My impression is that all you need to start is a deeper toned paint color on the wall to balance out the intensity of the furniture colors, and to get rid of the mirror over the fireplace.

Both the paint color and the mirror are too cold and clinical with the lovely furnishings in the spaces.

If you prefer a lighter wall color, look at sw kerstal white which I have successfully used in several rooms. It looks white but has a lot of pigment to it and can marry together gray, creme, almond, white, and gold tones.

If you want a gray, our DD chose BM chelsea gray for our living room and we just love it. It adds drama but isn't too dark at all.

To me the house gives off a kind of 50's modern vibe. I think it WANTS to be neutral--the fireplace, flooring, slate in the foyer...so I would embrace the neutral and do all different shades of creams, tans, browns....and maybe small pops of color in pillows and art. Definitely change the wall color to an earthy tan--maybe a color from your rug or fireplace-- and neutral drapes. I love those rooms that do different shades of one color...they are soft and soothing. Look on Houzz for ideas for neutral rooms.

I don't mind the aqua and orange and brown...in fact it's fairly popular (look at the design seeds thread and you'll see some rooms with this color scheme.) I agree the paint color is not the best...probably something with less yellow.

The current furniture arrangement is awkward...it looks like it's set up for a debate. Personally, I find slipper chairs less than comfortable as you can't curl up in them. Instead, I'd eliminate the slipper chair and maybe get another armed chair to replace it if you need comfortable seating. Otherwise the beige chair is fine. Eliminate the wicker...it's too outdoorsy. Get a table to put between the 2 chairs on that side. The wicker one can work temporarily if you cover it with a table cloth to the floor. Put a lamp on it. The room needs lamplight. If you need more conversational seating, then get a couple of ottomans or a bench to put along the long end of the rug so it won't block the view of the TV. Then add a square coffee table to the middle for people to use.

Or I see you have a love seat in the dining room...perhaps, if the 2 single chairs are low enough to see over to watch tv, you can put the love seat where the 3 chairs are now and use 2 of the chairs facing the fireplace. Get some end tables and lamps to put on either side of the loveseat.

I would also move the white cabinet to the fireplace wall to help balance the weight of the fireplace.

I can't quite see what's behind the sofa, but I would put a sofa table back there with 2 lamps on it, again for lamplight in the room. If that's a PC back there, the sofa table can serve as a desk area too.

The other armoire thing has an inappropriate chair at it...get a better desk chair to use there if that area is used. In fact, if you move the love seat and the mirror, that may go better on the wall in the dining room...then you can put the bookcase cabinet where the armoire was and add one of the chairs and a floor lamp and create a reading area.

I also am not a fan of the window treatments. While the color is bright and cheerful, the style doesn't seem to work well with the windows and the drape over the door seems odd, and the corner treatment seems to permanently block a window. Maybe think about what actual functionality needs to be served and then we can toss around some ideas for how that could better be accomplished.

I agree to eliminate the mirror over the fireplace. I think the area would be better served with a large piece of art.

Just some ideas for you...my suggestions may or may not work depending on how you and your family live...function should come first.

I love your house! But have to agree that the arrangement is awkward. The mirror over the fireplace seems to suit the era of the home and I think could look fine with fewer things on the mantel - maybe something bolder.

If it were my house, I'd move the tv to the corner to the right of the fireplace and float the couch facing the fireplace so that you can walk behind it where the tv is now. Put the loveseat where the couch is currently, with the orange chair angled next to the left of the fireplace (angled into the room). I'd lose the other chairs.

If possible, I'd look for something more interesting and less black to replace that large piece (is that a computer in it ?) It looks like you have lots of space in the dining room, so I might look for a good deal on craigslist and have a large piece where the loveseat is now. In the alternative, I think I would paint that black piece to reduce its dominance and make it blend in better.

I also agree that the draperies don't seem right. They look more suitable for a bedroom to me. Some of the window treatment experts here might have some good suggestions on what would look better. I personally would like a print in your home, maybe something like this?

First, let me say this is a BEAUTIFUL HOME!! You have a great room ahead of you, but before anyone talks about color, I'd recommend working on your existing furnishings layout so you can use this space while you make some decisions about color and furnishings.

I've jotted down some notes on your pictures. You have to make a decision about the loveseat & keyboard in the dining room, and the two office/desk areas? in the living room. Once you provide some direction, we'll be able to help you with the present layout so you can use the room more effectively.
