadian coin from my pocket ... which they found interesting, as they'd never seen them. The library in London is not now operational ... they have a lovely, spacious new County Library near London. This is on Sunday afternoon, after the conclusion of the Korea Missionaries' Reunion. I enjoyed the gathering, what little of it I attended - mentioned some aspects elsewhere, earlier (regarding plans for Sunday, I think). Now off to visit my niece and family in Gainesville, GA. I haven't been out much this week - staying home and getting the establishment more or less back in shape. An art show has take over the village church today, and when I saw one of the old guys walking down the street away from the church, I'd forgotten that we were to meet at a seniors' apartment building this week, till I got to the church, then as I was going to the meeting place, passed him, there was traffic (four-lane street), I went down a short way and turned around, came back to pick him up. He was nowhere to be seen ... I almost went into a store there ... then saw someone walking down a side street, drove down there, picked him up and we went to the Old Farts' Coffee Hour. I wrote a story about the church magazine's situation, our discussion group, and my getting to know the other members in a much more in-depth situation than we usually find, maybe it would be a good idea to suggest it for other churches, to send to the magazine. I'd checked it with the minister of that church and went to pick it up today: she had minimal suggestions as to editorial revisions. Had a good visit with another cancer survivor that I've known for a dozen years, both members of an investment group: he'd had radiation and chemo at the same time, not a pleasant experience, and one doc had suggested that he might have only a few months to live ... but he's still here, and going strong. Fewer visits to bathroom, so feel that I'm on a much longer leash. At one grocery store today a staff person had picked up a stray bag of milk, and another said that he was careful about picking up stray items near the bathroom when the door was closed ... and a man came out just then to reclaim his bag. I thanked them for having that available bathroom, as I had made good use of it several times in recent months, sometimes when given quite short notice from an interior authority of an essential change in my plans. Weather's been rainy and chilly, but warmer, and the landlord cultivated both gardens yesterday, initial pass. He took out a full tractor trailer load of sod, yesterday afternoon: I was embarrassed, for I hadn't removed some of the stakes. So I guess that spring has finally sprung. "Spring is sprung ... the grass is riz ... I wonder where ... the flowers is?". Actually, forsythia and daffodils are out ... and some grape hyacinths down behind the shed. Can't resist this: one of the items passed around at the Old Farts' was a colour "pic" of a rather rough landscape, with a smiling civilian with an automatic rifle in a saddle atop a moose carrying large antlers ... titled, "Canadian Border Patrol ... watching for illegal Americans". Hope you're all having a good day - good wishes for the rest of the week. ole joyfuelled ... who, sitting at table right next to the stove, forgot to turn the burner off under the stew pot last night ... and had some scraping to do as a result

Happy 89.5 Ed. And I hope we are ALL around to wish you a happy 90th. edited to add: yes you can freeze the cake. I wrap fairly large pieces (uncut) in plastic wrap or a ziploc getting as much air out as possible. Then wrap again in foil. Label and freeze. Depending on how much you have left, you could freeze multiple packages to enjoy later, just don’t wait too long or it will be dry.

Wow I love those pink/purple cabinets!!

Ok, here's some pics of my old kitchen. Notice the sink counter area? That was the only counter space in the entire kitchen. And look what the sink cab had become over the years. Rotten!! And check out the wood SHINGLES along where the walls meet the ceiling! I sorta kinda thought they were a little cool when we moved in 12 years ago but that lasted about a minute.

And what it looked like after the second day of demo! Of course the sentimental side of me feels bad about knocking the entire room down... but it needed to be done. It was rotting and it was a very poor use of space. I'm looking forward to putting up finished kitchen photos!

my remodel is in the planning stage, demo will be early next year. i am looking forward to countertops, a new range, a ventilation system and a decent paint job!!!

my cats are going to miss the oh so cozy cabinets that they have figured out how to open and hide in!

Ewww country gal! My parents had that wallpaper and avocado green appliances! I can't believe that was ever fashionable. Wonder what features of today's kitchens that will make people cringe in 40 years?

I dreaded the demolition and actually felt quite sad. I had lived with that kitchen for more than 30 years. I really wanted the old blue-green tile to be gone but was still sad to see it taken out. Many memories in the old kitchen. We are keeping and re-crafting the cabinets (original 1927 gumwood). Am happy about the new tile floor, new counters, appliances and layout, but demolition was not joyous -- at best, just a relief. Now that it is done I am really excited about the new kitchen and have to make myself be patient.

I have to admit that I expected to feel nostalgic about the old kitchen-we, too have lived here for over 30 years. When I got my new range and MW 2 years ago I actually took pictures of the old mustard yellow range and MW combo, and I was strangely sad to see it go. But-the new kitchen is so open, light-filled and lovely that I really don't miss the old one.

Maybe joyful is too strong a word for me-happy and thankful, perhaps.

leela4, I am right there with you. The kitchen we tore down was not even "ours" We moved into this house 12 years ago as renters... and wound up buying it 6 years later. It was our first kitchen together as adults living together but it really was never ours. And... it was horribly planned and just falling apart and nasty! So, good riddance!! We're already so happy with the incomplete new kitchen that we've already forgotten the old one :) So thankful to have modern day conveniences that are really not even that big of a deal... ie: a little bit more counter space, a DW, more cabinets, etc. We've finally made it to the 1990s!! ;)
