running another line from phone junction box for dsl, pic

I'm going to switch to Verizon DSL but the room with the computer doesn't have a phone jack. However, the phone junction box is in the basement, directly below the room with the computer. As you can see from the pic below, I have room on the junction box to run another cable.

I don't want to install another phone jack in the wall, I just want to be able to run a phone cable from the junction box to the dsl router upstairs. How do I do this? Do I use cat 5 cable or phone cable? Can I just hook the wire to the junction box and then run it upstairs to the modem?

you will need a filter on the phone lines as well.

you want the line going to the DSL modem to be unfiltered. then from teh filter feed your block. you can use cat5, or regular phone to the modem, though i usually use cat 5 simply because i have it. if you are not going to install a jack, you need to have the tool to put a RJ11 on teh end. cat5 cables come with a RJ45 which is 8 pin and won't fit in a RJ11 4/6 pin socket.

Shucks man, all I can do on these posts today is agree with Davidandkasie but, he's right.

You could put a jack right next to the terminal strip in your picture. Then you could run a pre-manufactured 10 or 20 foot extension (sold at Walmart or Radioshack or even Big Lots). Better yet, you could mount a wireless router right there too and put a wireless NIC on your computer in a USB port and not run any wire. You'll be so close to the unit (being in the room overhead) there will be no real drop in signal. The cool thing is, if you decide to move the computer somewhere else in the house, nothing to do extra. You can also add more computers with no wiring needed. And yes, the wireless system would be secure....so now you have options!!! Good luck!!

By definition, a dry loop has no dial tone nor battery. It is a 'raw' copper pair. HOWEVER, many of the telco's don't do it this way any more, especially as far as DSL is concerned. They charge more for a dry loop implementation. Hence, they may TARIFF DSL 'dry-loop' service as something with battery and perhaps even dial tone, but it's not a dry loop after that. And assigning the line a number is not a surprise either. Where I used to work, it was standard to assign a number to a DSL dry loop. But it was a number you could not dial (1nn-xxxx). It was simply a place holder for the billing system.

Many many thanks for everyone's comments thus far. I replaced the suspect connector at the demarcation point with a simple twist cap as one poster mentioned. Really that should work :) Our phone lines *sound* fine. However our max dsl speed is still 500-600. Unfortunately, I just had an organ transplant and need the ability to work from home with a higher bitrate than that! I work at Pixar, so we deal with a lot of Gigs of image data, etc. Unfortunately the change in connector has no effect as many of you had suspected. Here is what we have done so far, if anyone has an additional idea, I'm all ears. Here is what we have done on our side, none of which showed an improvement 1. Removed all extra components from our network - unplugged and disabled the hub, hardware vpn box, airport leaving just linux box->dsl modem 2. Tried another phone jack with same configuration (this was done post each additional change just for completeness). Phone jack tested was installed 3 years ago at the time of purchase of the home, so new wiring, straight run to the demarcation point. 3. Removed all phones from the system - the only thing in the house using a phone line is the dsl modem 4. Installed dsl filter for the alarm system (previously was a locked box and I had been assured a filter had been installed, bastards) 5. Got a key from the alarm company, disabled the alarm system/disconnected it from the phone system completely So again, at this stage, there is NOTHING connected to the phone lines other than the modem->linuxbox 6. Removed questionable electrical connector connecting the five branch lines in the house, restripped wires, capped with a twist connector 7. Rewired the preferred outlet for the dsl modem as it too looked questionable / installed new RJ45 jack on the existing phone line. Still max speed of 500-600. We love our static IPs for both vpn and running a webserver, but we cannot live with this speed. Do you have any ideas on how to further pursue this? AT&T has been out to the house and said our phone lines were fine, DSL Extreme last said it must be the alarm. Since then, we've done the rewiring/replacement of suspect connectors AND disabled the alarm completely. Sincere thanks, susan, who doubts a punchdown block is going to change anything but is willing to try anything at this point!

As of right now, we are not using aluminum channel but I have not ruled it out for the UCL. The light rail trim is attached to the cabinets via 3/4" stock that extends 3" from the cabinet front. If I put plain strip lighting behind that, I'd have to go back another 1-2" to keep the trim from blocking the light and I'd rather not go back that far. Inspired LED recommended placing the strip lighting on the back side of the 3/4" light rail stock so it shines back at the backsplash to eliminate dots on the granite. I had wondered about that option myself so when they brought it up I figured I'd see what it looks like. In that position no one will see the plain strip unless they stick their head under the cabinets. If I don't like that we'll most likely use the channel for the UCL. That would bring the light down about to the level of the 3/4" stock so I could butt it right behind it. It would also give a cleaner look and protect the strip. However my primary motivation is to conserve energy so I'd prefer to avoid losing a bunch of light to the channel and diffuser. We will mount the LED to an aluminum strip for better heat dissipation if we don't use the channel. Even if we used channel on everything, it would still be much less (doing it ourselves) that any of the direct wire options. I think we have a solution for the desk area. The romex stub appears to be in the same stud cavity as a light switch on the wall behind it. My husband says if he takes out the light switch junction box, he can pull the romex that's connected to the switch out and into a replacement junction box. Then we can extend to the dimming transformer above the cabinets where it will be out of sight.

I think we all know that this OP is talking about either Cat5 or Cat5e, but for DSL speeds, it doesn't usually matter even if you use Cat6, so just saying CAT is fine with me ;) "the phone company is saying it is our in house wiring. They told me to get cat5" 1. The phone company probably didn't even specify the "e" because they were talking in more general terms. 2. As Ron said, the type of wire may not make that big of a difference, even if it is only regular telephone wire. 3. It is common now days to run Cat5e instead of telephone wire. 4. The method of running "CAT" wire is different than running telephone wire. Telephone wire was normally daisy-chained from outlet to outlet, and using anything from a quick twist and tape to splice it, to a bundle of wires in a loose wire nut. "CAT" wiring is done with individual runs to a central location, and much better connections. 5. I believe that what the telephone company is really trying to get the OP to do, is to run a new, undamaged/unspliced wire from the outside utility box, to the place where the modem will be plugged in. The reference by the phone company about Cat5 is a bit of a misconception because that is just what everybody uses now when they run direct lines instead of daisy-chained and spliced too many times, when it is more the direct line they are after. . I suspect that the phone company came out and tested the speed at the outside utility box, and could plainly see what type of wire was going into the house. Since it was red/green black/yellow, they know what type of wire it is, and how that type of wire is normally run.

Thanks for the help. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think I need filters as I will have naked DSL, no phone service.
Will I notice any difference in DSL quality/speed by using phone wire instead of CAT 5? I have spare phone cable already. I think the best way to do it is to run the wire upstairs and then hook it up to the router. I like the idea of hooking up a jack right by the junction box.

So if I use phone cable, I would use a short length just to connect the jack to the junction box and I would strip the cover off the cable to expose the wires, then connect the wires to the junction box? Then plug the other end of the short phone cable to a phone jack, then plug a long cable to the jack and run it upstairs?

ok, if no POTS then you don't need filters.

unless you have a high RFI in teh house or must run clsoe to electrical wiring, there will be no difference in CAT5 versus regular phone line. teh cables brings teh DSL to your home are MUCH longer and are mostly all CAT3 or less. except of course for any fiber inthe loop!

forgot to mention, i would bypass that block all together since you will have no other active phone devices. this way you don't end up with several branches running thru the house getting noise induced on them. if the DSL is marginal at your NID, this noise can realy cause grief.
