drywall box as a junction box

ok heres the setup: in my garage I needed to move a plug over about 2 or 3 feet. I ended up destroying the existing box (nailed on) while removing it to drill through the stud to run the wire over (plywood walls and doubled up studs). So I hit on what I thought was a simple solution go back a little further and put in a old work box and use the hole from the old box to drill the stud. Worked great . Anyhow I cannot seem to find a blank cover that will fit a drywall box because of the 'ears' that hold it flush to the surface. Did I do something wrong (or just dumb) by using a drywall box as a junction box? or do I just need to look for a bigger cover?
