Slow DSL service.
Comments (29)My little netbook acts the way my PC used to. I turned it on and after it found the network I went to one of my son's several fabulous sites where he displays beautiful photos of birds. He is the most avid birder imaginable and he has become an excellent amateur photographer. He has an extremely expensive digital SLR camera, long distance scopes and lenses and macro lenses. He is also proficient in Adobe Photo Shop. I know his large pictures are fairly big files. They snapped onto the screen faster than I could look at them in a book by turning pages. I KNOW my PC is the problem. Knowing what is causing the slow downloads is enough to make me get past being annoyed. I will work on all the suggestions to speed up my Dell and stop cursing TDS for a slow DSL. Nancy...See Moredsl to fios
Comments (13)I loved Verizon fios I was one of the original test houses for the first installs of fios, this was at my previous home. I never had any problems or down time. There will be a battery backup system in your garage or somewhere. When power goes out the battery backup will keep the phone and Internet up for a period of time. It does regular self tests, when you need a new battery that is your responsibility. They provided a specific modem / router that the tech set up while doing the install. I don't know if this has changed. I would have gone with fios here but it is not available. I would say stop worrying about it the install goes pretty quickly and the tech will help you if you need it just ask them. It was an amazing experience being one of the original test houses. One day suddenly my Internet was down, I had a direct phone number to call if there were any problems. I called and with in about 20 minutes I had 4 trucks and a car of suits. It turned out an installer had accidentally disconnected me from the box down the street when he was hooking up some other person. It was quite an experience. I never had the tv just phone and Internet. Good luck!...See MoreTelephone DSL question
Comments (6)The DSL shares a line with a telephone so there is no additional wiring required. to install a DSL service. When you get the DSL modem and startup kit it will also have some DSL signal splitter filters in the kit. The DSL startup package contains a software CD for your computer and they tell you to install the software first. At the begining of the CD they have an audio/video tutorial on how to install the filters. The signal splitters are simply a small plastic block about the size of your thumb with a short wire coming out one end that has a telephone modular plug on it. On the opposite end of the signal splitter you will see two modular jacks molded into the splitter block. One is marked "Telephone" and the other is marked "DSL". You unplug the phone from the wall jack and plug the splitter in, then plug the phone wire into the "Telephone" jack on the splitter. You then take a telephone wire that has a modular plug on each end and plug one end into the "DSL" jack on the splitter and the other end is plugged into the telephone jack on your computer modem. The DSL kit comes with about 5 or 6 of the line splitters and you should install one at the wall plug for each telephone in your house. Takes about 30 seconds per phone to install the filters. The kit also contains a wall plug with a built in DSL filter for wall mounted phones. To install the wall plug you remove your existing wall plug and put the new plug in its place. This is a simple four wire color coded change out that can be done in 5 minutes or less....See MoreNo more phone jacks for land lines?
Comments (42)As an add on to this conversation regarding emergencies. Make sure your cell has reverse 911 (if available) for city/county emergencies. We lost many in fires who did not have this and got caught in fire storms and mud slides/flash floods. In these situations the danger was known, news reports gave information that the location was far enough away to give them some time for getting out, albeit a very short time. Emergency personnel going to so many homes was burdening the ability to get to all and in some cases not possible to do so. You need to sign up for reverse 911, registration should be for each phone. The use is for more than just natural devastations. Once the call/message is answered it won't repeat the information. Our city just started this last year due to the floods and fires. Most land lines already had the option. Check to see if you have this available, many cities are still working on activation. Also, somewhere in the last few years I remember having mobile phones connected to a main unit inhouse. Nothing worked when electric went out, so yes to the battery backup or the wonderful phone you found. I also took out the kitchen unit for tiling and it shut down the other connections. So make sure you don't mess with the main line, perhaps just cover it up with something that matches the backsplash and can be removed. Landlines are not available in my neighborhood area either, connections are strictly for electronic use. I never considered this until mentioned here. And now remember when my kids told me it was time to just go cell and get rid of the landline. But I'm not good at knowing where the cell is most of the time and unless it rings couldn't tell you on a moments notice. Doesn't bear well for emergencies either way since I'm the only one here. Tethered is not going to happen, out of reach does me little good if there were an emergency. How do others handle this one?...See Morebrickeyee
