Your taste is very good, so you should go with your gut feeling. But if it doesn't turn out, well, even the great decorators make mistakes. Just count yourself amidst the elites striving for greatness! Then fall back on Plan B.

Yes, Wasabi is bright, but it's just one room, and you might enjoy having one bright fun room to counter all that elegant, sophisticated cool.

I was actually thinking about you last night knowing that today is your big day. I know what you are going through and although mine was only red walls, it was the first time in my life I have had wall color so deep. When the painters were finally done, even though I love the color, it still takes time getting used the dramatic change I see everytime I go past the foyer. I'm sure in time I wouldn't even be able to image the walls less dramatic. Can hardly wait for my first visitor!

You have shown great taste so far. I am looking forward to seeing the finished product. But should YOU not like it, then redo it yourself. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I love everything in your house so far. I bet it will look great! If not, like you said, it's only paint. Although I would sleep on it before making changes if you think you don't like it. I am sure the wasabi will be a big change and may take some adjusting to--especially before the furniture goes in.

I am impressed your husband is on board with the wasabi--my husband would agree to it if that's what I wanted--but would be voting for a nice "coffee" color--that's his pick for every room.

Can you post pics of the hot pink--I love that idea.

Can't wait to see it all!! Sounds fabulous to me and I love the hot pink. I'm in the process of painting all my interior doors black. I'm about 2/3 way done. I'll take some pics for you when I can. I wound up using semi-gloss instead of high gloss. The black shows alot of imperfections(which our doors definitely have), but I LOVE the way it looks.

still getting positive feedback from dh, although no paint on the walls in the living room yet. So no nuclear glow to report, yet.

My MB is painted wasabi and we love it. I painted a faux tray ceiling in there in antique gold and it really looks good. I think you'll like the wasabi, it can go cool so it should look great with the gray.

I am very excited for you. I am so scared to take chances when decorating...but all the looks that I *LOVE* are ones that I can tell were RISKY to the homeowner. So thank you for inspiring me. I can honestly say that everything you have mentioned sounds wonderful, creative and exciting!

I need daylight to take photos. They will be taken soon! I couldn't snap them when I got home after work because there were some painters still working, and then,darkness came.

The ceiling color is great, what a risk that has paid off. My new chandy looks great with the dark ceiling in the background.

And those Baltic gray walls--oh so warm. I was so afraid that even after 30 different sample jars of paint I may have chosen a cold gray, but nooooo it's not cold. whew.

And now onto the famous Wasabi green. It is so not scary.
Although, I guess I haven't seen it all the various daylight options. I was very happy to see it when I came home.

Now the bad news. I think I have to call the painter and ask to have them come back. The dark ceiling looks a little streaky to me. You know, the roller marks. Is it just because of the high gloss? I was expecting if there was an imperfection in the ceiling it would show, but I wasn't expecting the roller marks. hmmm. And of course, I think they paint the ceiling first so as to not mess up the walls. I hope they can do another coat. I'll have to see.

So hang in there, photos are to follow soon. Thanks for all the words of confidence, it helped me get through the work day.

I am on a quest for a bright cheerful green for my living room and would love to see your slightly nuclear green. I am looking for something fun and not stodgy. I have collected paint strips from every paint display I have passed for the last few years. I am not sure I have found the perfect color yet.
I love the hot pink and instantly thought of my raincoat which is a sedate black on the outside with a wild silk print inside. Now, you are going to make me come up with a good color for our coat closet, aren't you? LOL I am not a big hot pink person myself, but will need something quirky like that to shamelessly steal your idea ;)

bee, putting another coat of paint on the ceiling with the already painted wall should not be a problem at all. They make self-adhering masking film that is used to cover walls. It is sooooo easy and gently sticks to anything. Your painters should know this product. It's called gripnguard. It's great stuff and doesn't cost alot. I got it at Benjamin Moore. Can't wait to see pics.

Ok, so it's kind of hard to photograph a room at 7:30 am on the West side of the house, but I tried. Here are the photos! The most accurate photos of the color is the area under the upper part of the stairs, it is not a blue toned gray at all. Like I said, it wasn't easy getting these photos at this time of day.

I'll take any input on the door, should the sidelight panels be black, or would it close in the area too much?

Haven't called the painter yet, it's on my To Do list for today. There are lots of photos, I'm not including any before because they are not really relevant. FYI, it was golden color before.

Ceiling looks good, but I love the living room color, the pictures will look great with that background color.

I dont think I would paint the sidelights black, might be too much, although I would like to see the door and sidelights the same color but just not black.

The wasabi barely looks green, so my quest continues. I think it is a very nice color, but it seems very olive/gold to me, and nothing like the color of actual wasabi.
BTW - I really like those prints too. Nature is a wonderful artist.

Just wanted to give a quick update.

Talked to the painter and he feels that the roller marks are a direct result of the high gloss. He said he saw them too, and in fact he said he rolled it sideways to try and eliminate them. He told me to live with it a few days, call him after Thanksgiving and we can try to work it out. He said that we could do the "dead flat" if I wanted, which would show no marks at all.

I'm not sure which way I should go on this, I thought the high gloss would give me the light bouncing back and give me the cool finish I want, but I really think the streaks make it look like I painted it and not a pro.

The painter is a very good painter, in fact he is an old family friend, and we recommend him to everyone. I'm just not sure what to do.

