What is extra cost to run new circuit rather than daisy chain?

I'm trying to get an idea of the extra cost to run a new circuit to a receptacle rather than daisy chain it from a nearby one.

It seems that the extra costs involved would be:

- higher permit fee (?)

- bigger breaker box

- the breaker itself

- the cost of the Romex wire

- the cost of attaching the wire to the breaker

- the cost of running the wire to the location (which for the situations I'm considering is trivial as it only involves running the wire around the perimeter of the attic

There could even be some cost savings:

- the cost of drilling holes and running and attaching to the one receptacle to the other

I am not exactly sure what you are asking or implying.

The cost should be obvious. The wire and time to run it. The only reason it would cost more is if the run is very long as opposed to finding a power source close by.

IMO it depends more on the intended usage than cost savings. If the new receptacle is going to be used for a TV or table lamp it would be silly to run a home run to it.
If it is a bathroom receptacle or other high use location then a HR would be a very good idea. In fact, a bathroom receptacle would be required to be dedicated in most cases.

I would say you are making this a lot more detailed and complicated than necessary. Unless the box is full, no new box is necessary and if the box is full a good electrician could likely identify a circuit that you could add another receptacle to, so no new breaker. Other wise the cost of physically running the wire and attaching the wire and so forth is not going to be much different no matter where you run the power from.

There is another factor that no one has touched upon. I am a Plumber and I have spent many years earning a reputation amongst the local builders and plumbing inspectors as being a stickler for detail, to the point that often an inspector comes on the job site and when he or she sees me standing there they barely go through the motions of an inspection, relying upon the fact that they know my work. In return, I can command top money amongst the builders and I am still in high demand because they know that I will get the job done on time, in budget and have no follow-up problems. Along comes Mr & Mrs gotlotz acting in the stead of a competent GC and they immediately begin giving me attitude. NO problem. The first thing out of their mouth is that they will not settle for the quality of work we do on tract homes. Fine with me, never let it be said that I cheated you out of your bragging rights, I just add an additional 10 or 15% aggravation fee for putting up with the attitude. The quality of the work speaks for itself.

I'd go for House #1. Thinking, get out that bad rental, and who knows really when #2 will be ready. Developers make all kinds of promises that don't come through, and you sure are right about the pricing. (will leave out long, nearly identical story that happened to friends, pricing left them in a pickle) Also, I know you're thinking playroom now, but not knowing how old your kids are and how long you plan to stay in this house, I agree with pixie_lou and lyfia's assessments. In the long run, I'd take storage/work area over an extra room to clean up any day. Nobody spends time in the side yards - choose the best backyard and then front yard/neighbors. And that's house #1. You will be happy when you see your electric bill that you are not facing west! Another pro for house #1. Just my thoughts. Hope this helps!

" so you're saying that pulling romex through any sort of raceway is illegal? Sorry but you are wrong, there is nothing wrong with what the OP stated here. what you first posted and planned is perfectly fine. Just check with your local AHJ to make sure they aren't going to make you do anything special. If you pull an MWBC (edison) circuit, you will be required to put both circuits on a common throw breaker such as a double pole for example. So that both circuits are either open or closed at the same time.

Thanks for the advice. I'm still not sure what caused the humidity level to drop that low. The thermostat controller was set for 40%, but maybe the window saving feature dialed that down without telling me because the outdoor temperature recently had a severe drop? I've raised the windows protection setting to the max since, and it's back up to 34% now. We had our HVAC company's Energy Auditor / Sales person out last week with a proposal for the new house, and he said that there's something wrong with the pump and they'll replace it for us (provided we buy our new HVAC system from them, of course). It's just disappointing that the service tech comes and says, "Yeah, that's normal, it's supposed to make that sound all the time. That'll be $90", and it takes getting a sales guy out and the prospect of new business for them to say, "Yeah, it shouldn't do that. It needs to be replaced." I mean, what's the point in spending $10K on a high-end, ultra-quiet HVAC system when it's undone by the noise from a $70 pump?

Well, the reason I have this question is because there are a few receptacle here and there that I would like to have as separate circuits, so that I don't have to trip the breaker if I happen to have 2 power hungry appliances running. If the cost were trivial, then it would be no problem. As I have said, I think that running the wire from the breaker to the location would be as easy as simply walking along the perimeter of the attic, and thus the only extra cost would be the cost of the wire (which is quite low now - YAY!)

For example, in the kitchen, I could get by with a single circuit to run the microwave, toaster oven, lights, other receptacles. But it would be better for me to have a separate circuit for the microwave and toaster oven. So the question is how much more would it cost for me to have all those receptacles and fixtures be run off of 1 breaker, or 3.

The electrical code is going to answer a lot of your questions.

Two dedicated 20amp countertop appliance circuits.

Counter top microwave can be on this but no over the range microwave and no lighting.

We are talking about three or four circuits already.
