Tired of living in a fishbowl. Need drapery help

Hi all

I am not a frequent poster and goodness knows, I can't offer advice that would be of much help but I hope that someone can help me.

My LR and DR need window treatments. The LR window is floor to ceiling with baseboard heaters so I can't do to the floor drapery. They are casements with 5 divisions and grills. Width is about 125 inches with white mouldings. I considered and almost ordered custom with pinch pleats and mouunted on decorative roda with rings. But with the drapery so heavy. I was concerned about tugging on the fabric to close everynight and open in the AM.

I could do wooden blinds but should I do white or brown. My floors are medium stained hickory and I have dark furniture.

is it possible to do stationary panels on short decorative rods with sheers that can be opened and closed. What type of rod for the sheers and would that work with the short decorative rods on each end of the window.

The LR and DR face the street ( corner lot ) and I need privacy at night.

Have you considered pinch pleats on traverse rods? It would make it easy to open and close. I'm a huge fan of pinch pleats.

In my LR, I have pinch pleat panels on wooden rods with large wooden rings. Although they can close, I keep them open and just open/close the pinch pleated sheers that are on a traverse rod. I think the idea is similar to what you are looking for.

Thanks for your reply. If I understand this correctly, you have the pinch pleated sheers on a traverse rod and ontop of the traverse rod you have decorative rod with rings and pinch pleated drapes. Are the sheers also under the drapes or do they just butt up against the edges of the drapes. The traverse rod has the cords for easy opening and closing.

In the day when you want to open the sheers, do they disappear completely underneath the drapes.

This treatment looks lovely. For years I had the heavy drapes and the sheers and the jabots but my husband prefers the open feel for the day so that we can get maximum light.

Plus our cat likes to sit on the back of the sofa and look out. he had destroyed my previous pinch pleated sheers.

Cyn, That is the way I had it arranged prior to this set-up. I really liked it, except for the fact that it was akward to always have to sit sideways to watch the TV, or sit in the chair apart from DH, KWIM? Plus, the TV was lost on the huge blank wall. Thanks for the compliments on the baby pics. Good idea to save the chair for grandbabies. I'm a person who gets rid of everything, but i like the idea of saving the chair & ottoman. So my 4 year old and I rearranged this morning, and I like it! The only tricky part will be running the cable over the fireplace somehow, but I'll let DH worry about that. (Why can't somebody invent wireless cable/satellite? It would solve so many decorating problems! LOL). What do we think? Better, right? Ad Lissa, you were totally correct about the fireplace wall being a different color. I was cleaning the walls today and noticed the difference at the corner. I can't believe I've never noticed that before. It is just a shade darker. So what to do with the fireplace? And this huge blank wall behind the couch? And the train table will be brought down to the basement when DH gets home, promise! Do you think I should seek out a square ottoman/coffee table type thing? What about an area rug? New seating area. Fireplace is to left, not visible. I moved the toybox and hung the painting on the wall. View with fireplace and curio cabinet: Chair seating area in front of window. I realize this is dark. My iphone does not have a flash. Thanks for the kind words, our place is still in progress but we love it so far. I love having the mudroom bench! The paint color used in all the rooms is SW #7533 Khaki Shade. The laundry room is SW #7532 Urban Putty one shade lighter than the khaki shade. Your home has great potential with just some paint and furniture arranging. I do not think drapes to the ceiling would work, that would draw your eye up to the height of the room. I like what you have on the dining window but you could also use 2 simple roman shades on the dining window to add some texture and color. If you use a more neutral colored curtain panel on the sliding door with your current rod that would look nice. Try getting panels that blend with the paint color you choose. I love your fireplace and armoire is it possible to use the armoire for the tv instead of the table its on? I also have a westie she seems to get in my photos also :) If you put a large area rug down and pull the furniture away from the wall and arrange it around the fireplace that will ground the space. Try putting the couch across from the fireplace and a chair on each side and the Ottoman as a coffee table with a tray and books on it. Add a nice neutral area rug. Put one of the chairs where the tv is and the other facing the sliding door. I think the large wall hanging might look nice in the dining area. If Otis is planning on buying ready made panels they would have to be long enough to go up on top of the board and still touch the floor. (They would be rod pocket panels). I wouldn't even go to the trouble of picking out the stitch lines for the rod pocket, but just gather the panels by hand and staple on top of the board. (As long as there isn't a 2 story balcony that you can look down on top of the boards - you don't have to be terribly picky about how the top looks.) This is just an easy suggestion for this window configuration. I do think that 2 panels will be needed for a nice full drapery on each window. You can use iron on tape or pins to keep the drapes together and then hide that join in the folds when you dress it out. I know how to sew and of course I would do them in a more professional manner. It just depends on a person's budget as to whether they can afford custom window treatments or if they need to make them or do something creative with ready mades! You can also use pinch pleat panels on a board and hang the drapery pins from screw eyes inserted on the 3/4" front lip of the board. I have drapes made like this in my own home. I've never posted a photo on this site but I will try to take a photo tomorrow and post it.

I would do a blue linen for drapes I am rarely a lover of patterened drapes they tend to make other choices more difficult and wrinkles need to be ironed out before hanging and honestly never get wrinkled once the drapes are hung.My other suggestion you probably will not like but I would remove those shelves and hang the TV there and adda great piece of art above the FP. Those flowered pillows are not working for me but I do like the pink in them in that space so maybe just find a pillow that works better with the rug and those are a good example of how the more print you have going on the harder to make them work.Maybe a plain darker pink for the chairs and a vase with pink flowers

I think what she has is decorative traverse rods. My Mom had some similar to that years ago. I didn't know they were available again. They make so much more sense than ones that you have to open and close by hand.

These dont' have the attached rings like my Mom's did.

You are correct. The traverse rod is the simple one purchased from joann fabrics and is mounted independently of the wooden rod (purchased from linens n things).

The sheers are under the drapes and but when I open them, a few inches on each side is still visible (I wanted it that way).

Hi

One more little query. When the drapes are open, is the traverse rod visible? IIRC, with my previous traverse rods, there were 2 arms that slide apart to open the sheers and the ugly traverse rod was visible ( or in my case I had the swags, jabots and all of that fussy stuff )
