We have these bowls from Amazon. Also have the larger pasta bowls that we use for stews and soups and, well, pasta.

I know what you mean about portion control. We only use small plates here -- 8" or 9". I think these cereal bowls are a normal size...of course my kids fill them to overflowing with cereal!

I use corelle ware in winter frost white as my every day set and have for the past 35 years. Their cereal bowls are the exact same size as they have been. What's nice about them is, if anything happens to a dish, they will replace it for free.

What DH and I do is use their lunch plate as our dinner plate for the same reason you're looking for a smaller cereal bowl. I like the corelle ware too as they have such a wide variety of dishes to choose from including a soup plate, a rice bowl and they even make a dish that can be used for desserts or compotes that's smaller than a dessert bowl. They are also adding square plates and more attractive mugs to the mix.

You might also head to your local goodwill store or salvation army as you will find vintage dishes there that may be of the size you are looking for.

I bought WMs Sonoma dishware for our lakehouse without thinking, and their cereal bowls are what I would serve a side dish in. Ridiculous.

Anyway, I love the 1 cup bowls from Anthropologie. All of our regular everyday dinnerware at our primary home is white (most of it Wedgwood Countryware with misc white serving piece from Pillyvuyt (sp?) etc). The Wedgwood bowls aren't ginormous, but the Anthro ones are perfect for everything, including controlling portion sizes. Since everything else is white, we mix and match the colors from Anthro.

I adore vintage Johnson Brothers pieces. My everyday china is JB rose chintz. Through the years we broke a few pieces so in an effort to replace them I went to ebay. I found that the more vintage the piece was the more beautiful the colors were. Since then I have been purchasing only vintage pieces when I need more of a particular JB pattern. My very favorite is their blue and white Coaching Scenes. The cereal bowls, imo are of a perfect size and they are the most used of all our pieces.

Yes, they are the same size; the one cup. We like the patterns as it goes better with the delicate feel of the Wedgwood, but we have some of the lattes too.

Warning, they are addictive. They are our go-to size for everything. We probably have 8-10 in each of four colors, and when you open our dishwasher that is what takes up most of the real estate.

I like annie have corelle winter frost and use the cereal bowls for soup also.

I also love the latte bowls. They are a manageable size and cute too.

Is it a problem that I just marked my calendar for next week to go to Anthro and buy some bowls?

I have been obsessing about mixing bowls, too, which might be a topic for another post. We are running out of storage space so I want to get a set of mixing bowls that's pretty enough to display on an open shelf. This is causing me some stress this week. I can't display my plastic Home Goods bowls on an open shelf. Do you think I could find ANY mixing bowls that I deem "good enough" to put on my shelf? Nope. None. So far. But like some of my friends here, I am OCD and will hunt until I've found the right ones.

Our Anthro here is so small. It doesn't carry much of the housewares stuff. Which is a pain, since I'd love to see the relative sizes of the bowls.

We need nice mixing bowls, too. My husband thinks I'm crazy since I'm constantly looking at dishware/glassware.

I like the ones from Fishs Eddy, Sue. Our current bowls are from there, but unfortunately they haven't held up all that well.

Do you live near a Kroger? I have white bowls from there that have been GREAT for 2 years.....not a long test, but I have others that have not lasted that long, and were WAY more than the $2 each I paid for these!

I think Crate & Barrel has pretty sets of mixing bowls. They have different colored sets seasonally, so depending on your color scheme, you might have to wait until the new spring ones are introduced to find a set you like.

sas95, I totally understand your predicament about finding the right size bowls. I have also seen cereal bowls that were way too big for what a normal size bowl of cereal should be, imo.

I bought some from Amazon last year, and not knowing which size to get, I bought the 28 oz. bowls first and then went back and bought the 20 oz. bowls, the size I preferred for cereal. So I have both sizes now for different things. Here is what they look like. Not nearly as beautiful as mtnrdredux's bowls, but they work, and this may give you an idea of sizes if nothing else.

I like the idea of using the smaller plates too. Some of the plates are so big that they only encourage us to fill up.

I have ones very similar to the Fish Eddy's Sue posted. They are white and came from Walmart(!). Also use them for soup. Only they've begun to darken from so much use, not sure if it's from hot temps or my well water. Might add it's only me here and I tend to use and wash the same bowl over and over even tho I have a stack. lol

mtn, I love those anthrop. bowls. I wish we had still had a Pier One Import here, I use to love browsing their wares.

How about checking out any local potteries in your area? I love hand thrown bowls and stoneware and have found some gorgeous pieces.

Curious about those of you with those deep cereal bowls similar to what mtn posted...do they fit well in your dishwasher?

I've had the same cereal bowls for 17 years. They were part of a set we got when married...I think they are Pfaltzgraff. Just last week I noticed that somehow we are done to 5 bowls out of the original 12 though I don't remember losing/breaking seven of them! They are just a plain white bowl, however mine have a wider rim and aren't as deep. What I LOVE about them is that they fit perfectly in not only my first old Kenmore dishwasher but also in my newish Kitchenaid dishwasher. I can nestle them in the middle of my top rack and they fit perfectly inbetween the plastic divider things. None of my other bowls seem to fit so well, and when I looked recently at open stock cereal bowls, most seemed to be similar in shape to what mtn has. I know those will take u so much room in my dishwasher since they can't really be "stacked" like my other bowls (IOW, they go between the slots just like plates but in my upper rack). Not sure if I'm explaining myself well...

I already run my dishwasher daily since I have four kids so two meals at home plus prep dishes etc makes the dishwasher fill up quickly. If I had to make more room for the bowls, I'd have way less room for other dishes, glasses, etc. Just wondering how you fit those deeper bowls into your DW. I'll see if I can take a picture - think my DW is running right now though as I forgot to turn it on this morning.

You're absolutely right - rimless deep bowls are a pain to load in the DW.

I have these bowls in a couple of colors from Anthropologie. Lots more colors available. No chipping.

Thinking about the OP's question, I realize that I often use soup mugs for cereal, and cereal bowls for soups and stews that are served as the main meal. I wish there were more size choices within design sets.

I know what you mean! I had a hard time finding a set of china that did not have a large cereal bowl. Finally found one on sale at Belk. the cereal bowl is a 1 cup size and the soup bowls are normal as well, with a rim. We use the smaller bowl most of the time, for all sorts of uses.

When I have cereal, it is either in the above mentioned (white bowl) or in this smaller clear glass 1/2 cup bowl.

I agree with the assertion that bowls seem to have gotten completely out of hand. I recently got myself a set of Crate and Barrel dishes in the Scavo pattern, and the bowls are gigantic! They certainly seem better suited to serving dishes than regular dinnerware. I adore the set in general, but I could certainly do with some smaller bowls! I got a full set of the appetizer-size bowls, but those are too small for standard use. If only there were a middle ground!
