What would be approp. floor or tile for my front entry/foyer?
Comments (4)Hi, quite often you would see the vestibules tiled up to mid-wall height, with subway tile and chair rail and base moldings also in ceramic. The floor would be small unglazed mosaic. There could be a border like a greek key or other pattern, and there could be an actual mosaic "rug" in the center. It was popular to have the family monogram or last name inlaid, or even just the house number. People often went overboard when decorating these spaces, as it was among the first things that a caller would see, and they were acutely attuned to making the first impression an overwhelmingly strong statement about their wealth/class. Comments (8)Thank you. We have been remodeling on a budget for the last 2 yrs. My husband will not go for wood in the kitchen, foyer or hall. We do have a large dog and a very active family they would get ruined. I was thinking maybe something in the same color scheme as the wood, but all the interior doors are dark wood like the floors. Comments (14)Is it an open or closed foyer? I just saw pics from my childhood home this morning (my parents moved years ago, but neighbors have kept tabs on it and sent all of us the listing when it went on the market... oh, the nostalgia!!!!). It's a Craftsman (more or less) and it's definitely not a fancy house, but I actually loved and *still love* the tiled/mosaic foyer that opened into a hardwood-floor living room. There *is* a leaded glass door separating the two spaces, so that makes a difference -- but still. If I got a chance to renovate another old house, I would seriously consider the tiled foyer. Just have to move back to upstate NY so I can afford it... ;) There should be an upright piano under that window next to the foyer door!! Waaaah.......See Moreparma42
