Telephone jack removal

We have DSL internet service through Frontier. We are remodeling our kitchen and removed a phone jack just by cutting the wires. I was just going to stuff it in the wall and tile over it but now our internet does not work. We have the modem connected to another jack in the house with a wireless router. We can connect to wireless router just fine but are not connecting to the internet. Does cutting those wires in a different room some how break the connection to the whole thing?

It depends on how the jacks are wired. If they are "daisy chained" ... with one wire running from the phone company's input to a series of phone jacks throughout the house, as happens when people decide to add a few jacks and just hook onto the old one, or the original installer decided that chaining was a good way to do it, any jacks that are after the cut will go dead.

Remove the jack you don't want and twist the cut wires together, matching colors. If your internet connection works, that was the problem.

It's a bad idea to have a patched wire in the wall because the patches have a way of going bad. Run new exterior grade phone wire from the phone company's terminator box (where the wires reach the house) to a convenient spot for the DSL box.

Disconnect any wires to jacks you aren't using at the terminator box - they can affect your DSL quality because of ... let's just call it complicated.

I already have my wish list ready: Bathroom Overhaul (all new tub and toilet, tile, add granite counter and new sink to existing cabinet). The vent fan needs replacing as well, I would like an automatic unit that senses humidity and turns itself on and off. New stove and dishwasher. New washer and dryer. Drywall the laundry area and add cupboards and a countertop. Widen the driveway just a bit so the angle isn't quite as sharp and I no longer have to drive over the grass. Deck and screen house around the pool, or take down the pool and install a cement pad and greenhouse in that area. Oh, and I need a new mattress for my bedroom and a queen size bed for my daughter. That should about cover it ;) Dances.

Ron, probably can't do that, since there's another jack daisy-chained to this one. If the OP can abandon that other jack, whereever it is, that would be ideal - then you could just disconnect the wires at the demarc - but if it's still in use then you just need to have a good connection between those wires. Probably the easiest way to get a good connection is going to be to just hook a jack back up and put it inside the wall or cabinet.. Also, are you sure that it was just a wall plate? Did you by any chance also remove a DSL filter from the system somewhere?

Yes, everything should work "as before" if you are just substituting a flush mount jack for a surface mount model. Most of these jacks have 4 screws, one for each color of wire. Connecting like-colors, wrap the bare portion of the wires around the screws in the same direction as the screw tightens. The clips that you mention are usually the ends of the wires that go to the "outlet", and the "u" clip is just a nicer way of keeping the wire in place underneath the screw. In this case, each screw terminal will have three wires (of a single color), two bare, and one with a "u" clip.
