Lots of bare walls in that house!

Wonder why they chose to label it that way?

Do you suppose it is a style of house that can currently be found in Cape Cod? Certainly it's not the "Cape Cod" that we associate with that name. If you didn't want a traditional Cape Cod house, you might just skip over the listing. On the other hand, you might be curious to see a Cape Cod house priced at over $1M.

It's pure coastal contemporary (more west than east I think). But they don't always know what they are talking about. They get the historical periods and styles wrong in the real estate listings here all the time.

I'm no architectural expert, but I don't see much Cape Cod on this home, other than the color. It looks like a typical 1970s era California contemporary or modified ranch. I think you'll see more true interpretation in other neighborhoods in that area, like in East Sac.

There are some interesting skylights, transoms and other details that could really be emphasized with some different decor and finishes, versus being put into conflict. This is one of these cases where the decor is "fighting" with the bones of the home. Hopefully the homeowners will find a new space that suits their true desires and personal taste. Oh, and can we say "barrier island" alert!

I agree about the bare walls... like the real estate agent or stager went through to depersonalize everything. But they oddly forgot the "Parking for Lebanese Only" sign.... (and a stray duck).

I live on Cape Cod. That's not a style that would be traditional here.

There are some beachfront contemporaries I've seen in Truro and Wellfleet that look like they would be more at home on the West Coast, but they're not the norm.

I grew up in the Bay Area and now live in Cape Cod Central (aka eastern MA). That is a California ranch with, in my opinion, some unfortunate renovations! My childhood home sold a couple of years ago. It was a classic CA ranch built in 1960 and it was almost unrecognizable to me in the real estate listing. It was a shame b/c it had great MCM bones....

Well, it's gray and it has a roof -- I guess that makes it Cape Cod!

It is oddly furnished for the style of the house - too formal for what looks like some sort of West Coast house. And that big-arse TV stuck in the kitchen looks terrible.

I'm in Cape Cod right now and I have not seen anything like that. I suppose because it is gray?

The recent residents of the house are renters who have been there for two years. It may be their furnishings and that might be why there isn't much on the walls. With the high ceilings in many rooms, that house has a lot of large wall expanses.

Dedtired, the house is more blue than gray. Yes, the designation seemed off to me - I'm glad so many of you confirm it. I wonder if that's the real estate agent's idea of Cape Cod or the owner's.

Gooster, not just a barrier island but so little working room around the cooktop on it. I guess the peninsula is the landing spot for the ovens but it doesn't seem very convenient. And anyone using the cooktop will be in the way of anyone wanting water from the sink.

I've been trying to figure out why the cabinet area in the living room bugs me. It doesn't seem to fit. Perhaps because it looks more like a big bathroom vanity than a wet bar (which is, I assume, the intended use). What could be done to make that go better? Perhaps start with taking off the mirrors.

It looks like there is no way to close off any of the public rooms from the others - entry, kitchen, breakfast nook and family room are all very open to each other and to the upper hall. It doesn't look like there are doors to close off the living room and dining room either but perhaps that could be added.

Maybe it's just the angle of the photo but I find the view of entering the house and be confronting with the back of the staircase very off-putting and unwelcoming.

hhireno, I thought that was sort of awkward too. I think the fish eye lens makes it look worse than it may in real life by expanding the size of the stair wall.

I can see why they did it that way. They needed the upper hall to be centered under the peak of the roof to have enough height above it. If they turned the stair to run the opposite direction so the bottom faced the door, it would have taken away the dining nook space. I'm not sure what is to the right of the door - it may be one of the bedrooms - another option might have been to have the bottom of the stair face the right of the entry area and then turn 90 degrees to the top, but that would have taken some space from that room.

Could decorating warm the entry up? Perhaps some sort of shallow entry table or chest on the stair wall with some art above it. Something that would welcome one on entry. It looks like there is about 6' or more between the door and the stair wall so there should be room.

I think they repainted the whole thing for sale, and probably did not want to put holes in the walls.

The entry is odd, I agree. I wonder if you could just put a wall up in front of the staircase, and close it off. That would also address some of the sightline issues.

The kitchen.nook is also an oddity, plus there are three bars in close proximity (one wet bar in the LR, one in the FR, and the peninsula in the kitchen).

I'm beginning to think that "Cape Cod style" is real estate-speak for "we don't know what to call it." I'm seeing more and more non-Cape Cod style houses labeled as Capes. It's beginning to bug me a little bit.

There is nothing, inside or out, about that house that has the remotest connection to a Cape Cod house.

The ceiling in the great room is somewhat jarring. I was taken aback at seeing that after looking at the more formal appearances of the living room and dining room.

And I agree about walking into the front entrance of the house and being confronted with a wall of a staircase.

There is quite a bit of counterspace in the kitchen so why is the cooktop on the too-small barrier island.
