Just at first glance I think you may have too much furniture in the room. Is there any way you can get the leather sofas(2nd pic) away from the walls and in some kind of "L" shape in the middle of the room? First, I would take out all the furniture out of the room, even the TV and start "placing" the furniture, etc. Not sure where the TV should go so maybe others will chime in with more help :) It is a very pretty room with all those windows!

I'm just a lurker and can't help, other than to say it looks like you have good "bones" to work with.

I don't think you have too much furniture--too few pieces will make the room seem barren and cold. It's a big room--you can probably get a couple of seating areas set up.

I'd pull that sofa out from the wall--furniture doesn't need to be smack up against the perimeter. You could place it a decent viewing distance away from the TV, but parallel to it (so that the sofa is also angled) and then put a sofa table or some sort of chest behind it. You can pull the loveseat a bit closer too, I think, so that the TV the sofa and the loveseat form one seating area.

Then make another seating area with chairs and a table.

You could even put a sofa table behind the leather sofa and then the green velvet one behind that, if you've got room.

Thanks for all the input!!! The windows are lovely, and the ones out to the deck are westward so it gets a lot of light, which I love.

It is not evident from the photos, but the sofa is not up against the wall. I left a small corridor behind it to walk over to train table, and the decorative cabinet. I was thinking a console table behind it would help anchor it.

I don't think there is quite enough room to try to put the green sofa in there too, but I will try angling it towards the TV as suggested. It is probably hard to tell, but the sofa and loveseat are centered on the fireplace, not the TV.

What about paint? Any suggestions? Also, what about that huge blank wall behind the couch? Any fireplace suggestions? I hate the brass doors, but we have to live with it for now.

I set up an appt with Smith and Noble next week, so they are coming out to give me some bids for window coverings.

I like the color on the fireplace wall, not so much the color on the wall with the chairs.

I'd turn the couch and loveseat so that the couch faces the fireplace, with the loveseat forming an L with that. I would have the loveseat on the side where the french doors/chairs are now. Move the TV into the other corner by the fireplace, angled as you have it now.

Use the current upholstered chairs to create a seating area in front of the windows, but don't push them so close together. If there is room, I'd move the train table to the corner where the current curio cabinet resides and put the curio in the corner where you currently have the picture leaning against the wall.

I'd like to see that picture hung somewhere, possible on the wall it's leaning against and take the large orange poster and put it over the fireplace. Then, use reds and oranges from those two pictures as your accent colors.

I can see drapes made in a color similar to your chairs, with valances over them made from the colors in the pictures. If you put a throw on the couch with colors that combine the color in the chairs with the colors in the drapes, I think it would tie it all together.

BTW, I love the baby pics above the fireplace and they would look nice on the wall next the french doors (above where the tv is now), especially if you put a couple of dark wood display shelves there for things like the yankee candle and vases.

Oh, and I must NOT forget...the tiny chair is adorable and would look really cute next to the train table in the corner. I assume a small child drags that out to "watch TV with dad"?

Lissa--wonderful detailed post, thank you so much! The only thing I'm confused on is that the paint color is the same on all walls, so it must just be the lighting that makes it look different?

The train table will be gone from the room anyway...it just has not yet been brought down to the basement since Santa brought it. :)

Is there a solid wall across from the fireplace? If so, I would hang the tv there, have the couch and loveseat parallel to each other and perpendicular to the fireplace and tv with the two chairs angled in front and slightly to the sides of the fireplace. DH could lie comfortably on the couch to watch the tv, but it would also work when you have people visiting. Makes a great conversation area, too. I also like the idea of a table behind the couch.

I love the baby pics and the little chair and ottoman are SO cute. Someday, grandbabies will be loving them as well!

That is the way I had it arranged prior to this set-up. I really liked it, except for the fact that it was akward to always have to sit sideways to watch the TV, or sit in the chair apart from DH, KWIM? Plus, the TV was lost on the huge blank wall.

Thanks for the compliments on the baby pics. Good idea to save the chair for grandbabies. I'm a person who gets rid of everything, but i like the idea of saving the chair & ottoman.

So my 4 year old and I rearranged this morning, and I like it! The only tricky part will be running the cable over the fireplace somehow, but I'll let DH worry about that. (Why can't somebody invent wireless cable/satellite? It would solve so many decorating problems! LOL).

What do we think? Better, right? Ad Lissa, you were totally correct about the fireplace wall being a different color. I was cleaning the walls today and noticed the difference at the corner. I can't believe I've never noticed that before. It is just a shade darker.

One of my grandson's is four and loves his train and spends hours with it. Do you really have to take it downstairs? I think if this is the room where you watch tv and hang out, he should have his entertainment too (do I sound like a pleading Grandma? LOL). Is it possible to find some other type of storage for it when it isn't in use or move it to another spot in the room?

Natesgram-love your username. You are so sweet to think about my son! I probably can move it over to the corner next to the chairs...it will just make the chair seating area tighter. He and his sister spend hours down in the basement playing together, so if we do move it, it isn't like I'm banishing him to the dungeon. ;-) I'm sure my DH will have an opinion, so perhaps I'll defer to him. Or maybe I'll just leave it as my coffee table for the time being. Good place to put drinks, and it is indicative of my life with 2 small kiddos running amok. ;-)

Beautiful room and the transformation is fabulous! The 2 chairs are perfect for their new location. As for the wall behind the couch, perhaps a narrow and long console table with a large picture above it and sconces on either side would help.
Your room is lovely. I envy the amount of space you have!

Your wall color is really very pretty. I think what would warm everything up and make you feel more comfortable is putting in an area rug when you get the drapes up. If you moved the TV out of the corner and closer to the fireplace it would help too.

There's a lot of wall space in that room as well as a lot of ceiling, which you might try doing in a sofer version of the wall color. And then you have all that light colored carpeting. With things spread out and pushed too close to the walls it leaves it barren looking.

Wish you had two of those tall curio cabinets. You could move them to the wall behind the chairs flanking each side of that double door. (After you've moved the TV out of the corner.) But pictures/paintings hung there would achieve the same affect.

One inexpensive way to solve the big wall behind the sofa and create more warmth, find a quilt (doesn't have to be country look) or inexpensive rug to hang on the wall. Covers lots of space and easier on the budget!

I like what you did! Your 4 year old must be a great design consultant-teehee! As for the huge wall, I'd save my pennies and cover the entire expanse with bookshelves at some point.

as for wireless...Sony now has a wireless flat screen tv. The media box can be put anywhere. I REALLY want it, but it is still a little (?) too expensive-maybe next year. What a great difference that will make for all of us when it comes to placing televisions!
