Cell Phones vs Land Lines
Comments (35)I've opted to keep my landline. I have a houseful of kids and do not want to worry about them using my cell phone to make calls. Plus, I don't want their friends calling on my cell phone when I'm out and about and don't necessarily have the kids with me. Perhaps I'm in the minority here with kids still at home but I can't imagine not having a landline in that case. There are times my kids are at home when I'm not there, so how would they make a phone call? Plus, sometimes my mom babysits and she does not have a cell phone so she would have no way to call me or 911 if there was an emergency. I also live in an area where power frequently goes out, so I have a regular plug in phone (not cordless) to use when power goes out. I might reconsider once all of my kids either have their own cell phones or are no longer living at home. I also reserve giving out my cell phone number to select good friends/family/school - I don't like people having constant access to me when I'm not at home. If I'm not at home, chances are I don't want to be bothered with a phone call so I prefer they leave a message at home and let me call back when convenient. I suppose I'm weird like that but I don't like people calling me while I'm driving, while I'm out grocery shopping, etc....See MoreRemoving phone jack... did I mess up?
Comments (3)Well, it could have caused a problem with future phone reception if the exposed copper in the cut wires came into contact, but it's generally not a problem. The phone techs don't bother to tape: they just wrap cut -- but unused -- wires around the main cable so they are out of the way. If I were you, I'd have just put a blanking plate on the existing, old jack so I could find it more easily in a few years....See MoreHow to verify phone number at jack?
Comments (10)I dial my phone number and a recording says; You have dialed a party on your own line, please hang up and wait for the other party to answer. So I hang up. The phine - It rings so I answer it. The recorded operator type message said to please hold, that I had an incoming call. So I held and held for a long time and suddenly realized, Surprisingly it's was me calling....See MoreUsing a secondary phone line jack on main line
Comments (2)As hendricus says, you should have both at the office jack. Plug a phone in there and see what happens. Sometimes, all 4 connections are in place but only 1 line is active. A telephone with a line 1 and line 2 button would confirm that. You could also disconnect the 4 wires and where the black and yellow wires were, connect the red and green. If you do this and you get dial tone but can't dial out, switch the red and green wire connections. Did the telco do the inside wiring? Somewhere along the line someone spliced twisted pairs into station wire. Coming from the telco service you should have 4 incoming wires...red, green, black, yellow. The red and green are line 1, the black and yellow are line 2. Another approach would be...At the incoming service terminal, make note of what colors from the house wiring are going to the incoming telco service wires. Disconnect the lead where the incoming black lead is and connect it to the terminal where the incoming green is. Then disconnect the lead where the incoming yellow wire is and connect it to where the incoming red wire is. You can leave the incoming black and yellow wire connected to their existing terminals with nothing connected to them....See Moreindygo
