Oh I love those tiles! In my opinion they are classic. As for being able to match or coordinate something for the shower, it would really help to see the shower floor area. I know bathrooms can be hard to photograph, but without knowing just how they'll relate it each other it's hard to suggest what might work.
As for removing the large mirror have you thought of how much light it reflects that you'll lose once it's gone? I would suggest at least thinking of hanging individual framed mirrors over the full wall mirror and have the best of both worlds.

I'd go for the off white in your mosaic and base the rest on that. I think I'd do a one piece floor for the shower rather than try to connect with the mosaics. It will also be easier to clean than one with grout.

If the rest of the main colors were working off the off white (such as wall tiles, window treatment and counter), then you can add the colors you mentioned above to the scheme as paint, artwork and accessories. I'd try not to do a lot in the way of a pattern anywhere, but also would never do a solid countertop. There has to be some variation in it or every smudge or water drop would show.

FWIW - we had the same mosaics on our floor only they were in a hideous mustard yellow blend. You got a lot luckier than we did, but ours are recently tossed and the new floor is a few weeks away!

See the peanut butter (darkest) tile in the floor? I would use that for the wall color. Paint out all the trim and the cabinets in a warm white to compliment the lightest tile in the flooring.

I would not replace the single mirror with a couple of mirrors. I would use moulding to frame it out, painted to match all the other trim in the space.

For the shower, I think you should be able to find small glass tiles in colors similar to the floor that would work as a band of trim about 2/3 - 3/4 of the way up the shower walls or so, perhaps 4 or 5 tiles tall, to work with larger field tile in the second to the lightest color of the floor tile.

As for the bulkhead, I actually like them as well in many situations, so I can understand you not removing it. I think using pot lights is fine, but perhaps you are missing an opportunity for a decorative element. I am also not sure what you mean about âÂÂbanging them into the mirror/wallâÂÂ. Why would you be touching them, except to clean them occasionally?

Anyway, you might consider something like this as an alternative to pot lights. I think it has a 60âÂÂs vibe, and would work with your colors:

Then for your towels and accessories, combine items of red and an olive green. Fabulous with the dark tan (peanut butter) walls.

I like the shutters as well. I am wondering if the insets were slipped in before the bottom rails of the shutters were added. I could see a nice woven wood shade in there as an alternative, tho.

Check out Retrorenovation.com. She has many resources for vintage tile, so you may actually be able to get the tile that matches your current floor so you can use it in the shower. I've seen so many there, but I am not sure if I've seen your exact pattern.

BTW, we updated our bathroom walls with a texture paint until someday we can do a larger renovation. We used a "sand" texture and then followed with coats of clearcoat poly, which is recommended for high-traffic areas.

My son has similar tile in his master bath. When we took out the tub to put in a shower, we had to have some of the floor tiles cut out. Also, some of the tiles were loose due to almost 50 years of water dripping into the corners as the person got out of the shower. The plumbers, who were inexperienced DIYers for part of the remodel (not much work here, so they were willing to do a few extras for us and charged us very little), were able to cut the necessary tiles and reattach those needed. It all looks pretty good. DS will get the tile redone if/when he has his entry retiled. A small tile job is normally a little pricey, since it requires multiple trips, so he thought it would be cheaper to wait and get it done all at once.

Justgottabeme, I've added pictures of the floor and shower walls, but my thinking right now is that the whole shower stall will come down to the studs and be rebuilt so the issue will be to find tiles for the "all new" shower that will work with the existing floor. Love the idea for the trim in the shower. . .I used some Sonoma glass in my kitchen. . .will check out what they might have.

And, for you and Les, I will re-think the mirror (loved the link!!)...I just got really excited about getting another electrical outlet, but I suppose I could have them pull something down through the wall on the right or I suppose I could have a new mirror cut with cutouts for the outlet. . .hmmmm).

Dianalo, are you saying a 36"x36" single piece of tile for the floor?? And definnitely not a solid countertop!!

Les, the colors you recommended are drool worthy and will serve as my springboard!! I will definitely re-think the mirror. Re: the lights, I had "swag" lights in another( 70s) house and had more than one weak-kneed moment banging them into the mirror when I cleaned the mirror (I am a "spatter" in the bathroom). I do love the ones you linked however!! Another "re-think" issue!!

Anne, I think your son was very lucky to be able to re-use his old tile. Unfortunately, I don't think that will be the case with mine.

I would consider keeping a large frameless mirror in the bathroom. They act more as a room expander rather than a decorative mirror, but sometimes in a small or narrowish bath that is quite effective. These two rather old fashioned (1969) baths would seem quite a bit smaller without them:

Thanks so much for posting more pictures of your shower. If I would have been thinking I'd have guessed what your shower looked like by the era your home was built. Very typical neat shower. I love the look, but wondering if you can gain some square footage from another room to enlarge it since you'll ripping out to the studs? With added shower heads I would think you'd want more room to move around. I hope you can find the same tile for the floor at the site gsciencechick posted. That would be awesome!

Country Living magazine featured a budget bathroom redo that was based on keeping a mosaic tile floor like yours.

I think you could get a new shower floor tile that works with the mosaic and it would look just fine. Our shower floors always were a non-slip variation of the shower walls, not the bathroom floor.

Did a quick trip to one of the local tile houses and I'm discouraged not to find more of a match. . .but encouraged at the possibilities that will blend and maybe add a little pizazz!!

Palimpsest and awmo3...already pretty sure the mirror will stay (or perhaps a same size new one with and outlet opening).

Awm03. . .I would almost swear the floor in the Country Living article was exactly the same as mine, but IRL mine doesn't have any grey in it.
