The tibacks are a new one for me! I have seen knobs that tietop drapes can hang from as another option. I would think you still would be able to use a rod, if you wanted to. The rod would butt up against the wall a little and I would pull each drape to one side. The color or pattern is up to you. You could use a creamy white or any color really. Is there an accent color you can use?

I'd prefer to see rosettes to hang the drapes over the tiebacks, but I agree with kmcg85 that you can also use a rod butted up against the side wall. A friend of mine did this, by cutting a regular rod in half and using a half for each window--mounting it from the side wall. I wish I had a pic to show exactly how it was done, but it was very nice. Then you could use the tie backs on the outer sides as they are more commonly used to pull them back.

I'm a new member and I own a drapery design business and wanted to offer an idea! I like the photo that was posted by valinsv. I would suggest that you mount the drapes on lumber at the top of the wall (either gathered as in the photo above) or pinch pleated. I would extend the boards so that they go closer to your fireplace and hang a jabot on each end of board next to the fireplace. Make the long point of the jabot hit at about the top of that first light switch plate on the right window. The jabots would be mounted under the panels and would help fill that wall space beside the f.p. next to the windows and make the area look more unifed and balanced. You have such limited space in the corners that I wouldn't suggest mounting these on poles because even a small end cap for a finial would look very smushed!

OMG. That's your inspiration pic?? They look like meathooks hung like that. They are too lightweight and skimpy for use with heavy drapes like that.

I would go with a doorknob look with curtains with loops. The look would fit your casual living, urban elegance feel that the room seems to have now.

You can just use a regular curtain rod. I did this with a window that hits right up to a corner. You just get a rod where you can remove the finial and use the plain end against the wall and keep the finial on the open end.

Or, buy one larger telescoping rod and pull it apart. Use one piece on each window. You don't have to "saw one in half". This will work if the rods are covered by curtains and not hung with loops or rings, since one piece will be just a tiny bit less in diameter. This slight difference will not be noticed if they are covered. If you are using rings or loops, then yes, saw one in half.

I know you guys! I'm not in love with the "ispiration pic" at all and it really reminds me of something you might see in a barn. But my creativity level is ZERO so when I couldn't hang a rod there without the rod cap making the drape gap away from the wall... that's about where my ideas stopped.

Downsy, it shames me to say this but I don't even know what a jabot is. Also, If I were to attatch the drapes to lumber how would I launder them?

If it helps I would like to use very basic, solid drapes. No busy fancy stuff. Here are two options I'm considering. This one in either the desert or cream.

otis - DO NOT hang your head in shame. Your inspiration pic was a good jumping off point and was NOT stupid. Now you can get suggestions to improve your original idea. I am not good at decorating, which is why I hang out around here - so I don't have any brilliant ideas. I just want to encourage you that you are off to a great start and have the beginnings of a beautiful room. :)

Otis, Well I have to say I wouldn't recommend laundering drapes!!! The idea I'm envisioning would be something that you could do if you are creative and able to sew. Otherwise it would be something better left to a professional drapery fabricator. If you want to buy ready made panels as in your above post - you will probably need at least 2 widths per window to have the proper fullness to drape across the window. If you can't sew - don't do the jabots. Just do as the inspiration photo posted above - which also looks to me to be hung on lumber. Cut your lumber (1x4) a little wider than the width of the windows (frame to frame) and angle one end - which would be the leading edge end that is placed near the f.p. The other end would be left with the 90 degree corner which would be your return end. I would cover the lumber with lining fabric for a nice finish. Then begin hand gathering your panels onto the top of the board including the angled end and the 90 degree corner end and staple. You can staple up as high as needed to get the correct finished length.

I noticed in your photo a small thing on your wall above the right window. Is that a security sensor? You probably can't cover that up and will have to mount the boards at the top of your window frames.

Then buy some lovely tassel tie backs and drape the panels back.

I am also interested in this answer as I have a similar problem as Otis P . Can you clarify, the type of panels you are referring to in your post. Are they just rod pocket types or pinch pleats? I am a little lost understanding the hand gathereing and stapling part.

As for the fabric, I would move the wall in a more informal direction, going for a horizonal stripe/plaid that blends with the walls.

Ignore the style and look at the plaid on this link, from JCPenney. I'm pretty sure this fabric is available in straight panels.

If Otis is planning on buying ready made panels they would have to be long enough to go up on top of the board and still touch the floor. (They would be rod pocket panels). I wouldn't even go to the trouble of picking out the stitch lines for the rod pocket, but just gather the panels by hand and staple on top of the board. (As long as there isn't a 2 story balcony that you can look down on top of the boards - you don't have to be terribly picky about how the top looks.)

This is just an easy suggestion for this window configuration. I do think that 2 panels will be needed for a nice full drapery on each window. You can use iron on tape or pins to keep the drapes together and then hide that join in the folds when you dress it out.

I know how to sew and of course I would do them in a more professional manner. It just depends on a person's budget as to whether they can afford custom window treatments or if they need to make them or do something creative with ready mades!

You can also use pinch pleat panels on a board and hang the drapery pins from screw eyes inserted on the 3/4" front lip of the board. I have drapes made like this in my own home. I've never posted a photo on this site but I will try to take a photo tomorrow and post it.

I like the first drape you posted in dessert. The other colors seem off to me. Of course that could be my moniter.

Or you could attach them to a board and attach the board to the wall similar to this topper. Only you'd probably want to pleat your panels as you attached them to the board.

If you really like the look of a rod, you could always use a wooden closet dowel rod with just the one finial on each and the other side of the dowel attached to the wall with a wooden closet dowel bracket that you typically see in white plastic, but if you ask most big boxes carry them in wood too. Some carry a brass version also.

Not sure how much the purchase has to be but I have gotten free rods each time I have ordered and their drapes are lined and weighted, great buy. I don't work there and I don't even know anyone prior to who ordered from them but I am satisfied with what I have purchased but also satisfied with what I get from JCPenneys, so just be sure what you are/are not willing to accept because both vendors have various prices and qualities.

Do you also have some kind of alarm or sensor mounted on the wall on the right side of the right window? Do the drapes have to clear that as well?

I would mount a board and attach pleated panels with velcro. Then tie them back as valinsv suggested in her post.

Does the window stop at walls on either side? Can you use one of those things that swivels back and forth and mount it to the adjacent wall? Could you not run the pole into that wall and attach it somehow? I think there has to be a carpenter out there who can come up with a way to put a regular rod? If one side of the window is not jamb up to the wall, could you pull the drapes all to that side. You can attach the rod as regularly but not use the finial?

I had a similar situation in a bedroom, where the drapery rod ran right up to the wall I used a closet pole holder mounted on the wall to hold that end of the rod.

Not to be too difficult, but why not install toppers or valences, and then use Roman shades or bamboo blinds or even roller blinds made of fabric. Those bright white blinds don't add anything.

Do you plan on opening the blinds/curtains or are they always shut?

Thank you everyone for all the ideas and tips! Over the right window is a motion sensor but it can be moved. I do own a sewing machine and I can sew, though I wouldn't really say I'm good at it. I plan to check out some fabrics this weekend. I think I will use the lumber idea. It seems to offer the results I'm going for and also to be most cost effective. Thanks again everyone!
