Installing DSL
Comments (1)~ Most iSP's will give you a multi port router/modem/wifi if you tell them when you order the DSL that you have both laptops and desktops. With a one years contract its usually free anyhow. If you only have one desktop with only one wired nic, you're likely to get a single port wired only modem/router. The install package usually has four or five small cord adapters to hook onto each wired telephone to filter the signal. Other than that you hook the modem/router up with telephone cord into a regular phone jack ... cat3 ideally, which will come with the modem. The closer to your mains you can plug it in, the better. Unless you already are wired with a dsl/phone splitter box. Then you wont need the filters but may need to run a cat3 to the junction box....See MoreDSL Install Question
Comments (2)Are you talking about DSL that use the telephone line at your home? In that case all you have to do is to connect a telephone cord, usually supplied by the ISP, one end to the back of the DSL, and the other end to the telephone jack on the wall. The ISP should be the telephone company that provides telephone service for you, so now you pay for a telephone line, plus the DSL service. The ISP also provides you with at least two line filters along the DSL. The filters are connected between each telephone in the house, and the telephone jacks on the walls. If you have more than two telephones, then you will need a filer for each one. All the filters do is to block the noise from the modem connected to the same telephone line. It means that you don't need two separate phone lines, but just one telephone line for both the DSL modem and the telephones. If you don't use the filter on one of the phones, then you will only hear the noise the modem is making. Have you ever dialed a number on the telephone that leads to a fax machine? You do remember the sound you heard? That';'s what you hear when you don't use a filter for the telephone when the modem is active....See MoreTerminate Cat 5e in furnace room?
Comments (9)I had considered just RJ-45 for everything but decided dedicated phone jacks were the way to go otherwise. All will be cat 5e so I can always change. I have engaged in the 'plenum' debate a couple of times with people who insist (and they may be right) that 'plenum' when talking about plenum rated cable means only suspended ceilings that act as a plenum or cold air return. I do have one section where using a section of the cold air return would be the easiest way to run cat 5 and new coax to one room, however, I don't know if coax is available in a plenum rating. In the instance of a fire, cable running through any sort of plenum will be the smallest of issues, plenum cable is supposed to not sustain flame or smoke as much. It's also three times as expensive. The packaging on the plenum cable boxes says (this is BC Canada, maybe its different) it is suitable for use in ducts. I doubt I will, but once the new-cable smell (offgassing) is gone, it would probably not make much of a difference. Like I said, I didn't know what to refer to those dropped sections of ceiling where wiring and plumbing goes, but that's where I'll run my cable....See MoreDSL cable, part 2
Comments (5)OK In answer to the question that was actually asked: keeping the twists together isn't nearly as important for telephone use. Now, about colors... For 4-conductor telephone cable, line 1 is green/red, line 2 is black/yellow. For telecom cable with color-matched pairs, the primary colors (which are all we care about for 5 pairs or less) go blue, orange, green, brown, slate (gray). ie, line 1 is the blue/white pair, line 2 is the orange/white pair, line 3 is green/white, etc. If you ever use more than 5 pairs, those 5 colors repeat, but the stripe color changes. Red for pairs 6-10, Black for 11-15, Yellow for 16-20, and Violet for 21-25. SOOO, now that I've given you way more information than you wanted, here's a simplified answer: Yikes! This is some rough HTML! I definitely deserve a cookie for this one! Line 4 cdr telecom 1 GRN BLU/WHT RED WHT/BLU 2 BLK ORN/WHT YEL WHT/ORN...See MoreVith
