SW and Halloween Costume

Had to share a pic of DD's Halloween Costume that I just finished. I didn't have just the right shade of aqua in any of my acrylic paints so I hit the basement and rummaged around my old SW Color To Go's. I picked an old color called Northern Lights from the old SW Martha Stewart line for the dress, bow and purse body and a CTG in BM San Antonio Gray for the purse hadle and button:

OMG that is brilliant! I saw that idea somewhere (magazine?) and tried to convince my 10 y.o. DD but... no dice. Adorable!

LOL, no-no-no, I'm too old for it. Did you see the one of the dragons as in "How to Train Your Dragon" animated movie? Those costumes showed a lot of talent. The father/parent had 4 kids and 3 of them with Spinal Muscular Atrophy. I used to have a friend from Louisiana. They seems to have lots of festivals that we don't have elsewhere. One such was the Rice Festival. You have a safe one Raven.

Tradition is that I lay the costumes out before I mail them . . . here they all are: Little Red Riding Hood Alice in Wonderland and The White Rabbit (Both red riding hood and Alice were chosen by DD) Oldest grand wanted to be a witch and her Mom decided that her one year old sister could be a black cat. Witch and the net at the top of the picture is the "cat" costume for the one year old (there is a tail and ears somewhere in the picture). The witch costume I made back in the 70s for DD. It is a new hat and broom. The stars are on the costume because that is where the holes were in the 35 year old costume! Oldest wanted to be a witch again and so did the two year old. I had the pattern from the original costume and so made the 2 year old a witch costume. Those stars are not because of holes but rather because her sister had stars! Which brings us up to this year and the Princess and the Mouse! I do enjoy it but I was most pleased that DGD could wear her mother's costume. Hopefully youngest will as well in a year or two. The other costume I made for DD was a clown costume which she wore for 4 years -- sadly, clowns are now bad . . .it was a cute costume and I still have it! Perhaps when HER children have children, clowns will be in again and they can wear their grandmother's old Halloween costume that their great grandmother made all those years ago! LOL!

Nice to see that I'm not the only one in the Halloween spirit :). Good luck! Tonight, I will be, *hopefully* going out with a couple of friends of mine for some Halloween themed karaoke and I will be dressing up as Winnie again. Since school starts in a few days (8/12) I’m not surprised that the stores are marketing the Fall holidays. Parents shopping with their children for back to school are the perfect groups to sell to. Craft stores, like Michaels, have to get Holiday merchandise on the floor early. There are still people who make craft items for gifts, Fall festivals and bazaars.

That is a very creative costume and refreshing from all the usual dancers, fairies and ballerinas you see at the age. Your DD looks so cute in it! Enjoy the stage where they want to still look "cute". I had a lovely poodle skirt I made for older DD when she was in a music recital several years ago. I tried to get younger DD to wear it as it was the right size this year, but she preferred the much cooler 60's girls to a cute 50's girl. Oh, well....

Reminds me of how much I loved playing with paper dolls when I was young. Do they still even make paper dolls?

Cute as a button! The costume of course, but even more the girl wearing it! Looks like it would work over a winter coat, which is often the issue here on Halloween.

Is it made with foamcore board? Can she sit in it?

I think you should send your little tale and the pix to SW - they would get a kick out of it!

Thank you! I can not tell you enough how much fun we had making this costume together! DS1 got done w/ his costume early and helped me w/ DD's and DS2's costumes. All of the kids each participated in the making of each of their costumes in some form or fashion. We had such a lovely, lazy laid back weekend crafting!

Let me just say that while I was drawing it out on the posterboard (I used posterboard w/ a grid on it) I kept thinking "I am so glad that I had an architect for a Dad!". The measurments were ridiculous for someone not very mathematically inclined but thank heaven for a T square!

After cutting it out and painting it I cut thin foam board to support the top of the top (does that make sense?) and support the top of the skirt. I sandwiched elastic straps between the posterboard and foam board and hot glued the foam board onto the back of the top and skirt. I ran a bead of hot glue onto the bottom of the hairbow and attached a headband. I cut out the tabs and hot glued them onto the costume and reinforced w/ duct tape.

There is one house on our route that rewards children who have creative, innovative costumes that kids come up w/ on their own. My kids always make their house one of the last houses on their route and talk about that house all day long in anticipation.

She carried that little purse all night long just like in the picture w/ her pumpkin in the other hand!

I got the idea from the magazine Family Fun put out by Disney.

Here is our Bed Bug - he cut out the legs and made his sign:

And our Mad Scientist. This is the first year that DS1 totally gets the whole 'come up w/ an idea and execute it on your own' costume. He even had his Daddy watch Martha Stewart Halloween episodes to show him some ideas. He kept drinking his test tubes of orange drink and rootbeer all night! He even got to meet a real scientist/ chemist on his route who loved his costume and took a pic for his work. That was great - it really validated DS1's hard work and research!:
