Changing ceiling fans- can someone please shed some light on this

Hello everyone.

We recently bought a house. The house was build in 1953.

We went to repaint one of the kids bedrooms and took off the old ceiling fan that what in there so that we can paint the ceiling. We bought a new ceiling fan/light combo to replace the old one. We don't know if the old ceiling fan was original to the house or was installed by previous owners.

Anyway, we were looking at the wiring instruction for the new ceiling fan and there are four wires: black, blue, green, and white. The instructions say to connect black and blue wire to the black wire (together?) and then green to green and white to white. The problem is that there are only black, brown, and white wires coming out of the ceiling right now.

Would anyone know what we are supposed to do with this? Any help would be appreciated.
