Oh, and here's a pic of our granite and kitchen cabinets. Our wood floors will (95% sure) be stained Jacobean.

cbeth, I too love gray and was concerned about our north facing living room. I ended up buying a gray with just a hint of lavender in it to warm it up a little; so far I love it, can't see any obvious lavender at all in it. Also have it in south facing kitchen, like that too.

I have Comfort Gray in several rooms in my house and I really like that color. Different lighting reflects different shades in that color (gray/blue/green).

I would be sure that it blends with your lovely granite, though. Paint some poster or foam board and place it around in different rooms to see what you think.

Choosing a darker color for the dining room sounds great.

I'm not familiar with cooler gray colors but wanted to say that I love your ivory cabinets with that gorgeous granite!

I love the cabinet color you've chosen and your granite! I'm not the best person to comment, but I DO speak fluent SW, so I'll venture an opinion.

First, is your property country (mature trees in back) or suburban (clear cut, view of nieghbour etc) I have a southern exposure for my LR but trees mean little direct light, and much of it has a weird (to me) greenish tinge after reflecting off trees. Something to consider.
Second, are you in a northern or southern area? That will also affect the quality of light in your windows.

Also, your cabinets and granite seem quite warm toned in the photo--definitely use them to coordinate your color! My impression looking at them is that Silver Strand, which I've tested, wouldn't work at all. Minful Gray might work but I'd be inclined to look at Analytical Gray 7051, Accessible Beige 7036 or Aloof Gray 6197 in addition to Comfort Gray.

"cold" and "sterile" is also affected by texture.

Think fluffy white sheepskin versus white high-gloss tiles on a floor.
Or think grey velvet versus grey concrete.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I will definitely keep them in mind as I pick out my paint samples. I love the granite too, so I really want the paint to work well with it.

Baroo2u- We are in a neighborhood setting, but our backyard faces out to common area (hills/woods). Luckily, the trees aren't close enough to cast a green tint. We aren't in the deep south, but I'd still consider it to be south (TN).

Since you haven't painted yet, I'll venture another opinion. I don't envision gray working well in this room. I'd much prefer a color along the lines of Farrow and Ball Light Gray (which isn't gray, to my eye, despite the name). If your SW paint person has a good eye, you may be able to come close, or find a ready made SW color that is in the same "neighborhood." Anyway, it may be worth a sample board trial, even if you do ultimately go with a gray.

Cbeth85- Just curious- what color did you decide on? I am also in the South, a new build, concrete stained floors and want to paint our house using a light gray. I have had a tough time deciding on our paint color. My kitchen cabinets will be black.

I used a very light grey in a lot of my house...SW Lattice. It isn't on their cards...but they know it and have the formula. Our master bath is north facing, and it looks fine in there.
