Comments (13)Oh my gosh. . . you guys are great!! Justgottabeme, I've added pictures of the floor and shower walls, but my thinking right now is that the whole shower stall will come down to the studs and be rebuilt so the issue will be to find tiles for the "all new" shower that will work with the existing floor. Love the idea for the trim in the shower. . .I used some Sonoma glass in my kitchen. . .will check out what they might have. And, for you and Les, I will re-think the mirror (loved the link!!)...I just got really excited about getting another electrical outlet, but I suppose I could have them pull something down through the wall on the right or I suppose I could have a new mirror cut with cutouts for the outlet. . .hmmmm). Dianalo, are you saying a 36"x36" single piece of tile for the floor?? And definnitely not a solid countertop!! Les, the colors you recommended are drool worthy and will serve as my springboard!! I will definitely re-think the mirror. Re: the lights, I had "swag" lights in another( 70s) house and had more than one weak-kneed moment banging them into the mirror when I cleaned the mirror (I am a "spatter" in the bathroom). I do love the ones you linked however!! Another "re-think" issue!! Gsciencechick, thanks for the link...I'll check it out. Anne, I think your son was very lucky to be able to re-use his old tile. Unfortunately, I don't think that will be the case with mine. Again, I thank you all so very much for the time you took to think about solutions/ideas and respond. It will probably be at least a month or so before this is all over with, but I WILL provide pictures of the final results!! GWers are the greatest!!...See Morehelp finalize color scheme? lots of pix
Comments (21)I really do appreciate everyone's feedback. I am trying to fully understand them so I can incorporate it or correct my design. Sorry, I meant "UNLIKE many of our friends" (about the finished basement familyrooms). Also, yup, that monster brick fireplace is staying. It is structurally part of the house, so much that the flooring joists changes direction, depending on where it touches the fireplace. Also, I plan to use the area next to the kitchen (back of the peninsula) as a keeping room, since EVERYONE who comes over hangs out in my kitchen area. No one ever goes into my spacious livingroom (opposite corner of my kitchen), I will flip them and put the diningroom there. So I will need the 2 stools eating peninsula. I tried out the shallow U-shape, but I like the fact that the peninsula is a barrier for me so that people do not come into my cooking area. People can easily go to the sink/fridge, but I like having my own space in the cooktop area. Sorry that I couldn't add any ceiling moldings or valances or glaze on the painted cabinets w/ my design software. Rhome410/marcolo: Can you please help me understand your feedback: "arrangement around the window looks a little forced"? Also: "keep the range area one color, and not pick up that colorway again on that run. You could try going back to wood or whatever once your turn the corner on the left". - So sorry, but I am not sure which left. Should I keep it all in warm cherry, even peninsula? On the color part: I wanted to break up the monotony of just the warm cherry and to bring a focal to the windows. My 42" copper hood is gorgeous, but I think it ranks below the windows. So I thought to milk paint it blue/grey like the island in the marble backsplash inspiration. I don't think I want the cabinets any lighter. Could I get the lightness from the daytime light (from windows) and lots of recessed lights/pendants/undercab lighting? Or should I have the 3 uppercabs (on sink wall/flanking hood) painted also (see sink inspiration picture)? So would the sink/DW/dishes jut-out be fine WITHOUT the same color valance/awning/corbels, etc, and just leave the windows as in and just have the painted bottom 3 cabinets? And not paint the peninsula also? I thought to paint the peninsula because I haven't love any butcher block on stain cabinets. Like the sink inspiration picture, for more contrast, I can put marble on the sink countertop (and on the hood backsplash). For left DW and cooktop area, I can put ink-dark-stained butcherblock. Or am I missing it entirely? The 2 DWs will be paneled: the left one will be cherry, and the right one will be milk paint. I will try to make the sink cabinets as 3 drawers, same as the 3-drawer dishes cabinets. Christine40: I love your kitchen! CEFreeman: do you own Barker Cabinets? I thought I saw your login name on their Google Review. How do you like Barker Cabs? The more I read about them, the more excited I am about using them for my kitchen. Mama_goose: my sweet darling husband does not seem to notice his strength or may be a bit clumsy, as he often drops big stuff onto my soft pine floor, leaving lots of dents/indentations. Again, thank you very much for your help. I really appreciate it. Amanda...See Morewall shelves in bathroom?
