converting ceiling light to fan/light?
Comments (3)It's not necessarily a big deal. There's a good chance you can use the existing wiring, but probably not the existing box in the ceiling. Go to your local big-box store and ask about ceiling fan-rated electrical boxes. There are several styles available, depending on whether you need to mount the fan in open space between two joists, or up against the side of a joist, or directly under a joist. After disconnecting the wiring from the old fixture, you'll have to disentangle it from the old box and pull it into the new box as you install it. Hopefully the house is new enough that the wiring is romex; if it's full of original 1950's wiring with insulation that has become brittle, it could become a bigger project....See MoreCeiling Light or Ceiling Fan with Light
Comments (1)I recommend fan / light combo's. I am addicted to fans, while my husband is a big "overhead light in the middle of the room" guy. If you have 8' ceilings, take care where they are placed with relationship to the bed. If you have kids who jump, or while making the bed, light / fan could be damaged because the combo does take up a fair amount of space coming down from ceiling. Please do not consider what you see "in the stores" to be anywhere near what the market bears. And fan quality of those could give you big headaches down the road. We are in NoVA, and completed our construction late 2011. We dealt with Dominion Electric (I just looked, they have store near you (Laurel & Baltimore). I highly recommend. Our rep here was honest, and made recommendations based on our needs, and budget, also steered us away from companies who might be having issues just now, or parts / warranty issues in future. We found that one of the big box stores carried same line of lighting. We ordered sample from one of the BB stores, so we could just see it, and return it. Later, when we ordered the actual piece to be installed in our home, we found that D.E. prices were actually lower than the big box. So don't think they are higher. Plus, if you are building, there might be 'builder's discount', but you should ask on that. dominionelectric-dot-com. I do not work for them. But we found that of all the vendors during home construction, these were in top 3 of being wonderful to deal with, issue free, and honest. Good luck!!...See Morevaulted LR ceiling+combo fan/light--the 'strobe light effect
Comments (9)Melle, I thought I was the only one with this issue:-) First of all, I have fans in every room of the house except the kitchen, and I have to be careful about any light that is above them because it casts shadows and makes me nauseous after a while. Also, and this is why this isn't a small issue, strobe light effects have been proven to cause epileptic seizures and migraines in those prone to them (not all of the time, but they set off some electrical impulse...). I get migraines, so this is a huge deal to me. I think the cans can work, the recessed eyeballs are a great idea, too and in fact if I had my druthers, that is what I would use (because you can angle them and they seem more like gallery lights to me). But I do want to make sure you test some light up there with the fan on. It may not be an issue because your cans will be up much higher than the fan, but in some rooms when I've had this combo, the fan blades whirling past the cans cast shadows. Maybe your eyeball lights wouldn't be anywhere near the blades, in which case, this could work out well. In my experience, looking at can lights and where they will go, it's often hard to see them not looking weird. But when they're up and functioning, they tend to blend in. Good luck, I feel your pain (I have -- no, DH has -- CFLs in every room- esp painful in the bathrooms and the exterior front lights, which are gorgeous carriage lamps that are supposed to burn with the flickering gas look....you can SEE the CFLs in there...UGH. He has even stuck them in crystal antique lamps! He's so sweet; I love that he cares about the environment, but...geez)....See MoreCeiling fan lights won't turn on
