cable TV ground wire

Thanks for all the useful information. It is very much appreciated. For starters, I know nothing about electricity and therefore probably should be barred from owning a house.

Since, however, I do own one, my questions are pretty basic. I'm asking in this forum because the "children" at the big box store know as little as I do, yet they sell electical equipment.

Having said all that, I'm faced with a brand-new dilemma. Why is there a ground wire on my new cable TV RG6 wire?

What am I supposed to ground it to? Is it beneficial or unnecessary? For what reasons?

Does anyone have an answer for a clueless homeowner?

Thanks in advance.