Comments (6)OK. I understand. Budget makeovers are a challenge. Believe me I know. I would look a decorating magazines, and HGTV.com Rate My Room and ApartmentTherapy.com for examples of budget makeovers. Even if you can only do a little at a time you still need an overall plan - a vision. Silk flowers and beads are going to collect dust and look tired after a while. I would go for a clean, spa-like look. Maybe put ceramic or mirror tiles glued around the mirror. You can get odd lot tiles at places like ReStore and H.O.B.O. for next to nothing. Since the blue sink, counter and vanity must stay as is, you need to pick a color that will work with the light blue. I do not think purple and yellow will be the best choice with the light blue. Is there a look or feel you are going for? A beach theme with the purple, yellow and blue? A shabby chic look. I know you said "glam" but I do not think you can carry off a 1930's Hollywood glam look, with this space on such a small budget. With the blue sink you could do a Shabby chic look and maybe put white beadboard over the vanity. Paint the walls creamy Ivory. Add light colored, grayed out pastel towels, with lace like borders. Use mirror tiles around the mirror. Pictures for the walls and a few vintage finds from the thrift store should pull it together and you'll have fun shopping the thrift stores. Create some of the things yourself, like find a picture frame for fifty cents at Goodwill, and then glue seashells on it, or wrap it with ribbon. Frame some vintage finds like old keys. Just some ideas to use as a starting point to come up with your own. Or you could stick with deep warm beige and chocolate colors with the blue sink and go for a serene spa-like look. You can do a lot with just paint. Paint the vanity chocolate. Use earthy tiles around the mirror. Use picture frames to frame things found in nature, like leaves or dried flowers. Get some brown and blue pattern towels. That color combo is very popular right now at stores. Find some inspiration pictures of bathrooms decorated like your dream bathroom and noodle for cheaper ways of doing the look. Don't forget to check the 'Ooops' paint bin at you local hardware store or Home Depot. It's $5/gal or $1/gal if it has been opened and tampered with. You can get lighting fixtures at ReStore for a couple of bucks and paint them, A few posters here have painted lighting fixtures and they came out great looking. Maybe you can even make you roman shades or curtains from end of bolt leftover fabric that they sell for a buck. Comments (29)Zaz and Beth, I finally have some samples on my floor to look at (from the Tile Shop) and that's helpful, but it's a pain in the b*** to figure out what samples to order and from whom to order them - and expensive too! I could probably order an equal number of interesting samples from Merola/Home Depot, not to mention the additional ideas you've both now given me, but at some point I need to stop. Even though I feel I've 'narrowed' my focus to something with blue and/or patterned-moroccan-style, there are still so many options and resources to look at. I do like all the additional examples you gave me, Beth. Is EliteTile considered a good quality resource? I have felt comfortable having a retail face to consult with (Tile Shop and Home Depot) but if you and Zaz and others with more experience feel it can be ok to order from a place like Wayfair and this brand of tile, then I feel more confident about that. Both Tile Shop and HD have nice options too, but I've been a bit frustrated that I haven't been able to see an actual sample of a large-size cobalt option .... and the nice on sale lantern blue one is beautiful. What a price, too!! Weirdly, as I look more closely at the Wayfair/EliteTile Moroccan tiles, I'm seeing several that are the exact same patterns that Merola/HomeDepot offer. Do either of you know anything about this? I'd kind of like to add pictures of the samples I have from Tile Shop to see what you both think, but it might need to wait until tomorrow since this day is over and I'm beat. (Also, have other things in addition to tile shopping which I'm sure you both can relate to.) I am grateful to have both of you to converse with on this. Feel more comfortable....See Moreles917