Wow, looks great even without furniture, rugs, accessories, etc. That means it will only get better. Not sure what to tell you about the ceiling. You may be noticing it now more than you will when everything gets put back in place. So I'd live with it. One other thought, if you can handle another venture out onto a limb, what about painting the stair railing black? I did that to mine (along with the inside of the front door, like yours) and absolutely love it.

Glad you took the risks. Your space is big and can handle that kind of drama. Wonderful vision and well done!

I'm sorry to hear about the roller marks. Do you think you'd be happier with a flat ceiling and with the no roller marks? Maybe they happened because itâÂÂs such a dark color and itâÂÂs glossy? Are they really that noticeable or is it just because you're really checking it out?

The Wasabi reads olive/gold on my monitor also, looks perfect with the prints. Maybe an eggshell for the ceiling instead of the high gloss?

I've always thought that high gloss finishes really needed to be sprayed. I found this article talking about painting furniture and he recommended an oil-based paint because it self levels better than latex, which decreases roller marks. Obviously you wouldn't be able to sand between coats on the ceiling but if you are committed to your vision you may try the paint he recommends. I know that dark tints can be difficult, though.

I just finished painting my front door and sidelights black and the coat closet doors that are to the left of the front door. I have a dark green on the walls. I don't think it's too dark. I know this is up for discussion, but I prefer the sidelights to be the same color as the door. Especially on the inside of the house. I also agree with jjam about painting your railing black. It will help to tie in the front door. On our staircase, our railing and treads are black while our risers are white.

I thought about painting the railing dark too, or even staining it with a gel stain. But I am very nervous about this job. I mean, paint on a wall or a door, can be repainted. Right now, the railing matches the floor. I'm not in love with the railing, really. But maybe if it was oak, but I have no idea what the wood even is, well, I think it's Tree Wood. (lol).

The railing makes me nervous, if I screw it up, I can't just go out an buy a new one. Well, I could, but I really don't want that expense!

I just posted about MAB vs SW Pro Classic. Turns out the paint currently on the ceiling is MAB. Could this be the cause of the roller marks?????

I painted just a flat finish paint and had streaks, and found out the paint was fast-drying so it had dried before I got to rolling over the edge of the previous section and left streaks. Don't know if that is the issue - I have never done high gloss.
By the way - I think the ceiling looks great. Wasabi is a nice rich color too. Looks like they go nicely.

I bet it is the fact that it is drying too fast. Great for those one day makeovers but not so much for this project.

I used Pro Classic satin acrylic on my cabinets and it does not like to be messed with after application. I had to work fairly quickly so I didn't drag the paint. Not sure if high gloss is like that.

Well, I am thrilled to see your pics. Love the Wasabi. Not too bright at all.

I would think about using the wall color (same sheen as the door) on the side lights and trim. The white doesn't feel right, but I think black might be too much.

If you do think the gloss/streaking problem boils down to "open time" or how quickly the paint dries, you could turn down the heat when you have the next coat done. Cooler, moister conditions (no dry heat) facilitate slower drying.

The colors look great. Back in the 1980's Lynette Jennings had a DIY show and she always said "Go ahead and paint your front door your favorite color" and "People are so scared to use dark colors, go ahead and do it". Soooo I did.
I painted my livingroom-diningroom a deep rich wine/burgundy color. I was at work gritting my teeth and kept telling myself, Lynette said go ahead, the first day I got home and it was very streaky. The second day was better and by the third coat it was great. Lynette said so. I later painted my now computer room teal green, and it still is. Old house with wide white mouldings. The other I painted a lighter color after living with it for approx. 15 yrs.

So ladies, go ahead and do it, it is only paint.

If it were me, I would paint the banister black - it would look so crisp and elegant against the white spindles (I don't think that's the right word...). I think it might lean a little country now that it is among all the new glamorous colors. Just a thought - :)

Your paint choices look great. When I paint with semi-gloss (never used gloss) I always add flotrol to the paint as it helps with leveling so you don't see the brush marks. There may be others out there that do the same thing.

I wouldnâÂÂt do the railings in black - I like how they match the floor, and add a warm, natural balance for all the grey.

But I would think about painting the spindles black to work with all the grey tones and the black door.

That said, I am wondering if you considered a more âÂÂwowâ color for the door, like the deep purple in the artwork in your LR,

Your house is in my inspiration photos. I love your color choices (so bold and fresh) and I think everything looks great so far! Sorry about the roller marks... maybe they won't be so noticeable once everything is finished?

Thanks to everybody who held my hand, and have given me advice about the ceiling. I'm still not sure what to do though.

I need to get down to the SW store and have a talk with the experienced worker-man there. If he says I can get a nice finish with high gloss paint, then I'm going to ask for another high gloss coat. I am thinking that less than premium rollers were used...there are little roller chunks on the ceiling.

My dh's opinion is now that he has seen how cool the high gloss looks, despite the roller marks and the chunks, he doesn't really want to go "flat".

I'm currently busy looking for some furniture for that green room. I'm leaning towards gray leather sliding arm chairs from West Elm. Haven't seen it in person yet though. I'm only going to put the 2 chairs and a table between them in there. No couch.

And if you recall, the inside of the coat closet is hot pink, I found lime green velvet hangers for in there. So fun. And of course 2 lime green baskets for the shelf. Pictures to follow!
