Custom shower curtains

In one of Shee's posts (I think regarding her master br and bath re-do), the topic of shower curtains came up. Shee and I both commented on not being satisfied with most ready made (store) shower curtains.

For one thing, they are usually 72 x 72 or 70 x 72. I like a shower curtain raised higher and like to come down almost to the floor. The standard size doesn't cover it.

I'm looking at changing things up in our master br and bath a bit and have been thinking about the shower curtain (yes, in my love of fabric, I opted for a curtain over doors). I

saw one on a blog recently that was, in fact, a ready made curtain with fabric added. I've emailed the gal for hopefully a better pic. I'm attaching the pic so you can see what I'm talking about.

I also saw one I loved that had a pleated piece added to a curtain - out of a coordinating fabric.

I'd love to see pics of any of your custom shower curtains if you would share. TIA!!

I agree with you, I am not satisfied with ready made shower curtains either. I hope we get to see pics of custom shower curtains.

Would you happen to know where I can get a shower curtain rod that looks more like a drapery rod. I have looked online but not having much luck. I have looked at Bed Bath and Beyond, they did have one but it wasn't quite what I am looking for.

I prefer a shower curtain on a bath tub for the same reasons mentioned. I like to be able to pull it all the way back and have the space feel open while I soak. I also imagine if you're helping a child bathe in a tub, a shower curtain would be easier to handle. That said, if you have children/teens showering in the tub, I suspect a glass door would be more likely to keep water from getting all over the floor. In a shower only, I prefer a glass door. I absolutely hate it when shower curtains billow into the shower and stick to me while I'm trying to shave my legs. It's one of my biggest bathroom pet peeves. There are certainly some nice shower curtains out there. I remodelled my main/guest bathroom and swapped the standard tub for a deep soaker tub (with shower). I picked the Restoration Hardware Italian Stitched Hotel Shower Curtain. Now I see it's offered in extra long! Maybe I'll have to order a new one. We rarely shower in there, so I tie it back with a coordinating ribbon and I think it looks really nice.

On the subject of two curtains...unless you mean to draw them back in both directions, which would expose the liner, (unless you used two of those as well, and left the whole business open), I would combine the two curtains in the traditional way...which means, you cut the second one in half, and sew the two halves to the two sides of the first one. Otherwise, you have either a seam or two side hems running down the middle of the whole business. That means undoing the top and bottom hems, at least far enough back to re-sew them in a continuous hem once the pieces are joined all the way along. Any good seamstress should understand that if you decided to have it done.

My contractor perhaps someone might be able to do an "acid wash" to deal with that. It would probably also need to be glazed. Before you start monkeying around with that you should understand that there is no longer any way to get a cast iron tub properly reporcelained because of changes in the EPA rules. There is one company that will do steel, but they have a five-year wait at the moment. The reglazing will be a temporary thing. How long it will last is kind of a luck of the draw thing, but on the whole you don't want to mess with the surface more than you can help. I've seen so many great old bathrooms ruined by refinishing the tub. I would try all cleaning methods first. If all the normal ways fail, ROG is expensive, but worth a try when otherwise the tub would have to go. For the rust, try Bar Keeper's Friend if you haven't done so already. (Not the same as comet or bon ami) Roarah, your tub is amazing.

aprilneverends, (Off topic-sorry OP), but I have another idea for a non-standard length for you whenever you eventually need it. I needed a 96" length one for my dd's bathroom-talk about a nightmare. I basically had just a few limited plain ones to purchase or bite the bullet for a custom one on etsy which would run close to $200. However, I saw the exact style I wanted at our Ballard Design outlet and purchased 2 for $30. Then I found a seamstress who sewed them together at the perfect place. Voila! A semi-custom shower curtain for $55 total.Obviously, your pattern has to work or it will look mismatched, but in my case it did.

tsan - I got a nice orb rod for our master bath - it has decorative ends (somewhat). I found it at Home Depot or Lowes one.

I really like that curtain with the double pleated skirt. I saw another idea when I visited my cousin. She had taken a second spring loaded rod and hung it well above her shower curtain, then had made a lush rod pocket valance with a decorator linen fabric. The valance looked like it was triple width the shower. It hung well below the top of the shower curtain.

There are a lot of extra-long shower curtains online. Pretty one's too! Below is a link for custom curtains. I particularly like the blue curtain on the left.

On Apartment Therapy they suggested sewing part of a sheet to the top of a 72 x 72 curtain if that's all you can find.

The site that Oakleyok provided is nice, but pricey!!!

Here's one I have for a small shower. I did a rod pocket on top because we don't use this shower anymore, otherwise, I'd do clips or tab top.

I used a lightweight quilt to make a shower curtain for our guest bath. Just folded over the top to make it the right length and added grommets. (Slit the fabric with an X-acto knife the make it easier to put the grommets through two thick layers.)

I've made two shower curtains for DD1 out of Shabby Chic twin flat sheets. I use the top finished edge for the finished bottom. Cut what little extra from the other end and double it over for new top. I always had done button holes for the rings. No pictures, sorry.
